Skiing

Not sure if there are any forum skiers out there but if there are and you are looking forward to a Christmas skiing holiday, you are in luck. The conditions are wonderful in Switzerland at the moment. Loads of fresh snow and more forecast.

I went skiing in Austria with my parents this winter
the conditions of the snow were perfect and the weather was great!
I also got a special military watch as a christmas present this year. I wear it for every outdoor sport and it works perfectly!
I think it is so importnat to have a high quality equipment for every sport!

Austria is another beautiful country and I'm glad that you enjoyed your skiing there.   I've been to the Tyrol twice and loved it there.
You are correct about having the best gear because safety is paramount especially in the mountains.

I forget to say that one day there was a snowstorm when we were at the peak of the mountain and, Yes, I realised again that the equipment is the most important thing. So never save money in that. It could cost your life!

Mr Hollins prefers to go ski touring these days rather than downhill skiing. This means walking up the mountains on skis with skins on. The skins which are a bit like velcro strips are fixed to the bottom of the skis so that they don't slip back when you are going uphill. In the old days they used to be seal skins.
Then at the top they are removed for the descent. It is possible to traverse the mountains, travelling from hut to hut. The huts are manned and serve food and drink and often have dormitory type accommodation.
It is a good way of escaping the crowds but very strenuous on the ascent.
Here are a couple of photos which show the peacefulness and the clouds lying in the valley below.

Glad to hear that they don't now use seal skins :o

Actually, he was sitting on a bench outside a small chalet eating his sandwich and marvelling at this lovely hand made gutter!

Here's an amusing one for all you dog lovers on the forum.
Mr Hollins is not long back from a ski touring trip in Austria. One day they saw this dog walk up the mountain with a German couple and then they put it in a rucksack when they skied down!
Here is a link to the Amazon page where you can buy the sunglasses which are called "doggles." the description is funny.
