Llandudno Arts Festival to be launched
« on: June 10, 2013, 02:04:15 pm »
LLawn01 is an innovative and exciting arts festival initiated by Mostyn
Estates, with a group of diverse organisations working in partnership to
bring both traditional and contemporary art to Llandudno for a three day
festival from 20-22 September 2013.

This concept has brought together a number of key arts organisations
including Helfa Gelf Open Studios network, Conwy Arts Service (CCBC),
Conwy Events team (CCBC), Venue Cymru, CASC Studios, the Royal
Cambrian Academy and Migrations Dance. Marc Rees has been invited
to formulate ideas for the festival – he is the artist responsible for Adain
Avion, the project which was successfully received at Llandudno last year
as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

There will be many activities within Llandudno, with pop-up arts studios,
art displays in empty shops, as well as performing arts on the streets,
engaging and interacting with the public. A number of prime site spaces in
the town have been designated, and Marc Rees will work with local
community groups to design and prepare a number of arts interventions
that will take place over the weekend.

Events to be programmed include –
Pop-up studios for visual artists (Helfa Gelf) in empty shops
 Exhibitions held by gallery partners
Small scale performances (dance / drama) in public spaces, such
as North Western Gardens
 Family friendly art workshops
 Talks by artists
 Music performances
 Art projections

I think that sounds really positive.  I think it will good for Llandudno to have a few more events like this and well done to Mostyn Estates, which seems to be involved heavily in most of these new things (such as the Air Show).  It's a shame that Conwy CBC doesn't get more involved as it shouldn't really be for the local landlord (a private company) to do things like this, which in most places would be planned by the local authority's events team and is a natural job for them.

I know some people will grumble about the words 'contemporary' and 'art' and I know it probably won't be to everyone's tastes, but I think Llandudno's future lies in bringing a diverse range of people to the town throughout the year.  Similar to the Extravaganza, which I know many (though not me) hate.  If it brings people in, and they think: "Oh what a nice place, I might come back here for a weekend later in the year",  then events like that are worth their weight in gold for a holiday town.
