"I've copied something I've read about the original owners of Haulfre ... He (Lord Aberconwy) much preferred ... "
Actually, the owner of Haulfre was Henry Davis Pochin, father-in-law of the first Lord Aberconway - who married Pochin's daughter Laura in 1877 and she inherited Bodnant Estate on her father's death in 1895. I don't know when they relinquished the rights to Haulfre.
Pochin bought Bodnant in 1872, a year after buying Haulfre, and started the development to what we see today - laburnum arch and the dell were his main early projects. Later the layout and planting was by Laura and Charles McLaren (first Lord & Lady) who put son Henry (2nd Lord) in charge and he developed Bodnant Garden from the early 1900's to 1953, many expeditions worldwide benefiting from his support. The tradition continued with the McLaren family with many projects developed over the years ... and more yet to come!
