A well-known entrepreneur who lived in Llandudno has passed away aged 80.

John Storer , who died from heart failure, was born in Leicstershire and grew up in Derby, his heart always lay in Llandudno.

During the 1970s the father-of-three owned pleasure boats in the seaside town before more recently running speed boats from the North Shore.

He also brought the popular land trains in Llandudno and owned the Winchmore Hotel.

In 2013 John famously offered to fund £179,000 of repairs to a dangerous council-owned jetty used by his pleasure boats.

The boat operators were worried that if they lose use of the Victorian long jetty next to the pier they would lose up to 40% of their takings.

In the end the council did not accept his offer.

Mr Storer was a vocal supporter of the Restore Our Beach campaign , after Conwy County Council dumped stones on the beach causing a public outcry.

His greatest friend, former Weekly News journalist Hefin Hughes said: “John loved Llandudno, he thought it was the most beautiful place in the UK.

“But he was worried blundering council officials would ruin it, and he always fought to protect it.

“He was also brave financially and physically.

“We once went on a tiny boat to the Isle of Man, and the weather got really pretty hairy but he stayed calm throughout, and was a skilled boatman.”

Mr Storer’s son David said: “Dad was a wheeler and dealer and even until a couple of weeks ago he had his fingers in quite a few pies.

“He started off in Llandudno running a garage behing the Washington pub,

“He was a character, a joker who never let anything really get to him.

“As a family we’ll carry on with the businesses, Dad would have wanted us to.”

Mr Storer died on January 27 and his funeral will take place on February 17.
