CAMBRIAN RALLY 2017
« on: February 07, 2017, 09:14:18 am »
Next Saturday (11th February) sees the 62nd running of the North Wales Car Club's Cambrian Rally.  We have attracted 125 entries, with a number of crews from Scotland and Northern Ireland along with one from the Isle of Man and all corners of England and Wales.  It's a very competitive entry with five previous winners out for battle.

Rally HQ at St George Hotel where programmes will be available.  Scrutineering in the Victoria Centre were you can view the cars going through their pre-event checks.

Start is from Llandudno Prom at 7.30am with six forest stages to be tackled before returning to town late afternoon.  No Orme stage this year.

Full details on www.cambrianrally.co.uk where there will also be a link to live results.

If you're going out stay safe.

Dave I am really sorry things did not work out as planned, especially after all the hard work and the extra hurdles NWCC had to contend with this year, my best wishes to everyone involved. $good$

Statement from Cambrian Rally organisers

Cambrian Rally course clerk Alyn Edwards said:
“There were four inches of snow lying on top of sheet ice at the next stage at Aberhirnant near Bala which made it impossible for marshals to reach their safety posts. There was a very real risk of injury to marshals, competitors and spectators so sadly the decision was taken that the event shouldn’t continue.”

Competitor Keith Parry from Anglesey commented:
“We are fully supportive of North Wales Car Club in their decision to cancel today’s event. The conditions at Alwen were awful and a top decision was made based on the safety of crews, marshals and spectators.”

Thanks Steve .

Yes, the team is gutted that the event did not complete the course but we had no alternative.  There as snow on the first stage (Alwen) and there is much youtube video of the top drivers having difficulty.  Not all the competitors managed to tackle that stage as it was deemed unsafe.

The other stages south of Bala had a couple of inches of snow on top of ice, and would have become even more polished after a few cars had been run through.  As it was, the marshals were having difficulty getting into position (and there were over 400 marshals out on the three stages), whilst the rescue services were also having extreme difficulty so would not have been able to reach an incident safely.

In view of all this the MSA Safety Delegate advised we pull the plug, so it was a team decision that has been well-supported by all the competitors, timekeepers, marshals and safety crews out on the event.   We have a duty of care to all involved, and bear in mind that marshals would have been on station for many horus.  Unfortunate for the spectators, most of whom are understanding and should be happy to know that the money paid for parking will be going to local organisations.

I'm writing this just before 8pm when I should have been at HQ getting ready for the awards presentation.

Some may remember 1979 when the Cambrian Rally was cancelled due to the Orme being blocked by snow.  I was clerk-of-the-course on that one and it's not an easy task to tell everyone it's off.

After all we'd gone through to get the event running this was a sad blow to us all - but we will recover!

The 2018 Cambrian Rally is happening today - here's the best places and times to watch the action.

It will start and finish on Llandudno promenade with cars racing through the Conwy Valley, Penmachno, Llyn Elsi and Alwen – which was used on Wales Rally GB.

This year the rally will be using Surf Snowdonia in Dolgarrog as the main service area where spectators will be able to get up close and personal with the cars and competitors.

If anyone is interested in results all the info is here, and it is live!

http://www.btrdarallyresults.co.uk/results/index.php?EventID=509&e=509&ls=2

Event is running late due to an incident on the first stage, then local star Matt Edwards had an incident on the second stage!

Currently leading is Derbyshire driver Ollive Mellors in a Proton Iriz (bet not many of you have seen one of those).

Closed local battle between Ruthin's Hugh Hinter and Rhuddlan's Luke Francis, both previous winners and only one second between them after 4 stages.

Thanks for the update, DVT.

As it is running late, I am afraid we shall have to leave shortly and catch the number 26 home.

I will check the finishing times later.

I hope the local lads can do well.

The winners of the Cambrian Rally have been announced following a thrilling race against the clock which saw one driver taken to hospital after a huge crash.

Ollie Mellor and his co-driver Max Freeman were the surprise winners of the 63rd Cambrian Rally which roared off from Llandudno this morning.
But the victory was not an easy one with their Proton Iriz R5 suffered a puncture in the penultimate stage of the competition which saw drivers tackle seven difficult stages including stunning forest sections.

However, Mellor of Matlock car club and Freeman of Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire car club managed to hold their nerve to finish the course six seconds ahead of their rivals Paul Bird and Jack Morton.
