This weekend has seen the holding of Schwingen (Swiss Wrestling Festival).
It is held once every three years and this year it was held in a stadium in Burgdorf which was especially built for the event and will be dismantled at the end of it.
More than 250,000 visitors were expected. It had seating for 52.000 spectators and the event had a budget of 25 million Swiss francs.
This article explains about the history etc of the sport.

A common mistake!

Wrestling is FIXED but it isn't FAKE.

The matches are pre determined bedorehand but they still beat the hell out of one another in the ring as the massive injury list in any wrestling organization will be prove.

if they get hurt it is by accident they practice all the moves before hand and now and again things do go wrong, it is still good entertainment for those who love the sport but its not as dangerous as they would have you believe. Would I do it? you must be joking

Wrestling is extremely dangerous as is evidenced by 2 facts.

1, At any one time, 50% of the worlds premier wrestlers are 'on the shelf', i.e. The Injured List.

2, The vast majority of wrestlers are dead in their mid-thirties.   This is from a combination of steroid abuse, substance abuse but also an irreversible addiction to pain killers to get them through the next show.

I trained for 6 weeks to be a Wrestler back in the late 1980's, it was the most pain-filled and physically punishing period of my life.

Of course there was a wrestler named Fester, but methinks he was over the pond.  Not over the hill!  L0L

A wrestling show starting at midnight that is poorly attended. Who'd have guessed?
