If I remember right, it's a weather phenomena called 'superior mirage' which makes things look closer than they really are. Warm air above a cold layer creates a lens effect.

This is what we saw, but it was a lot clearer to the naked eye, if only DaveR had been there with his camera!

On the subject of the abnormal visibility yesterday, I walked over the Little Orme and was struck by the particularly clear view. You could see all the new bases for the turbines that have been laid for the new Gwynt-y-Mor windfarm (see pics. but apologies for the quality, it's only a cheapie camera!) and with binocs you could pick out buildings in Liverpool such as the Cathedral etc. It made me realise what a lovely area we are lucky enough to live in, and also how beautiful the bay looks when the tide is in and you can't see the "green belt" on the foreshore!

Fester, the next time the Conspiracy Club meets up on the Orme we will invite you.
There is life above sea level you know.
I have heard of cabin fever but not kiosk fever, you must get out more.

In support of Fester, it is noticeable that yesterday the Isle of Man was visible from the car park of the 'Rest and Be Thankful' Café but not from the top of the Little Orme.  *&(

Not sure if it was a very low tide or something but i could see the Lake district mountains from the top of Bodnant rd, very unusual.

About 5 years ago we saw Blackpool Tower using binoculars from the trig point by the cable car winder on the Great Orme.
It was October on a nice cool evening.
I think you can also see the tall buildings at the Barrow in Furness ship yards occasionally.

Here is a rough guide to calculation of how far the horizon is on a clear day.

This calculation should be taken as a guide only as it assumes the earth is a perfect ball 6378137 metres radius. It also assumes the horizon you are looking at is at sea level. A triangle is formed with the centre of the earth (C) as one point, the horizon point (H) is a right angle and the observer (O) the third corner. Using Pythagoras's theorem we can calculate the distance from the observer to the horizon (OH) knowing CH is the earth's radius (r) and CO is the earth's radius (r) plus observer's height (v) above sea level.

Sitting in a hotel room 10m above sea level a boat on the horizon will be 11.3km away. The reverse is also true, whilst rowing across the Atlantic, the very top of a mountain range 400m high could be seen on your horizon at a distance of 71.4 km assuming the air was clear enough.
