Many Thanks to Dave and Ian for setting this up again.I am hoping to get more local officers involved so that there are representatives on here for each area within the "Three Towns". Please feel free to post any questions or issues you would like answering in the Discussion thread and i will pose the question to whichever Officer covers the area in which you live.

We will endeavour to answer all questions and issues honestly and openly and as quickly as possible usually at the end of our shifts or in our off duty time.

For any matters which you feel are sensitive please send me a personal message.

Worthy of immediate note is the recent rise of break ins to Vehicles in the Deganwy and Llandudno Junction area.Residents are urged to make sure that all windows and doors are shut and locked, nothing of any value should be left on display, alarm or/and immobiliser activated. All common sense stuff really but worth double checking when parking your vehicle for the night. One of the common methods used by Car Criminals is checking the windscreen for the circular suction marks left by Sat Navs and then breaking into the car to find the Sat Nav on alot of occasions hidden under the seat or in the glovebox. It is definitely worth dismantling the sat nav, taking it out of the car and give the windscreen a wipe so there are no visible marks.

Its Good to be back

Police are urging people to look at their home security following a spate of burglaries in the Rhos-on-Sea area.

The past three months has seen an increase in reported house burglaries in and around Rhos-on-Sea.

In a bid to prevent opportunist thieves, police want to encourage the public to ensure they review their security and keep doors and windows locked.

Inspector Ian Verburg said: "Some arrests have been made and investigations are on going. We are working hard to disrupt offenders, to bring them to justice and thus reduce offences.”

He added: “As well as having specialist investigators working on the offences reported, additional patrols are being carried out in the area."

Police would also urge anyone witnessing any suspicious activity in the Rhos-on-Sea area to contact them on 101, or 0845 6071001 (Welsh line), 0845 6071002 (English line) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Perhaps some one in the police force could answer this.

How is it that anyone apparently can rock up here and sell jewellery outside RBS or play saxophone, keyboards, guitar, sing out of tune etc. in Mostyn Street.  Blast out amplified racket by the library and no one comes along and chases them?

Quite simply because the Council (either of them) do not implement the By-laws.   Street trading is permitted on licence and if you look at my comment on another thread you will see that the Council hardly bother to issue licences.

It is just the same as Camper vans parking overnight on the Prom.  The law says, "NO!" but the Council say, "YES!"..  All they can think of is chasing the motorist as that is the easiest revenue to collect.   Load of w***ers the lot of them!

North Wales Police to spy on drivers using HGV cabs

Police will fit lorry cabs with cameras to spy on people using mobile phones while they’re driving to reduce the number of fatalities on our roads.
Today North Wales Police, the three other Welsh police forces and Road Safety Wales launched a major crackdown on rogue drivers who endanger lives.
The two-week all-Wales campaign from October 6-19 urges drivers to “keep their eyes on the road” and not be distracted by answering phones, reading texts or going online.

If the Police and the Government think that driving whilst using a mobile phone is dangerous, which it obviously is then they should amend the law accordingly and increase the penalty for doing so.
At present the penalty of only three points on your licence is absurd and should be increased to deter these irresponsible motorists from committing this offence.

Increased penalties ?..The mobile phone chat, made me think how many still not wearing seat belts...
Why do so many drivers shun seatbelts?
It is more than 30 years since it became illegal to drive without a seatbelt, yet up to two million drivers in the UK are still risking it, with 47% not knowing it could incur a fine, according to a new survey.

So how is it that a poll by LV car insurance has found that 6% of drivers in the UK are still taking to the roads without a seatbelt?

As well as the safety risks of not belting up, there is considerable risk to the wallet - not wearing a seatbelt carries a fine of up to £500. According to the survey, £8.2m in fines have been issued so far this year to 80,000 drivers.

The reasons given in surveys....not cool...wrinkles clothes...civil rights....uncomfortable.....got airbags. ! !
The problem seems to be getting bigger?... although it does not affect "us", as does someone on a mobile, it is an indication of the mindset of todays drivers, not cool!
If they are not worried about there own safety ......
I think in New Zealand they take the car off people for a short time, for some minor offences ?

I suppose it's Darwinism in action really.

I survived a very serious car crash in the early 1990s, purely because I was wearing a seat belt. I was able to walk away, whilst a back seat passenger in the same car who wasn't wearing a  seat belt was thrown through the rear windscreen and landed up 20 feet away on the road with serious injuries.

Same here, in the 70s on black ice, very slow no other vehicle....no seat belt...nearly lost my right leg, in hospital for months, a hard lesson, but seat belts now second nature, as is checking lights and tyres etc..... here's hoping they see sense soon. :(

Just remembered, nothing to do with seatbelts but in my hospital ward, I think there were about 30 of us, of the 30 only 5 walked out on there own two feet.....we had been in cars, the others on motorbikes.?

DRIVING RISK: Voice-activated smartphones and dashboard infotainment systems may be making drivers even more distracted, new studies have found.

The systems let drivers tune the radio, send a text message, or make a phone call while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel - but many are so error-prone or complex that they require more concentration rather than less, say the AAA

New police radar gun could catch texting drivers
Texting while driving is ridiculously dangerous, but police could be clamping down soon thanks to a new radar gun which detects texters at a distance.
The gun is so accurate that it can even figure out the difference between a user sending a text, making a call or surfing online, as the radio frequencies emiited are ever so slightly different.

You're both correct of course and it seems that the idea brings as many problems to the matter as it does solutions.    I would have thought that CCTV would show you who the culprit is and if the photo of the driver is unrecognisable then the owner of the vehicle could be requested to supply that info or otherwise be held responsible in default

Concern over young rooftop climbers in Llandudno

Police have appealed to youngsters not to climb onto the roofs of buildings and have increased patrols in certain areas in a bid to clamp down on the “clearly dangerous” activitiy.
The appeal follows a number of incidents in the town, in which several young people have found their way on top of hotels and a derelict community centre on Trinity Avenue.

TODAY marks the end of British Summer Time and North Wales Police would like to remind road users to take extra care and remain vigilant when out at night.

With the clocks going back by one hour, the changes mean the days become shorter and it become darker much earlier and children, pedestrians and cyclists become even more vulnerable as they are less visible to motorists.

Inspector Martin Best from North Wales Police’ Roads Policing Unit said: “Now that the clocks will be going back and it’s getting darker earlier on, it’s more important than ever to make sure you can be seen when you’re out and about near roads.

A 13-year-old boy who went missing from Holyhead has been found safe and well.

Liam Anderson had not been seen since around 11am on Wednesday and police appealed for help to find him.

North Wales Police yesterday said attempts attempts to find the Anglesey teen Liam had proved “fruitless”.
But by yesterday evening he was back home safe and well.
Officers said they would like to thank the public for their help.

Operation mistletoe.

Police and door staff will from tomorrow be able to breath test customers if they believe they have already had enough to drink, it is operating at Club 147 and Fountains by the looks of things to begin with.
The gauge appears to be if someone is three times over the drink drive limit then that will be a good benchmark to presumably refuse them entry.

In which case both venues takings will be DECIMATED over Xmas.

So, roughly 4 or 5 drinks is enough to BAN you from these late night premises.
I have no chance then, because I'll be going out around 6pm, and that means by 8pm I'll be unable to get served anywhere, and be trooping off home for an early night!

At least it was in the gutter. I have heard of several hoteliers complain about their guests urinating in the hotel corridors. I have no pity for them at all,in fact I would add a sizeable amount to their final bills before evicting them immediately no matter what time of day or night.
As for breath testing customers before going in to bars and clubs, that's a difficult one to pass comment on. It's a sad state affairs that we need doormen in these places in the first instance. Some of us can enjoy a drink without causing trouble , others can't.

It was originally destined as a Police topic, moderated by a local officer and, er...policed by the Police, in effect.  However, he was moved to another location, so this topic returned to being a more general topic regarding police. But you do have a point: a lot of what's been said in here could have been in any of several other topics. I suppose the reason we've never renamed it is simply that at some point we're hopeful that another local bobby with good internet skills will come along and offer to moderate their own topic.

Drug-drive testing added to drink-drive campaign

Motorists will be tested for cannabis and cocaine for the first time during an anti-drink and drugs campaign by the four Welsh police forces.
Officers will be able to take swabs from drivers' mouths to test for any of eight prescription or eight illegal drugs after a change in regulations.
The new rules run alongside the existing law where it is an offence to drive when impaired by any drug.
Drivers face prosecution if they exceed limits set for the tests.
The existing penalties mean drug drivers already face a fine up to £5,000, up to six months in prison and a minimum one-year driving ban.
Those using prescription drugs within recommended amounts will not be penalised.
The All Wales Summer Anti-Drink and Drug Drive Campaign begins on Monday and runs for a month.

SCAM WARNING: Trading Standards teams have been made aware of a website which appears to offer gift vouchers for supermarkets such as Asda.

They invite the person to register their mobile number and they state they will send you voucher numbers which you can use online or in store at the supermarket.

However, what they do not tell you is that they charge for sending the texts to your phone, each text appears to cost £4.50 each.

Additionally on checking with Asda, they have confirmed that this website is a scam, and they do not have any knowledge of the voucher numbers provided.

Therefore should you come across any websites which offer voucher codes, make checks into the site first, as they may not be genuine. Additionally always check small print for charges, many voucher code websites offer these for free, after you have registered. If in doubt telephone Consumer Advice on 03454 040506, for further advice.

Danger of bogus callers who are targeting vulnerable residents in the region.

The fraudsters, who it is believed have recently been targeting Aberconwy residents, often telephone claiming to work for the police or a bank or other official body to try and convince victims that their bank account has been compromised and persuade them that they need to move or withdraw money immediately.

“If your bank, the police, HMRC or anyone else contacts you asking for potentially sensitive information which you do not feel comfortable to give, then do not give it.

“Your bank will not ask you for a PIN number or password so, if asked, do not give this information out.
"If you are at all suspicious take a telephone number and say you will call them back. Use a different telephone line.
“Check the call is genuine.”
Victims may also have been encouraged to divulge their bank details over the telephone to the fraudster, as well as handing their bank cards over to couriers who pass the cards onto the fraudsters.
A study by the Financial Ombudsman Service revealed 85 per cent of victims were aged 55 and over, with 20 per cent losing over £20,000.refNWP

Re: the first one:

This is a growing issue which traps people extremely easily.

Also known as “reverse billed” messages, premium-rate texts come from four, five or six-digit numbers and are normally for subscription services such as games, vouchers or weather updates.

They generally cost about £1.50 each, which is why phone users who don’t realise they are being charged can quickly end up with huge bills.

Texts of this kind can only be sent out if you sign up to the service.

Unfortunately, however, a lot of people subscribe to premium-rate texts by mistake – for example by failing to tick a box on a website or replying to a message.

If you suspect you've been caught...

Quote
How to stop premium-rate texts – and get a refund

• If you receive an unwanted text from a premium-rate service, replying STOP should block future messages from that company.

• If that doesn’t work, use the PhonepayPlus Number Checker (phonepayplus.org.uk) to find the service provider’s contact details and tell it you want the messages stopped.

• Or ask your network provider to block the texts.

• If all else fails, complain to PhonepayPlus on 0800 500212 or complete the complaint form on its website. It may be able to get you a refund if you can show that you did not sign up for the service (remember not to delete the texts proving this).

The regulator also has the power to fine companies up to £250,000 and bar them from operating premium-rate services.

North Wales Police are reminding motorists of the importance of adhering to road restrictions in the vicinity of the tramway on The Great Orme.

With up to 40 trams a day running 7 days a week, public safety in the area is a priority and as such drivers are being urged to adhere to the Highway Code and to follow the various signage that is in place along Old Road.

Tramway Manager, Neil Jones said, “We’re reminding motorists not to take illegal shortcuts along this road. We regularly see motorists disregard the road signs, which can lead to vehicles coming into conflict with the tram; it also sets a bad example to drivers unfamiliar with the area.”

“Signage is in place and the restrictions are there for a purpose,” added PC Lee Openshaw. “Unfortunately, there have been examples already this year of motorists driving along restricted areas which can endanger the safety of not only them but others using the tram. Some sections of the road are extremely steep. We work in partnership with the management at the tram and will continue to patrol the area. We urge motorist to please follow the Highway Code.”

“Selfish ” fly-tippers killed three cows in Conwy after dumping lethal cuttings in a field.

The 16-month-old Friesians were found dead in a farmer’s field in Dolwen after eating poisonous tree clippings.
Police are investigating the incident which happened yesterday and are appealing for information.
Sgt Rob Taylor of the North Wales Police Rural Crime Team has labelled the act as “atrocious” and slammed the culprits as “selfish”.
He said a post-mortem examination had been carried out on the animals which showed that plant toxins were to blame for their deaths.

“We want information, please help us.
"It has to be someone who is cutting trees yesterday probably in the Colwyn Bay area.
“We can solve this with the help of the public in Colwyn Bay and the surrounding area."
He added: “I’m appalled that the selfish action of someone dumping their waste has killed three animals.
"We are investigating and will analyse CCTV.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.

From the Daily Post:

"Careless cops who put the wrong fuel into police vehicles have cost North Wales taxpayers nearly £14,000 since 2009.

Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act shows bungling North Wales Police officers have refuelled vehicles incorrectly on more than 75 occasions during that period.

The mishaps have led to a whopping bill of £13,962.80 – all of which is public money used for repair work including flushing out the wrong fuel.

Despite the force fitting the majority of its fleet with a bright yellow flap that says ‘diesel’ on the filler cap since 2006, bobbies have continued to make the refuelling error although incidents have been on the decline during the past three years.

A North Wales Police spokesman said: “Although it is unfortunate that any mistakes are made when putting fuel into our vehicles, there are relatively few incidents. In 2014 there were eight such incidents out of a total 34,014 fuel transactions.”

Jonathan Isaby, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, says the public deserve better.

He explained: “The authorities simply cannot afford to waste taxpayers’ money on these costly mistakes, particularly at a time when colleagues within the force are facing pay freeze or worse.

“The authorities must pull their socks up, taxpayers deserve better.”

The most recent errors happened within the space of two days – July 22 and 24 this year – with repair bills totalling £424.

Back in 2009, there were a total of 18 refuelling errors which cost the taxpayer £4,065.49. The biggest repair bill that year was £1,477 – the largest over the seven year period –while the lowest was £60.

There was a drop in incidents during 2010 with 11 errors leading to a £1,695.97 bill, while in 2011 there were 12 at a total cost of £2,468.78.

In 2012 there were 16 incidents resulting in a £2,355.95 bill, but 2013 saw a drop with nine at a cost of £1,606.53 to the taxpayer.

Last year there were eight refuelling errors which led to a repair bill of £1,197.17, while 2015 has seen just three cases at a combined cost of 3572.91.

In its Freedom of Information response to the request made by the Daily Post for the period of 2013-15, North Wales Police state: “Vehicle manufacturers in recent years have identified that drivers filling vehicles with incorrect fuel had become an everyday issue and have put measures in place to prevent this.

“Older vehicles in our fleet are fitted with a bright yellow flap with ‘diesel’ clearly marked on it that covers the filler cap. Newer vehicles have fuel filler caps that fit the nozzles on fuel forecourts that are now fitted on to vehicles as standard specifically to prevent mis-fuelling.”

This problem could have been solved years ago if the fuel companies had fitted different shaped nozzles on their pumps for each fuel but I guess they're happier making the extra money from the mistakes made by hapless motorists. It's easy to mock a policeman for making the mistake but if he/she drives an unleaded car away from work & only occasionally drives a company vehicle which is a diesel you can see how it is a bit of a ticking time-bomb. If the nozzles for each fuel were a different shape they would never get further than attempting to put it in the tank before realising their mistake.

The other day I was driving down Llandudno Road by Llandrillo College and the Police Camera Van was parked in it's usual place.  It seems a waste of valuable resources as all local drivers will be aware of the Police's routine.
They could be employed doing other things and I wondered where are the Police when you need them.
Anyway today I was driving on the A55 and was overtaking another car, behind me was a white car a safe distance away and tailgating the white car was a black Volkswagon.
The VW then went into the slow lane and then into the hard shoulder and undertook both my car and the car I was overtaking.   He then undertook another car and off he went.
I was shocked by the action of the VW driver but then even more shocked when someone else performed the same action.     Driving on the A55 is bad anyway but these two drivers were dangerous.
Where were the Police or their cameras when this was going on?        :rage:

They are more interested in catching someone travelling at 34mph in a 30 limit, the natural limit for the road near Llandrillo college is 40 in my opinion, which is no doubt why they are there with their nasty speed tax van so often!  &shake&

I was overtaking that vehicle on the A55 yesterday and my speed was about 70 mph when that idiot in the black Volkswagon  used the hard shoulder to undertake me and the car  I was overtaking.    They think they can get away with it because of the lack of Police presence on the A55.
Luckily the car I was driving had a video camera working at the time so I did a brief commentary on it and when I got home I checked the car details with the DVLA.
Surprise, surprise the car tax had expired    &shake&

Shocking death and injury toll for bikers in North Wales revealed as cops launch crackdown

More than 80 bikers were killed or seriously injured on the roads of North Wales last year.

The shock statistic emerged as North Wales Police begins a campaign to try to reduce the number of motorcycle-related deaths on the region's roads.

Although motorcyclists represent 1% of road traffic, they are 18% of all fatalities and 25% of all KSI (killed or seriosuly injured) casualties in North Wales.
From Friday, officers from the Roads Policing Unit will target popular meeting spots for enthusiasts and will patrol certain routes as part of Operation Darwen.

Operation Darwen is an all-Wales campaign which runs from Easter to early autumn and is aimed at motorcycle safety and reducing casualties on the roads.
In 2014, a total of 108 riders/pillions were killed or seriously injured in the region compared to 71 in 2013.

I must admit I did "undertake" once on Penrhyn Hill - years ago when I was young and had a Honda 200.  The "idiot" in the outside lane was doing about 15mph though.

Not that I drive anything these days (and never passed my test in a car), I have mellowed. I can still see slow driving (not your 28 in a 30) as a problem though (and Llandudno area seemed to get it's fair share - do you still get the ones round the Orme who seem to pay more attention to spotting a goat or looking out to sea than they do to the road and other users?).

Round here in Norfolk, it sometimes seems to me on the 60mph main roads we have the < 40mph drivers and the maniacs and sooner or later one of the latter will get frustrated. I wish eg. Cromer to Norwich was a dual carriageway.

Why do i always seem to be disagreeing with my friends on the forum. Dear young Hugo, there is plenty wrong with doing 30 in a 40. The cars behind may have a good reason to need to go drive close to the maximum. If you go for a test you are supposed to make "reasonable progress" and driving at 30 in a 40 is not reasonable progress. No, its not against the law. But it makes other drivers take risks. And at certain times of the day that stretch by the paddling pool has drivers continually doing it after around 9.30 in the morning. Its usually o.k before 9 a.m., regular drivers getting to work i suppose. But after 9.30 the non workers often of advancing years decide to take a leisurely trip into town, much to my annoyance on my way to the golf.

But after 9.30 the non workers often of advancing years decide to take a leisurely trip into town, much to my annoyance on my way to the golf.
Precisely Mike!
I say, if the limit is 40mph, then do 41mph, they ain't going to 'do' you for that!

As the speedo in your car is not calibrated you could be doing nearer 45 mph using your method which could result in a ticket if caught.

I think it's the other way round, as speedos in UK cars are set to 'underread', so if it shows 41 you're probably doing 39. It's that way on all our cars, certainly.

Why do i always seem to be disagreeing with my friends on the forum. Dear young Hugo, there is plenty wrong with doing 30 in a 40.

Thanks Mike, it's a long time since I was called that!       The only reason I was behind the guy was because we had reached the double white lines and I couldn't overtake otherwise I would have done so.     But then the guy put his foot down and broke the speed limit coming down the hill, his driving was inconsistent unless of course he was messing about knowing I couldn't overtake previously on those double white lines

Title: Re: Police News & Announcements

The problem with speed limits is they are fixed and take no account of conditions.

Drive at 29mph along Mostyn Street on a busy Saturday afternoon ... legal YES, safe NO!

Drive at 80mph along the A55 when it is quiet and no-one else around ... legal NO, safe YES!

Speed should be determined by the common sense of the driver, taking into account weather conditions, other road users and his/her own and the car capabilities ... but you cannot police for all that.

As for speedometers - I have approached the sign on the end of the dual carriageway out of Llandudno with my digital speedo steady on 40 - the camera tells me 37.  Most cars are up to 10% reading over what they're actually doing.

North Wales driving instructor arrested on suspicion of fraud

Gareth Edwards, an investigator with the DVSA said the organisation urges all learners to ensure their instructor is qualified to teach by checking they display a valid DVSA badge in their windscreen.
He said: “Learners can also use the free Find a driving instructor service on GOV.UK to see details of their nearest instructors who are approved and registered with the DVSA.
“All approved driving instructors undergo regular assessments of their ability to teach and are also CRB checked.

A green badge shows that the instructor is fully qualified and undergoes regular DSA checks while a pink badge indicates a trainee who can teach for six months while acquiring teaching experience.
Badges should carry the instructor’s photograph, a unique reference number and an expiry date.
Learner drivers should check their instructor’s qualifications before getting into the car.

He said: “As a force we regularly advice people to check that taxis and private hire vehicles they travel in are appropriately registered. Passengers then have the confidence that the person driving that vehicle has been subjected to a process and a series of checks.

“It’s exactly the same with learner drivers. They’re getting into a vehicle with a stranger they may know nothing about.”

To report someone who you think is an illegal driving instructor phone DVSA on 0191 201 8120 or email fraudandintegrity@dsa.gsi.gov.uk

What you need to know as microchipping dogs becomes law

Dog owners have just one week left to get their pets microchipped.
On April 6, it will become a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped in Wales so they can be added to a central database listing every pooch in the UK.

A microchip is roughly the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the dog’s skin between its shoulder blades.
Each chip contains a unique 15-digit identification code that is listed on a national database which holds the owner’s contact details including phone number and address.
If a dog is lost or abandoned, the pet can be scanned for a chip and the owner’s details can be found immediately.

Any vet can microchip your pet with the average cost being about £20.
The Dogs Trust has also volunteered to fit microchips at its re-homing centres and community events before April 6.
You can also take your dogs and cats to the RSPCA’s Bryn-y-Maen Animal Centre in Upper Colwyn Bay.
Dog owners can also visit their nearest Pets at Home store , to get their pets microchipped.

If you are stopped by a council warden or police officer and they discover your dog is not microchipped you will be given an enforcement notice, giving you 21 days to comply with the law.
Anyone who fails to do so can face a fine of up to £500.

If you move home or change your phone number you must also contact the database, if you fail to keep your details up to date you can also face a £500 fine.

Just seen the dreaded speed tax camera van on the road from Penrhyn Bay to Llandrillo College, not in it's usual position near the college, this time it is parked off the road behind a wall near the houses at the Penrhyn Bay end of the road, driving from the college towards Penrhyn Bay it will be tricky to spot, very sneaky!         Unfortunately I can tell you exactly when the 30mph limit came into force there! I used to travel to work for 29 years on that route from Llandudno to Mochdre from 1969 to 1998 and I remember the limit being reduced from 60 to 40mph during that time. Up till then when it was unrestricted it used to be known as the "Links Stretch" in the 60's and 70's after the Hutchison and Wilde BMC garage there, later the GPO, where the houses are now. I switched jobs in May 1998, and while travelling on that route shortly afterwards to try and sort out problems with my PAYE at the Colwyn Bay tax office I was surprised to see two Pcs with a "Speed Camera" by the old Links Garage and I thought "why are they here if it's 40mph" as I drove past at 38 mph. I subsequently received a £40 fine and endorsement a few days later and have been suitably careful ever since.
Incidentally we passed the "Arrive Alive" van on the road between the Fon Tom chip-shop in Deganwy and the Junction at about 3pm today, they are normally at the bottom of Tyn-y-Coed or on the approach to Maggie Murphy's when they are in that area. The really annoying part of this story is that I eventually got a £58 rebate from the Tax Office which was immediately wiped out by the speeding fine, (stop laughing Hugo.....).

Well, you win some and you lose some Gwynant!       ;D

Now it's your turn to have a laugh.    Many years ago Colwyn Road had  a 30 mph restriction on it and I was driving along it on the way to work one morning.
The cops were tucked in the gateway of the Villa Marina armed with their radar guns and my friend Tommy D from the estate was parked a short distance away.   Needless to say I was stopped for speeding doing 35 mph in a 30mph zone and got fined £5.00
When I spoke to Tommy afterwards he said that the next person didn't actually stop and they chased him and caught him in Penrhyn Bay and he got fined £4.00

North Wales Police's top tips on how to keep your house safe this summer      RefPioneer

HOMEOWNERS are being warned to make sure their property is secure as daylight hours get longer and people spend more time out and about.
North Wales Police have said opportunist thieves will target homes where windows are left open or where doors and garden gates are left unlocked.
DS Elfyn Hughes said; “We often see a rise in burglary as the days get longer and the weather improves, so we’d urge residents be mindful of this tendency and to take responsibility for securing their homes and possessions.
“Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary.
“Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden.

“Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox, Never leave keys in hiding places such as under flower-pots or on top of door-frames. Burglars know where to look.

“If you're not sure who is at your door, don't open it and check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming to be from, for example, a gas, electricity or water company or the council or police.

“If you’re going away on holiday avoid discussing holiday plans on public social networking sites - burglars can use any information you post on there to their advantage.”

Advice from police includes, where possible fit an alarm and security lighting, to make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition, to keep ladders and tools stored away, to ensure side gates are locked and to remove valuables from view of ground floor windows.

Anyone with information about burglaries should contact North Wales Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police issue security warning over Santander cashpoints
Police have warned people in Lancashire and Wilmslow, Cheshire not to use Santander cash machines over fears they have been compromised.
The warning follows reports of suspicious devices on the bank’s machines across the county last week.
Officers are concerned that criminals have targeted the machines in an attempt to steal card details and cash, and urged those who have lost money to contact the bank.

A spokesman for the force said it feared the issue could be more widespread. He said: “We are advising the public to be vigilant, in particular of Santander machines, but of any cash machines.

One of the unfortunate things about the elections for the position of Police Commissioner is that you receive very little information about candidates unless you seek it out. The majority of voters ( who bother) will no doubt stick to their traditional favourite political party and vote for that person although if you can add former Police Inspector to your voting paper I'm sure it might help sway a few folk to vote for you.
It's a nice little number being elected, and it's a question of jobs for the boys once you get in.

I think this appointment might turn out a big mistake by the electorate who voted not having a clue about the person other than the fact that he's a) Plaid Cymru and b)an ex Police Inspector which in the grand scheme of things is more middle than senior manager. He now finds himself in a position where make the Chief Constable dance to his tune. Wonder if he can be objective and not be tempted to use his new found position to extract some retribution for his failure to get nearer to the top when in the force.
He has , In my humble opinion, demonstrated that he isn't exactly the type of person fit for the job with his stupid comments about how to undermine GCHQ.

We need more dashcams on North Wales' roads to tackle dangerous driving, says commissioner.

More motorists should use dashboard-mounted cameras to tackle deaths on the roads, says the new police and crime commissioner.
Plaid Cymru’s Arfon Jones, who was elected last month, says footage from dashcams can play a role in securing convictions and deterring dangerous driving.

Mr Jones said: “Dashcams in cars and helmet-cams used by cyclists can show near misses and anti-social driving, and I think we should do more of this and use more evidence from people.
“It’s vitally important for us all that we find these people who drive in an anti-social way and get them off the roads as soon as possible.

Do you think more dashcams on the roads are a good idea?

Yes Steve, every car should have them as there are a lot of idiots on the roads nowadays.     The strange thing with dashcams and satnavs is that unless they are fitted outside of the range of your windscreen wipers then they are illegal.
Mine had to be removed before it would pass the MOT.
I've not heard of anyone being stopped by the Police because of the position of their dashcam/satnav  but if they are, then they should look at the positioning of the equipment in the Police car  because I'm unaware of any legislation that excludes them from this type of thing

Cyclists are the worst of the lot for posting footage, and are the worst of the lot when it comes to careless "driving".

They do that on purpose so you can't overtake until the opposite lane is clear, instead of trying to squeeze through and risk clipping the cyclist. I can see the merit behind the thought but it does frustrate the motorist being held up for a few seconds/minutes.

A dog with a keen nose for sniffing out illegal substances joined officers in a drugs operation in Llandudno on Saturday night.

Response officers, assisted by Special Constables, along with the drugs dog were involved in the work which saw them undertake foot patrols around town and called at a number of licenced premises.

No arrests were made however the drugs dog did indicate a number of individuals who admitted to officers that they had taken drugs earlier in the evening.

One of the officers involved in the operation, PC Liam Gray said:  “The people out that evening were receptive of the dog,  seemed happy to see the dog was out working and people seemed re-assured.”

District Inspector Kelly Isaacs added: “This operation is just part of the pro-active work that we undertake in the area to crack down on drugs. We will continue to use various methods to tackle the sale and use of illegal substances.”

North Wales public to decide how cash seized from criminals is spent.
The way cash seized from crime kingpins is spent will be opened up to a public vote.
Ill-gotten gains will be put to good use with local groups urged to bid for a share of £40,000.
The cash on offer includes money confiscated from offenders through the Proceeds of Crime Act, along with a contribution by Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones.

Members of the public will vote for the winner online, with £2,500 apiece for two groups in each county and £5,000 each for two groups that operate across North Wales.

The Community Fund is being set up jointly by Arfon Jones and the North Wales Police and Community Trust (PACT).
Mr Jones said: “I think it’s an excellent idea that money coming from the proceeds of crime is being put back into communities to repair the damage that’s been caused by criminal activity.

“It’s an opportunity for people to say what they want, what their priorities are, and what they would like to see more of, and the Community Fund is giving them money to do what they think is best for their communities.

“I think that smaller community groups can do a great deal to make communities safer, reduce crime and reduce re-offending.

Drivers caught using handheld mobile phones in Britain are to face "much tougher penalties", with fines and points doubling, the government says.
Under new rules expected to come in next year, drivers will get six points on their licence and face a £200 fine.
Newly qualified drivers could be made to retake their test the first time they are caught.
The RAC welcomed the move but said cuts to traffic police meant many drivers did not think they would be caught.
The new rules, which will apply to England, Scotland and Wales, could also see more experienced drivers going to court if they offend twice, and facing possible fines of up to £1,000 and at least a six-month driving ban.
The increased penalties will be accompanied by a high-profile government Think! campaign highlighting the dangers of handheld mobile phone use at the wheel.
The Department for Transport said it expected the changes to take effect in the first half of 2017.

It's not before time that they increased the Penalty points and the fine for driving and using a hand held phone.    It has been questioned as to whether the Police have the man power to follow it through but I can't understand why they haven't introduced a similar legislation like they have for speed cameras.
If the Police capture on camera a driver using a hands held phone then an automatic fine and points would be charged against the  owner of the vehicle.    If the owner of the vehicle was not driving he or she would have to disclose who was driving or otherwise they would have to accept the fine and penalty points.

Six points and £200 fine for drivers caught using mobile phone behind the wheel
North Wales Police to launch new get tough law on 1 March.

Motorists who get six points in the first two years after passing their test will automatically lose their licence.

Last autumn we launched our #OpSnap campaign, an initiative which allows video submissions and photographic evidence to be sent to us from people who have witnessed driving offences. Over recent months we have received footage capturing motoring offences including careless and dangerous driving, people on mobile telephones and people being distracted whilst using their smart devices behind the wheel.

Lots of changes going on.....

North Wales motorists facing speeding fines hike up to £1,000
A new system being brought in April in will see drivers penalised for motoring offences according to their weekly income.

Fines for motorists caught going well above the speed limit will start from 150 per cent of their weekly income rather than the existing level of 100 per cent - to a maximum of £1,000

Rogue traders have targeted vulnerable people in the Conwy Valley area.

A number of incidents have been reported to North Wales Police in the past week where a man and a woman have visited properties offering tree cutting services.
The two people, who are believed to be travelling in a white Land Rover Defender, are offering to undertake the work for an excessive amount of money.

Sgt Lisa Armstrong said: “We are asking people to be vigilant and are strongly advising residents, particularly the elderly, not to accept any requests from cold callers to complete any form of work at their home addresses.

Police are urging residents to be vigilant and follow three steps to ensure doorstep crime is reduced.
The three step message to the public is: If in doubt, keep them out; be prepared, be in control; and call a neighbour or the police.

North Wales Police has issued a stark warning to anyone travelling abroad this year.

The force has urged tourists to think carefully before posting details of any trips away they have planned over the coming months.
And if that wasn't enough, they revealed one fact that could come as a shock to residents - posting about your summer holiday on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter could invalidate your home insurance.

The idea is that sharing status updates and photos on your social media accounts could inadvertently let burglars know that your property was vacant - and ripe for the picking from thieves.
It comes after industry experts expressed similar concerns, supported by recent statistics on burglaries in the UK.

Research shows that a large proportion of home raids take place when the homeowner isn't there, so it's particularly important to make your property safe while you're away for long periods of time.

Yesterday's warning by the North Flintshire Local Policing Team however targets one particular way that the public are putting their properties, and home insurance, at risk.
In a tweet, they shared a photo of a holiday countdown, which often appear on social media timelines as users share how long is left until their next holiday.

Did you know some companies invalidate Home Insurance Policies if you make a social media post like this and then get burgled whilst away!  Maybe save checking in at airports or uploading holiday snaps until you get home.
The force account also advised against checking in at airport and recommended uploading holiday photos once you're back home.

The topic has long been the subject of much discussion, including by other experts such as Alex Iszatt.
The Crime Specialist collaborated with insurer Admiral to reduce the risks faced by homeowners in the UK.
He revealed that 36% of social media users have mentioned future holidays on their accounts, a fact which is particularly worrying considering almost 50% of burglaries take place when the homeowner is away.  ref DP

Police are warning shoppers to beware of a scam which involves distracting people in supermarket carparks.

North Wales Police have said thieves could be targeting shoppers after an incident in Conwy county which saw an attempt to steal from a woman's car.
She was distracted while returning her shopping trolley before an attempt was made to steal from her car, police said.

In a post on Facebook , the force's West Conwy Coastal team said: "An incident occurred this week in a local supermarket car park.
"A lady returned to her car with her shopping which she placed into the back of her car.
"She then returned her trolley to the trolley park at which point she was engaged in conversation by an unknown man.
"He claimed not to speak English and began asking for directions."

They added: "What is now clear is that this was a tactic to delay the lady from returning to her unattended car whilst a second offender went through the car probably searching for her handbag.

"On this occasion they were unsuccessful because her handbag was in the boot but it could just as easily have been on the passenger seat."
The force have said there are simple ways to avoid being taken in by this crime.

They said motorists should always leave their cars locked when leaving them unattended, and should also always be alert to signs of being deliberately distracted by a stranger.

Title: Re: Emergency situation locator app
Post by: SteveH on September 13, 2019, 12:56:57 pm
A FIRE chief has urged residents to download an app that can be used to find their location in an emergency situation.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) started to implement What3Words in August and has already put it to use to promptly locate a forest fire. The app, created by private developers in 2013, has a geo-coding system that generates three unique words assigned to the three square metre grid where the smartphone is located, which can then be sent to another app user.

Peter Davis, head of control at the joint communications centre in St Asaph, said NWFRS is joining emergency services across the UK in promoting the app because it can “really make a big difference in times of need”.

He said: “The smartphone user will identify from the app which three words are the unique identifier for the location and it is then possible for others to identify their location once these words are conveyed.”

“While this will not replace our current use of standard gazetteers and mapping it may help assist in those cases where all other methods of location have been exhausted.”

Mr Davis said NWFRS used the app “within a few weeks of going live” to pinpoint the map reference of a fire at Gwydr Forest, “ensuring that the correct appliance was mobilised to deal with the incident as quickly as possible”.

He added: “This is very useful for places that do not have a recognised address or for individuals that are lost or are unsure of their location.”  ref Pioneer

More than half of burglaries across North Wales happened at unlocked properties figures have shown.

According to North Wales Police (NWP) data, between January and October 2019, 54% of the hundreds of break-ins happened at houses and buildings where doors and windows were not locked.

Police chiefs have urged the public to lock up and deter  burglars, with a simple turn of a key to secure a property being one of the most effective defences.

"Last year 54% of burglaries occurred where properties were unlocked.

"Don't make it easy for them and prevent it happening to you by locking your doors and windows."

also urged people to keep all keys hidden out of reach in the house and to lock sheds and garages.
And if people see anything suspicious, they urged them to call 999.

North Wales Police is concerned the man, who has told people he needs to get rid of the merchandise before heading back to Italy, might be selling fake goods.
He has been operating in the Llandudno area, and the force is now asking the public to be on their guard.

A spokesman for the force's West Conwy Coastal policing team said: "This week we have had two reports from Llandudno of what appears to be someone trying to sell counterfeit coats and watches.

"A man described as well-built and speaking with an Italian accent has been approaching people in the town centre and using high-pressure sales techniques to get them to buy the it

Police asked anyone who is approached by the man to get in touch with them on 101, quoting reference numbers X174708 and X175410.

This is actually a variant of the "Please give us access t your computer so we can raid your bank account' scam that's been going for some years. The Amazon Prime bit is merely the latest vector.

As always there are two bits of golden advice we should all follow at all times:

1.  Never, ever give anyone access to your computer unless you've rung them first. Even then, think very carefully before you do it.

2. Never, ever follow a link in an email.

The pledge from the region’s police and crime commissioner, Arfon Jones, came after the North Wales Police and Crime Panel unanimously gave the green light for a 25p a week - increase in the cost of policing.

The 4.5 per cent increase – the equivalent of a one minute landline call – will cost Band D householders just an extra £12.51 a year.

Police are warning disabled shoppers to be on their guard after a spate of thefts.

The warning comes after several reports of a distraction theft technique being employed in supermarket car parks and in on-street parking spaces around the region.

The thieves are stealing blue badges, which allow motorists to park for up to three hours free of charge and in disabled bays.
According to police, there was an incident at Aldi in Prestatyn on Tuesday.

A man was said to have approached a vehicle trying to sell leather coats. While the shoppers were distracted by the man, an accomplice reached into the vehicle and snatched the disabled parking permit.

A similar theft was attempted at Tesco in Llandudno Junction on Wednesday.
Both men were described as being of Mediterranean appearance, with Italian accents. They were said to be driving a red car.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "We saw this technique used by thieves in Llandudno last year.
"We urge motorists to please be aware and to report any suspicious incidents."

According to the Department for Transport, thefts of parking permits for disabled motorist have quadrupled in recent years.

Retired police officers say thousands of former colleagues would be willing to rejoin their forces and help the country cope with coronavirus.

Home Office figures show about 22,000 police officers in England and Wales retired over the past five years.
The Metropolitan Police is already asking retirees to come back.

Former Ch Supt Kul Mahay said many officers would "jump at the challenge" to help people feel safe.

The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) said it was working with the government to facilitate the return of recently retired officers, depending on “local needs”.

Mr Mahay said retired officers had “a lot of experience” they could bring back to the service, but it was “subject for debate” whether they should be given full powers.

“It's possible we could return in more of a support role, to free up uniformed and non-uniformed staff to get out there and maintain order,” he said.     cont.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52067772 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52067772)

Second bit of police news today...

Police are urging people not to put lives at risk by making unnecessary 999 calls amid the coronavirus outbreak.

North Wales Police says it has seen a significant increase in the number of calls over the last week, particularly on non-urgent matters.

Superintendent Neil Thomas, who is in charge of the control room in St Asaph, said: "This week has been another challenging one for North Wales Police with a surge of public calls into the control room from people trying to seek clarification on various issues related to the coronavirus.

"Whilst I appreciate that people are calling us in good faith, these calls are dealt with by emergency call handlers who are already working on high demand and reduced staffing levels.

"I would like to emphasise that we have well-rehearsed plans in place to ensure that we continue to provide a service the public.

"However, unnecessary calls into the control room is having a significant impact on our ability to deal with genuine calls and is putting people’s lives at risk.

"Please only call the police when necessary and do not revert to dialling 999 if we are unable to answer your 101 calls or webchat."

North Wales Police say there has also been an increase in the amount of reports being made about potential breaches of Government guidelines on social distancing and isolation.

"Our initial approach will be to engage with people who are not abiding to the guidelines before explaining why these rules are important and encouraging them to follow them," said Supt Thomas.

"If they are not compliant, then as a last resort we will enforce the emergency legislation brought in this week where necessary."

He added: "I want to encourage people to continue using the live webchat and email functions for non-urgent police matters.

"Thank you to everyone who has been doing this already in an effort to reduce the demand on our emergency call handlers, who are already working extremely hard to continue to support our response to incidents."

He added those seeking advice around COVID-19 and what it means for them should refer to the UK Government, Welsh Government and Public Health Wales websites for information and guidance.

Police who stopped a car in North Wales during the coronavirus lockdown found that the four young men inside were making their way back from a party.

Despite the rules on social distancing and non-essential travel, the men were seen in Old Colwyn on Saturday night before officers split them up and made sure they left in different directions.

North Wales Alliance Armed Policing unit wrote on Twitter: "How to attract attention: Driving a car, 4 young males on board returning from a party in Colwyn Bay."

They said the driver was arrested for driving while disqualified and the other occupants were warned about social distancing.

The Roads Policing Unit, which was also involved in the incident, wrote on Twitter: "Vehicle carrying four people and driver did not have licence or insurance. Vehicle seized.  ref DP

That incident shows you how a certain type of person will not heed the advice of the Government and full marks to the Police for stopping the vehicle and seizing the car
Just a shame that the other passengers were not fined and the Police find the source of the party

My wife had a phone conversation with a friend just now and the friend alleged that the Police were taking notes of number plates of cars cars on the West Shore and it could be people going there to walk their dogs or just for the start of their daily exercise

Coronavirus: Stop bombarding North Wales Police 999 and 101 lines with queries about dog walking        refDP
Chief constable, Carl Foulkes says the force is being overwhelmed with general Covid-19 calls which are getting in the way of real emergencies

North Wales Police's top cop today urged the public to stop bombarding the 999 and 101 lines with calls about coronavirus.

Chief constable Carl Foulkes issued the desperate plea as he revealed the force control room has been overwhelmed with people asking for general advice about Covid-19, as the outbreak takes hold.

Mr Foulkes said the volume of calls are preventing control room staff from answering genuine emergencies

The most common call is from dog owners asking if they are allowed to drive to a destination to walk their pet.

"The most common question is people asking if they can drive somewhere to walk their dog and...... the answer is no.

Lowest of the low, bad enough at anytime............I thought the XXXXXXX who slashed the tyre's in CYD were bad.

t saddens us to report that we have discovered our St David's Hospice Donation Centre in Mochdre has been broken in to and extensive damage has been caused.

It is estimated that we have lost thousands of pounds worth of items including; designer clothes, electrical goods, and jewellery, which would have been sold raise essential funds.

This adds to the loss of earnings due to the recent closure of the 26 Hospice Shops due to Covid-19.

Trystan Pritchard, Chief Executive said:
“It’s extremely hurtful that someone would target the Hospice at this incredibly difficult time. We are fighting for our survival as we have lost most of our income because of the current coronavirus crisis. This will make it even harder for us to find enough funds to care for local people at the end of their life.”

The contract of North Wales’ Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner will not be renewed after four years in the role, it has been confirmed.

Appointed in 2016 to assist Arfon Jones shortly after his election to the post, Ann Griffith is also a former Anglesey county councillor for the Bro Aberffraw ward.

But in a statement today, Arfon Jones confirmed that Ms Griffith’s contract for the £42,000-a-year post would not be renewed, adding that he would continue without a deputy for the remaining 12 months until the May 2021 election, postponed for a year due to the lockdown.

SECOND POLICE WARNING TODAY, see previous Rhos on Sea message

FIREARMS holders in North Wales are being reminded to be on their guard against thieves posing as firearms licensing officers.

The warning comes after a firearms holder in another force area received a suspicious phone call.

The female claimed to be from the force's Firearms Licensing Unit and said that someone would have to visit the property to inspect his security.

The firearms certificate holder wasn’t convinced that the call was genuine and inquiries with the force’s Firearms Licensing Unit revealed that no-one from the team had recently made contact with this individual.

Andy Broadhead, firearms licensing manager at North Wales Police, said: “We are continuing to process grant and renewal applications and will contact applicants by telephone individually to discuss the most appropriate way of processing their application.

“We only visit by appointment and I would like remind applicants that if they are any doubt as to the identity of the members our team please ask for a name and photo ID for confirmation.

MORE than 400 insurance policies have been cancelled or voided thanks to an inspired initiative to disrupt criminal activity.

Since starting in 2018, North Wales Police’s Operation Confine has targeted criminals by identifying and prosecuting those involved in vehicle insurance application fraud.

It’s a criminal offence to fail to disclose material information such as unspent convictions when asked by insurance companies. However, Op Confine isn’t about checking whether an individual has forgotten to mention a minor road traffic offence a number of years ago, it’s very much aimed that those who cause the most harm to our communities and use the road network to facilitate their criminal activities.

Police are urging dog owners across North Wales to make sure their pets are microchipped following a spate of dog thefts across the UK.

They are aware of reports of suspicious behaviour from dog owners fearing their pets may be stolen.
Earlier this week North Wales Police officers asked residents to be vigilant in the following reports of males in a white transit van offering leaflets but primarily, showing an interest in houses and gardens with dogs.

Ensuring your pet is microchipped - with the correct information, and if your dog is kept outside making sure that their kennel is secure.
“Dogs are often part of the family and their loss or theft is devastating for owners.

“Across the UK demand for dogs increased during lockdown and as the demand increased so did the price, which has sadly led to dogs in some areas being stolen with a view to being sold on at a high price.

Officers added that if you are buying a dog please only do so from reputable breeders or contact one of the many animal rescue centres across North Wales.     ref DP

Conwy and Denbighshire, as well as Flintshire and Wrexham, went into local lockdown at 6pm on Thursday, October 2 in a bid to slow the spread of Coronavirus.

The restrictions mean that residents will not be able to travel in and out of the county in which they live without a valid reason.

This sounds positive, be interesting to see the results..........

Alcohol-fuelled criminals in Wales can be ordered to wear sobriety tags to monitor their drinking bans from Wednesday.

The ankle tags - which will be extended to England next year - will monitor an offender's sweat every 30 minutes and alert the probation service if they have consumed any alcohol.

Anyone found breaching an alcohol abstinence order, a new power allowing courts to slap offenders with drinking bans for up to 120 days, can face being hauled back to court for another punishment such as a fine, an extension of the order, or they could be sent to jail.

Probation staff are also alerted when the tags are tampered with and can distinguish between drinks and other types of alcohol such as hand sanitiser or perfume.

POLICE in North Wales have been coughed on, spat at or bitten in dozens of attacks during the Covid-19 pandemic, figures show.

The Police Federation of England and Wales say the attacks show 'we are living in a more violent society which needs to take a long hard look at itself', adding that those caught should be sent to prison.

North Wales Police recorded 100 attacks on police officers which included coughing, spitting or biting from February to November last year.

That was up from the 85 reported during the same period in 2019.

As officers face this additional challenge in policing, they are also coping with coronavirus – North Wales Police data shows there had been 38 positive Covid-19 tests on police officers up to the beginning of December.

National chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, John Apter, said the attacks on police officers during the pandemic was 'a serious issue for us all'.

He said: “Those who attack emergency workers have a complete lack of respect for anything or anybody. Without doubt, we are living in a more violent society which needs to take a long hard look at itself."

He added: "We need officers to have the very best protection, and there must be a strong deterrent – that deterrent should be time in prison, no ifs, no buts.

"Time and time again we see officers who have been badly assaulted, and they see their attacker being let off with little more than just a slap on the wrist.

"This is offensive and fails to give that deterrent which is so desperately needed."

Overall there were 377 attacks against police officers in North Wales recorded from February to November last year, the same number as in the same period in 2019.

The highest number was recorded in September when there were 52.
In September, the government announced plans to double the maximum jail term for criminals who assault emergency workers to two years.

Firefighters, prison officers and NHS staff are also classed as emergency workers.

Policing minister Kit Malthouse said: "Our brave police officers go to work every day to protect the public and being attacked should never be part of the job.

“Anyone who commits these despicable assaults should expect to face the full force of the law, which is why we are doubling the maximum sentence for those who assault emergency workers.

“This year, as well as continuing to recruit 20,000 additional police officers, we will enshrine a police covenant in law to provide better support for our selfless officers, staff, and their families - one of the key areas will be on the physical protection of officers." ref Pioneer

A POLICE boss and two abuse charities are urging men in North Wales to do more to help women feel safe in the wake of the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard.

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones, the Domestic Abuse Safety Unit North Wales and the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC) North Wales were frustrated the onus appeared to be on women to keep themselves safe rather than men changing their behaviour.

Mr Jones, a former police inspector, said women had posted helpful tips on social media, most of which were small gestures that could make a big difference to how safe women feel walking alone at night.

“Women are not attacked because they park in the wrong place, or because they aren’t paying attention to their surroundings when out in public............“Women get attacked because men attack them.

“Many women have taken to social media to explain what men can do to make women feel safer when they’re out on their own.
“This list is by no means exhaustive, but it’s based on the real experiences of multiple women.”

Keep your distance

When walking behind a girl or woman at night, remember that the closer you are, the more threatening you seem. So make sure to leave a good amount of distance between yourself and her.”

Alert women to their presence – but not by engaging in conversation

Approaching a woman in silence can provoke fear and panic. If you’re behind a woman and she cannot see you, try to make some noise to let them know you aren’t sneaking up behind them – call a friend, jingle keys – basically make any noise to draw attention to yourself

Offer to walk friends home

A stranger wouldn’t appreciate an offer from an unknown man to walk her home. But a friend might. Whilst you might think a route is safe or it’s only a short walk, having a male presence is sadly a valuable tool in warding off unwanted attention.

Talk to other men

Whilst staying away from women and being helpful to your female friends is all well and good, violence towards and harassment of women is a problem that is ingrained in our society. The true solution is changing the way that men treat women – and this means calling out your friends and other men when they’re crossing the line. If you want to make a true and meaningful change, bring up the fact that 97 per cent of young women have experience sexual harassment next time you’re with your male friends. The resulting conversation might surprise you.

Don’t run up from behind

Having someone run up behind you at night can give anyone a fright, but for a girl or woman it can be terrifying. Next time you’re out for an evening jog and see a woman walking ahead… cross the road or make sure to leave a good amount of space while passing.

Don’t stare

If you’re by yourself, being stared at is intimidating and unsettling. Taking out your phone and focusing on something else can go a long way to showing you’re not a threat. Look out the window to focus on something else, or call a friend to have a chat.

Keep comments to yourself

What you might see as just a bit of fun, or even flattering, is actually harassment and can be terrifying to lone women and girls.”

Keep your mates in line

You may not harass women, but if you stay quiet while your mates do then you’re part of the problem.

Be an active bystander

If you notice a woman is uncomfortable with someone’s behaviour, show your support by being an active bystander. It can be as simple as standing between a woman and her harasser to block their line of sight. Ask her if she is OK, and back up anyone else who is intervening

“Women do not ask to be harassed, stalked or assaulted and we have a collective responsibility to hold perpetrators of such abuse to account.

“It is not acceptable to make comments, follow either on foot or in a vehicle, beep at, call to or whistle at women or girls.

“As a mother of two teenage daughters who are regularly made uncomfortable and scared by this type of behaviour. We need to educate our sons, friends, colleagues and others who do this, explaining that it is not acceptable it is not appropriate, and it causes fear, and distress."

RASASC operations manager Fflur Emlyn said: “Women have a right to not only feel safe but BE safe – in public, at home, at work – everywhere.

“Sarah Everard was walking home, everyone of us can identify with this horrific incident, it could’ve been anyone of us: 97 per cent of women in Britain have been sexually harassed at some point during their lives.

“We welcome the Police and Crime Commissioners statement and advice, women are not to blame for being attacked and/or assaulted. There is and should be no shame, blame or guilt for any women who has been attacked/assaulted, it is always the perpetrators fault.

“Let’s talk about this, educate your male friends and family members and don’t be a bystander, all of us in society has a responsibility to hold such perpetrators to account.”

Mr Jones added: “If men follow these common sense guidelines it will make a real difference in making women feel safer when they are out on their own.

“Horrific crimes like this are rare and North Wales remains one of the safest places in the UK to live and work but these simple measures can do a great deal to address the fear of crime.”

Tips to help prevent home burglaries this spring and summer

Move keys away from the doors and windows

If you keep your keys next to your doors and windows, you’re providing thieves with easy access to valuables like cars. Instead, keep them in well-hidden safe places that are out of plain sight and a little more inconspicuous.

If you have to hide a spare key for a pet sitter or for any other reason while you’re away, at least try to make it difficult for a burglar to find by adding a decoy key. Most people hide a spare key underneath the doormat at the front door - so avoid doing this if you can. Instead, glue a decoy key down under the mat and hide the real one in a better location. Doing so will trip burglars up, and they’ll likely think twice before pursuing their illegal activities.

Check windows
Before leaving your home for an extended period of time, you’ll likely double and even triple check that your doors are locked - but do you put the same effort into ensuring all of your home’s windows are locked too? So many people fail to lock their windows, as day-to-day it’s easier to leave them unlocked for various reasons. But burglars will check to see if they can gain easy entry via an unlocked window.

Hide packaging and boxes
If you’ve recently taken delivery of a snazzy new TV or some other costly item, don’t leave the packaging at the side of your outdoor bins or in plain sight. Doing so is basically an advertisement to potential thieves - “look what we have for you to steal!”

Go incognito on social media
If you’re going away on holiday, refrain from posting any pictures or information about it online until you get back home. By flaunting your trip on social media whilst you’re away, you’re basically letting everyone know that you’re not at home - a perfect opportunity for thieves.

You would think tradesmen would have this sort of thing covered, this is the fourth case in as many weeks, reported locally.

A VAN was broken into and thousands of pounds of tools stolen in Mochdre.

North Wales Police said it investigated the incident, which took place overnight on Monday, but no evidence of forced entry were found on the vehicle.

Police have urged van owners to ensure their vehicles and property are secure.

"A Ford Transit van was broken into sometime over Monday night into Tuesday morning in Mochdre," NWP Community Safety Central tweeted.

"There was no obvious signs of forced entry on the van. £2000 worth of power tools have been stolen.

"Ask yourself how secure is my van and could a thief break in and steal my tools."

Labour’s Andy Dunbobbin has taken the vacant Police and Crime Commissioner role in North Wales after a nail-biting run-off.

Speaking in Connah’s Quay, where the results were announced, he said: “I take this role seriously.
“I understand I will be measured against my manifesto pledges by the people of North Wales.

This second story is probably more interesting..........
DOGS from the Cheshire and North Wales Police Alliance Dog section have now been issued with individual collar numbers and ID cards.

The decision to introduce collar numbers was taken following the passing of Finn’s Law in 2019, an initiative which saw PC David Wardell of Hertfordshire Police campaign tirelessly for the better protection of service dogs after his dog, Finn, was stabbed whilst pursuing a suspect.

Finn sustained serious stab wounds to his chest and head, but only criminal damage charges could be brought against the attacker.

Finn’s Law was eventually passed through parliament, which means that anyone who causes unnecessary suffering to a service animal whilst in the commission of its duties, will be able to be charged under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and they will no longer be able to hide behind the defence of fear.

This new legislation, coupled with the government’s plans to increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty offences to five years in prison, will make sure those who harm service animals are punished accordingly.

I have signed up, and will pass on anything of local interest, but everyone can sign up, the more the better, register below.

COMMUNITIES in North Wales can now keep up to date with personalised policing news following the launch of a brand new free messaging service.

North Wales Community Alert has been funded as part of the Home Office Safer Streets Fund and North Wales Police are the first force in Wales to launch the alert system.

The system is currently used by several other police forces in other parts of the UK and has seen positive results and greater engagement with communities. It will allow residents the chance to access up to date information about crime, engagement events, appeals, prevention advice and general policing activity in a certain area.

The system also includes a messaging service that allows users to put forward what matters to them.

Carl Foulkes, Chief Constable, said: “We are delighted to launch North Wales Community Alert which will form a key part of our Local Policing. It is a free messaging service for people who live and work in North Wales to help our communities to stay informed and up to date with news, alerts, appeals, engagement events and general policing activities from your local police teams.

“What makes North Wales Community Alert so useful is that individuals can choose what information they would like to receive from us and how they would like to receive it whether by email, text or voice message - so they don't even need an internet connection - the choice is in their hands.

“North Wales Community Alert isn’t just a broadcast channel, where it is just us telling you. It is a two-way messaging system so that we have an additional route to listen to what our communities have to say.”

Andy Dunbobbin, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “North Wales Community Alert will give our communities a great opportunity to provide feedback to their local neighbourhood police team on the issues that matter most to them, helping us to work together to make North Wales the safest place in the UK.

“Local Police officers will be raising awareness of the scheme and I encourage residents, businesses and community groups to sign up to the system.

“Please take some time to register with North Wales Community Alert, it is quick, simple and completely free.”

COUNCIL tax payers in North Wales will have to shell out more than £6 million extra to pay for policing in North Wales this year, figures reveal.

Home Office data shows £89.7 million in funding for North Wales Police will come from council tax bills in 2021-22 – £6.1 million (7%) more than last year's £83.6 million.

A further £86.4 million will come from central government – up 7% compared to 2020-21.

Across England and Wales, a combined funding pot of £15.9 billion has been agreed for the current financial year – a 4.5% real terms rise since last year.

But the Police Federation of England and Wales wants to see a multi-year funding plan implemented to stop forces operating "hand to mouth" through yearly settlements.

This is the fifth consecutive year in which police funding has increased in real terms, following a decline between 2010-11 and 2016-17.

BURGLARS, thieves and robbers from North Wales will be fitted with GPS tag upon on their release from prison.

The ‘world first’ scheme was initially launched as a pilot in six police force areas, including Cheshire, but is now being extended to cover much of the rest of the country, including in North Wales.

The move is part of the UK Government’s new Beating Crime Plan published on Tuesday to “ensure the public is better protected across all parts of the country.”

With more than half of those convicted of theft and burglary reoffending within a year and almost 80 per cent of cases resulting in no suspect being identified, this will be a vital extra source of intelligence to help police catch these persistent offenders.

Under rules coming into effect in September, burglars, robbers and thieves that have served a prison sentence of a year or more will be automatically fitted with a tag on release, allowing their whereabouts to be monitored by GPS satellites 24 hours a day for up to 12 months.

A warning after what was initially thought to be a silly prank actually turned out to be a clever burglary trick.

On Monday morning (August 16), Maria Celino-Stalker woke up to find a pile of kidney beans on her doorstep.
Initially, she thought that she had just been the victim of a silly prank.

But after mentioning it to her ex-police officer, she found out that the mess was a sign of something more sinister.

Maria now believes the kidney beans were used as a tactic by potential burglars wanting to scope out whether people were at home.
"Apparently this is a known trick of burglars.

"If not cleaned up in a couple of days they know you are not home and in they go.

An aspiring police officer rang 999 to check on the progress of his application to join North Wales Police, it’s been revealed.

It was one of a string of “ridiculous” emergency calls dealt with by the force’s control room, which have been slammed as potentially putting lives at risk.

On another occasion a women dialled 999 to ask for police assistance to move her sofa which had become jammed in her hallway after she tried to shift it from her lounge to another room

Another example came when a woman stood outside the police station in Rhyl called the emergency line asking for a lift home after she had failed to book a taxi.

The force is now urging people to report non-urgent matters to them via the website so emergency lines can be kept clear.

Control room manager Paul Shea said: “Unfortunately, we still get too many silly calls like the one from the lady who got the couch stuck in the hall.

“Another call that sticks in the memory was the one from the lady with the spider on the bed. She was scared and wanted a police officer to come to move the spider.

“They’re just not policing matters and it takes valuable resources from people who are in real trouble.

“The flip side of that is that there are other people who should have phoned 999 who called the non-emergency line 101 instead because they didn’t want to bother us.

“I would like to stress that people should always ring 999 if they are suffering a proper emergency.”

The centre already handles an average of 80,000 emergency 999 calls a year and on average they’re answered in just 3.1 seconds.

While many people might be looking forward to the promise of Halloween, Christmas and cosy nights-in in front of the fire, the dwindling daylight hours also brings with it the threat of one specific type of nuisance.

'Twilight crime' is a term that North Wales Police have used to describe incidents - typically thefts and burglaries - committed by largely opportunistic individuals who take advantage of the long, dark hours brought about during the close of the calendar year.

The force have said that while burglaries and similar thefts are still relatively low, they tend to increase during the autumn and winter months.

Lock your doors, Plenty of lights, Visible deterrents, Report, report, report..........

NORTH Wales residents are being advised on the dangers surrounding Cryptocurrency.

A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend.

Many cryptocurrencies are de-centralised networks based on blockchain technology—a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers.

Bitcoin continues to lead the pack of cryptocurrencies in terms of market capitalization, user base, and popularity.

And whilst it may seem like a great idea to invest in it on the surface, North Wales Police has issued some guidance on why members of the public should be cautious of it.

They have issued the following steps on how to approach Cryptocurrency and how to spot if it may be too good to be true:

Be cautious of approaches presenting you with exclusive investment opportunities. It could be a scam if you’re being pressurised to act quickly.
Don’t rely on personal testimonies or celebrity endorsements, they could be fake.
Most cryptocurrencies aren’t regulated by the FCA which means they’re not protected by the UK’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It’s important that you do your research and proceed with extreme caution before making any investments.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

NEW crime data from the UK Government shows how the number of residential burglaries across England and Wales fell by 27% between March 2020 and March 2021 - the year of lockdowns.

In North Wales residential burglaries fell by 38% compared to the previous year.

The data shows there were 1,421 burglaries in North Wales during this period compared to 2,191 the previous year.

There were over 72,000 fewer domestic burglaries in England and Wales.

Regional data shows that there was a reduction in residential burglaries across every single constabulary.

“Our analysis clearly shows the dramatic impact lockdown had on the number of residential burglaries across every single region in England and Wales. There’s a clear correlation between the lockdown periods and the reduction in recorded incidents.”

“We put this down to a combination of factors. People spending more time at home has limited the usual window of opportunity for thieves to commit break-ins, while at the same time homeowners have become increasingly aware of the need to secure their homes properly.”

“Lockdowns were particularly busy for us as homeowners have had more time and money to spend on buying and installing domestic security products.

Listen to man's 999 call to check what the weather is like on Snowdon
A chipped tooth and being low on diesel were among the thousands of time waster calls to emergency services

A man who called 999 to ask what the weather was like on Snowdon has made it into a hall of shame of emergency service time wasters.

Another rang up asking for the police how to get his drunk friend home while one woman complained of chipping a tooth on a takeaway.

One man even said he'd ran out of diesel while what sounded like a child rang up just to dish out abuse.

Today, North Wales Police made the calls public as part of their ongoing #ReduceDemand campaign to help lessen the amount of unnecessary and inappropriate calls made to the joint communications centre in St Asaph ahead of one of their busiest times of year.

Superintendent Mark Williams from the Force Control Room is urging people to make sure that they use the 999-line appropriately, and only contact the non-emergency line or live web chat if it is a police matter.

Scammers have taken to WhatApp in a bid to target parents, North Wales Police are warning.

Fraudsters posing as family members have been using the social networking platform to find mothers and fathers to rinse for cash.

Police have shared a warning so people think twice and can hopefully avoid being swindled.

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "A popular scam doing the rounds at the moment is one where you will receive a message as though it has come from a family member.

"The message will read something like 'Dad I've changed my mobile number today' this will be followed by 'I'm locked out of my bank account, could you help me by paying an invoice' this will have bank details attached.

"Most of the messages are coming via Whatsapp. Please alert family and friends so that you don't get caught out."

The scam has been reported dozens of times to Action Fraud times between August and October 2021.

In one instance, a victim reported paying almost £2,000 to someone they believed was their son after they received a WhatsApp message.

The suspect claimed that they had broken their phone which is why they had a new number and that they needed a number of invoices paying.

The victim made two payments via bank transfer to the suspect, totalling almost £2,000.

“We advise all users never to share their six-digit PIN code with others, not even friends or family, and recommend that all users set up two-step verification for added security.

A POLICE boss has unveiled a plan to increase the number of drug driving tests in a campaign to improve road safety and save lives.

The crackdown is part of new strategy by North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin.

Mr Dunbobbin is also ramping up the fight against child abuse, domestic violence and cybercrime, while putting more bobbies on the beat - including 10 new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

He will reveal his plan to the North Wales Police and Crime Panel next Monday (January 31), when he will ask them to back an increase of just under 22p a week in the cost of policing the region.

The proposed 3.68 per cent increase would cost Band D householders an extra £11.25 a year.

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin has launched a new scheme investing in projects dealing with the root causes of crime across North Wales.

The Innovate to Grow Fund is looking at targeting projects across the region, especially ones offering new and innovative ideas of preventing and tackling wrongdoing.

The aim is for the initiative to complement the priorities within the Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan, as well as his Community Oriented Police Service (COPS) approach to serve all communities across North Wales.

Examples of initiatives that could be eligible for support under the scheme include those covering youth services, early intervention, and adverse childhood experiences; drug, alcohol and substance misuse services; and organisations working to combat domestic abuse, sexual violence, and violence against women and girls.

Mr Dunbobbin said: “I am hugely excited to launch the new Innovate to Grow initiative, which I believe will help to develop some of the most exciting, innovative and rewarding projects to tackle crime that are underway in the region.

"My Police and Crime Plan commits to delivering safer neighbourhoods in North Wales, to supporting victims and communities, and to ensuring a fair and effective criminal justice system for all.

“A key way of meeting these ambitions is by investing in the community-level projects across North Wales which are thinking and acting in new and innovative ways to stop crime where it starts.

"I’d encourage any organisation that thinks they fit the criteria to get in touch and apply, so that they can act with us to build on their good work and deliver the safer and more secure neighbourhoods we all wish to see.”

Mr Dunbobbin has allocated £100,000 to the new scheme to support projects for up to one year, with the main focus being on innovation. A maximum of £5,000 will be available for each project; however, should the project be delivered across two or more counties, a maximum of £10,000 will be offered.

To be eligible for funding, applicants must be not-for-profit and must complete a business plan. The plan must align to one of the Commissioner’s policing priorities. All organisations also need to ensure they have a Welsh Language, Equal Opportunities and Social Value policy in place and show how they will be integrating these areas into the delivery of the project.

THE policing precept for North Wales - part of the force's funds raised from council taxes - increased by 3.69 per cent this year, following approval by the Police and Crime Panel in January.

That means just over £11 extra per year for a Band D property, but what does that money go towards?

We met with North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin, as well as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Wayne Jones, to find out.

Mr Dunbobbin said the increase was "by far" the lowest precept level in Wales, with some forces setting theirs between 5 and 5.5 per cent.

"We are being really active in keeping it as low as it can be," he said.
"We understand the cost-of-living crisis that people are experiencing.

"As for what the public will be getting from that, we have 28 constables going onto patrol to maintain operational response levels, 11 tutor constables to develop new officers and a dedicated public contact team to broaden the range of available contact methods.

"We want to have three domestic abuse constables, two more intelligence staff to exploit front line intelligence gathering and a DI in Western CID to ensure effective management of local crime - really honing in on that local and neighbourhood policing."

North Wales? crime commissioner said he listened to the public before increasing the cost people pay for the police. Mr Andy Dunbobbin said a ?perfect storm? had pushed up the precept by 5.14%.

However he pledged to make a difference to the people of North Wales, recalling a time when his own family relied on benefits to survive. The police precept is lumped in with each annual council tax rise, which this year is costing each household 31p extra per week.

The rise follows a survey across all six North Wales counties in which residents were asked about policing in North Wales as well as selecting a range of precept increases, ranging from 19p to 35p extra a week.

North Wales Police will receive a grant of ?88.7m in 2023/24 from the UK Government with the rest coming from North Wales Police?s precept, which will bring in just over ?100.2m, amounting to a total budget of ?188.9m.

NORTH Wales Police made close to 500 drug and drink drive arrests during 2022.

NWP's roads policing unit released a video detailing the volume of work completed by the force last year.

Two worrying statistics were that 204 drink drive arrests were made and 272 drivers were arrested for being under the influence of drugs.

In addition to the drug and drink arrests, the roads policing unit revealed that they had sadly dealt with 37 fatal road traffic collisions in North Wales last year.
As a result of that, 19 specialised family liaison officers were deployed. The officer's role is to support families who have lost loved ones during accidents on the road.

A total of 127 investigations were conducted into serious road traffic collisions in the region, with the force stating that "the work doesn't stop when the road re-opens following a collision."

The roads policing unit also thanked the public for their support during the year and revealed that 266 motorists were stopped thanks to information supplied by the people of north Wales.

Other figures of note included 2,509 traffic offence reports being filed as well as officers travelling 650,000 miles during the year.

Cross border criminals travelling between North Wales and Cheshire have been targeted as part of a major police operation. North Wales Police joined forces with Cheshire Constabulary and British Transport Police to disrupt criminals using the border?s main arterial routes.

It saw more than 200 officers deployed across Flintshire, Wrexham and Chester. People took to social media after seeing the huge convoy of police vehicles in the Deeside area earlier today.

Officers patrolled and monitored railway stations across Flintshire, while earlier in the day, North Wales and Cheshire Police executed a number of warrants in the Flintshire area where a stolen motorbike, a sword, drugs and a phone were recovered. Stop checks were made on a number of vehicles suspected to be linked to criminal activity and operating on the roads illegally, with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras used to intercept vehicles known to the police.

Serious crashes across North Wales spark safety plea from police
Three bikers suffered 'potentially life-changing and life-threatening' injuries last weekend

Police are urging drivers to take care on the roads after last weekend saw a number of people critically injured in crashes. North Wales Police said they dealt with six serious crashes last weekend, four of which involved motorcyclists.

Of those four, three have injuries which are "potentially life-changing and life-threatening". Chief Inspector Caroline Mullen-Hurst, of North Wales Police?s Operational Support Service, said: ?Following yet another busy weekend we will be focussing our enforcement in an attempt to reduce any further casualties and collisions by adopting a zero-tolerance approach.

"We are committed to keeping people safe on the roads of North Wales - we want them to enjoy the roads but most of all we want them to ride and drive safely and responsibly. Whilst the vast majority of motorists ride or drive appropriately, we will continue to focus on, with a view to prosecution, all those that ride or drive dangerously, at excess speed, overtake on solid white lines or commit any other road traffic offences.

North Wales Police is encouraging the public to check their phone settings to avoid making accidental emergency calls.

?Silent 999 calls? are emergency calls where no one can be heard talking and may have been made by accident by ?pocket dialling?.

These calls can take up a lot of time for staff to contact the caller back to make sure help isn?t needed.

Chief Inspector Jon Aspinall said: ?The number of accidental 999 calls we are experiencing has increased significantly.

"I would encourage everyone to check their emergency settings on their mobile handsets and change them to prevent further accidental calls to the emergency services.

"We are working closely with mobile phone providers to resolve this situation but in the meantime, a change of your settings will ensure you are not accidentally calling 999.

Police officers in England will no longer respond to concerns about mental health if there is no risk to life or crime being committed, under new plans.

The government says the policy could save a million hours of police time every year.

Senior officers say forces have "lost their way" by dealing with less serious mental health problems.

But mental health charities say they are "deeply worried" at what could be a "dangerous" change.

At the moment, some police forces in England and Wales attend 80% of so-called health and social care incidents.

It is expected this will be reduced to between 20 and 30% within the next two years, under the plans.

The government says it is providing an extra ?1bn a year, including ?150m for facilities to replace police officers, including:

specialist mental-health ambulances               They are struggling with ambulance cover now ? !!!
extra capacity for treating patients
"crisis cafes", where people struggling to cope can drop in for help

Police must investigate every theft and follow all reasonable leads to catch offenders, the home secretary has said.

Suella Braverman said it was "completely unacceptable" that criminals are often "effectively free to break certain laws".

She wants officers to use evidence from smart doorbells and dashcams to solve more lower-level crimes.

But there are concerns the approach may take resources away from high-harm crimes such as rape and sexual assault.

Police find more drug than drink drivers on the roads of North Wales
Concerns have been raised over a lower 'stigma' attached to drug driving

Concerns the number of drug driving offences in North Wales has now overtaken drink driving were raised at a police meeting this week. Now North Wales Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin says a change in approach is needed to tackle the rise in driving under the influence of drugs.

The matter was discussed at this week?s North Wales Police and Crime Panel at Conwy ?s Bodlondeb HQ. North Wales Police Sgt Liam Ho, of the newly-formed roads crime unit, revealed 204 drink drivers had been arrested in the last 12 months.

But this was compared to 272 drug drivers who were also arrested in the same period. Sgt Ho said police had issued over two and a half thousand traffic offence reports, and that the unit?s work had resulted in 890 people being summoned to court.

Police to treat shoplifting like organised crime

Shoplifting will be targeted like organised crime as part of a plan to help police to crack down on theft.

A team of specialist analysts and officers is being put together to gather intelligence on crime gangs behind much of the shoplifting across England and Wales.

Retailers have complained police are failing to tackle rising shoplifting.

Under the plan, police have committed to attend more crime scenes and use facial recognition to target offenders.

A group of 13 retailers, including John Lewis, Tesco and the Co-op, have agreed to stump up almost ?800,000 over two years to fund a partnership, known as Project Pegasus.

The majority of the money will finance a specialist police team that will work within OPAL, the national policing division that oversees intelligence on serious organised acquisitive crime.

The Home Office said the team was being put together to "build a comprehensive intelligence picture of the organised crime gangs that fuel many shoplifting incidents across the country, to help target and dismantle them".

Officers undertake a range of activities including targeted operations, engagement and education to reassure young people they are safer not carrying knives, and to walk away from harm.

The week of action is also an opportunity for people to surrender any knives or any bladed articles that could be used as a weapon at one of the amnesty bins located at the following:

People can discard any unwanted knives at the following locations:

Llandudno Police Station

Trading standards staff seize illegal tobacco and vapes in raids across county
Council says they pose public health risk and harm legitimate businesses

Almost 3,000 illegal cigarettes and 400 illegal disposable vapes have been seized in raids in a North Wales county. The authorities found tobacco and vapes in premises in Conwy.

Conwy County Borough Council insist the haul posed a risk to public health by not having identifiable contents and harmed legitimate businesses. The three raids were carried out on Thursday.

The council said after "a number of complaints" Conwy Trading Standards officers, supported by officers from Operation Cece, Wagtail UK and Immigration Enforcement, visited and inspected three sellers' premises, and seized a quantity of "illicit products".

DRUGS were confiscated from partygoers after a sniffer dog was sent out with officers to patrol pubs.

Neighbourhood Policing Team, along with a Specialist Dog Unit, conducted licensing checks at public houses in Bangor and Bethesda.

Search-dog Juna helped officers detect the presence of drugs. A number of people are due to appear in court as a result.

A North Wales Police Gwynedd North Facebook post said on Sunday, December 17 (just after midnight): "Earlier this evening members of the Gwynedd North Neighbourhood Policing Team along with a Specialist Dog Unit conducted licensing checks at numerous public houses in the Bangor and Bethesda areas. Acting on constructive comments made by landlords in recent Pub-Watch meetings, the operation was devised to demonstrate that North Wales Police are more than willing to support our local public houses in order to deter those who believe that it is acceptable to bring prohibited substances into licensed premises.

A survey has shown that 77 per cent of people in North Wales have confidence in the way the region is policed, putting it at the top of the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

The force also achieved the second highest percentage nationally for those who agreed that the police would treat them with respect (86.5 per cent).

The figures, published by ONS, come after data which showed the force maintains the second lowest figure nationally for rates of recorded neighbourhood crime per 1,000 population.

COUNCIL TAX RISE:  North Wales Police and Crime Panel approved the lower than anticipated increase in the policing precept, suggested by PCC Andy Dunbobbin. From April, this will mean a 32p per week (or ?16.56 per year) increase in Council Tax for a Band D property.

Over half of people who participated in a survey on the precept were supportive of an annual  increase of at least ?17.50. More than 1,000 people of North Wales took part in the survey between November 27 and January 7.

Police will stop visiting schools to help with pupil behaviour after the Welsh government said it will axe the scheme.

School Beat Cymru allowed for 68 officers across Wales' four forces to deliver lessons on substance abuse, safety, safeguarding and behaviour.

But the government is to stop funding the scheme in order to save ?2m a year from April.

It said it was instead focusing on protecting frontline services.

Police commissioners have said they are unhappy at finding out so late about the cut and have promised to fund the scheme until July.

How much anti-social behaviour funding North Wales Police is getting

EVERY police force in Wales and England is being handed a share of ?66 million to ramp up patrols in areas plagued by anti-social behaviour.

The UK Government funding is expected to allow each of the 43 forces to launch uniformed patrols for up to an estimated 20,000 hours a year in so-called ?hotspot? areas where there are high levels of violence and disorder.

North Wales Police is being given ?1 million, as is neighbouring Dyfed-Powys Police, along with Gwent Police, while South Wales Police will get ?1,429,204.

The number of fines handed out to drivers in North Wales for using their mobile phones at the wheel has risen by nearly two-thirds following an update to the law, new figures show.

The AA said the tightening of the law has driven the substantial rise in offences across England and Wales, but also attributed the increased use of dashcams for helping catch drivers using their mobiles.

Home Office figures show North Wales Police handed out 455 fixed penalty notices to people for driving while using a hand-held device in 2022.

Graffiti and litter offenders must clean up in 48 hours under new rules
The Ministry of Justice said new 'rapid deployment teams' will 'swiftly deal with' antisocial behaviour

Offenders will be forced to clean vandalism within 48 hours from the point they're reported to local authorities, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has revealed. It said 'rapid deployment teams' of people serving community sentences will be made to scrub graffiti and litter-pick under plans to 'swiftly deal with' antisocial behaviour.

The rules seek to ensure that offenders 'atone for their crimes in a way that benefits the law-abiding majority' and 'allows the public to see justice being done in their own communities', according to the MoJ. A wider rollout of the scheme across Wales and England comes after a 2023 pilot in Greater Manchester, the East of England, Wales and the North East.

The public has been urged to nominate local projects for offenders to tackle within 48 hours of cases being reported to the council and passed to the Probation Service. The Conservatives and Labour have ramped up their commitments on crime ahead of this year's election, with senior Tories saying emphasis on 'bread and butter' Conservative issues will assist as Sunak seeks to reverse Labour's lead.
