Tip No.1 - Internet Explorer is utter rubbish. Use Firefox instead.

Macrium Reflect (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp)).

I'm told by Windows-owning friends that this little free prog will save you a lot of heartache. Apparently, it creates a bootable image file of your HD for those awkward moments when you pick up a Trojan, or for when the latest little irritant - a pop-up window that appears repeatedly with neither rhyme nor reason - strikes your computer.

I'd also second Dave's sage comment above: on any machine, always use Firefox or Safari or Opera or - in short - anything other than Internet Explorer.

Mind you:  Firefox does have one rather amusing shortcoming: its own spell checker doesn't recognise the word 'Firefox'...

I have been using Internet Explorer for years and years and I do not have any problems with it whatsoever.  I have tried Firefox and Safari but still prefer to stick with IE which I shall do until I have problems.     ;)

Like all other software it is constantly being updated so bugs get sorted before they even appear.  )*)&

I have found one major conflict between Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG.  They don't seem to be able to live together on the same PC.    >>>

One program I find well worth the investment is System Mechanic which keeps everything on the PC in order.   I run the whole clean up operation each week and it keeps everything running smoothly.    ;D

Can on mine.   In fact it will play in the background whilst I am working on other things.

Jas:  you need to check three things: Skype has its own sound control options under "preferences / Audio".  Secondly, check your own computer sound settings to ensure output from skype is routed through to your speakers.  Finally, you should check the sound card settings, to make sure it's recognising skype./

Thanks everybody, For the tips, I tried playing a CD  thru windows media player,  got the visuals but no sound. .  Have checked that the speakers are plugged in O K, the webcam is good , checked sound test on skype  & it shows that speakers & mic register as active. I am sure the sound settings are compat with skype as I didn't have a problem with it in Aus.  How do I check the sound card??     :-[

Go to CONTROL PANEL then SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES and check all the settings, it may be something as simple as that.     ££$

Yes I am settling  O.k , thank you Stan. The hardest part is getting used to this weather, after 22yrs in the tropics it's a bit hard, I keep telling myself it didn't bother me when I was a kid, (at least not that I remember) so I hope I will eventually be able to stick my nose out of the door, without catching cold, which is what I am suffering at the moment.   jas

Hmmm...does anything at all appear on the screen? Does the power light remain on?

Is it on battery power or mains when this happens? If it's battery try it again with it plugged in to the mains.

When a laptop is powered on it initially does a POST (Power On Self Test) each test is associated with a beep and the number of beeps shows how far through the test the laptop has got before it fails. In short are you getting any beeps when you power it on?

Already done that Trojan but it didn't help!

I tried it whilst it was on mains power and it worked. Seems a bit odd though because the battery was fully charged!

Thanks for your help folks.

Could be a problem with the power? or it could be a virus I spoke to someone yesterday and he had the same problem he switch his laptop on got to the sign in screen and it shut down. He did have a virus which he got cleaned might be worth taking it some where?

You wont find anything anywhere near as good as an ipad in that price bracket
but the A1CS 10.2 Android 2.1 Tablet PC @ £160 gets good reviews.

Yes, although I do like Google Chrome as well. I've noticed, however, that Chrome crashes very occasionally, usually when the Flash plugin starts playing up.

Re: Computer security

I use Norton for no other reason than that was part of the package when I bought our first PC in the days of "Freeserve" now Orange of course.

Currently following updates/upgrades I have Norton 360 but in the last week, warnings have kept appearing suggesting my security is at risk because I do not have "Sonar advanced protection". I have clicked on the "FIX" space and it tells me to go through a procedure that seems to involve uninstalling the present security and subsequently installing a new Norton version.

I am told that I have 115 days left before renewing my subscription and had already decided to change to possibly one of the free systems ie AVG or Avast when expiry comes.

Searching online about "Sonar advanced protection", there are sites containing complaints about the issue with one saying that he/she uninstalled and installed the new version with no improvement. There is also comment that it is not always easy to uninstall Norton if you want to end your relationship.

When I tried to login to "My Account" my password was not accepted and a new one was arranged. Initially it worked OK but today it doesn't and I can't seem to get the "forgot your password" procedure to work. I will keep trying as the sooner I can now uninstall and replace Norton with something else, the better.

Does anyone else on the Forum have Norton and if so what is your experience?

Have you had this reply from MS?

Norton 360 does not work correctly with the RC because Symantec refuses to update the program for the RC. They have stated that they will only update the program for Windows 7 once Microsoft releases the final version. In the mean time, might I suggest some freeware that works great with Windows 7 such as Avast at http://www.avast.com (http://www.avast.com)

$walesflag$ I bought a Toshiba laptop a couple of years back. It had Windows Vista loaded. I found this even worse than all the other Windows rubbish (My main computer is a Mac) so I loaded UBUNTU which I'd seen on some netbooks. This Linux operating system is brilliant and not only does it mean I have no problems with viruses, it means all the software is downloadable free using the Ubuntu Software Centre standard with the OS. Some industry standard programmes are available for Ubuntu, including my Browser, Firefox and my e mail, Thunderbird.

I'd recommend the whole package unreservedly.

I've just changed from Orange to BT Total Broadband option 1  which seems to be working faster than Orange here in Penrhyn Bay (around 1.8Mb)  One odd thing is that now if I watch Youtube on Internet Explorer the video comes through fine but the sound is distorted,(it wasn't on Orange) if I click on a Youtube link on this forum ( in I E ), then it's perfect, if I use Firefox its no problem either (which is what I will do)  It seems like BT is deliberately distorting the sound in I E, could that be the case? (I'm gradually changing over to Firefox anyway, it's remembering all the passwords

Why have loads of passwords?

I have one general password that I use for such as the Forum and programs that are of no consequence to anyone else.

I then have 3 or 4 important passwords for banking and any other secure application.

All my passwords have letters and numbers so not easily deciphered and easily remembered by me.

That seems to be the most sensible thing to do.  One good way of devising a nigh-unhackable password is to use the second line of the favourite song of your teenage years, and make the password the first letter of each word, alternating upper and lower case and insert your mother's co-op dividend number in the middle.

Some folk prefer Safari or Firefox but I still like and use Explorer.  Best thing to do is try them all and see which you prefer.  I have all three on my PC so can use whichever takes my fancy if one is acting up.

Having a bit of a frustrating time with my PC today, it keeps crashing and telling me that it needs to run start-up repairs which prove unsuccessful. One message then told me that BIOS was not compliant with ACPI (whatever that is) and I needed to contact my system vendor for a BIOS update. Another message told me to disconnect any device such as a camera or portable music player which had been attached. I had attached neither.

I managed to shut it down and thought I would sleep on it and see what happens in the morning. BUT then I thought of this thread and so would welcome comments and advice please.

Bellringer I had a quick look on the internet and these responses seem to suggest taking out the memory from the PC , giving a quick dust and putting it back in.

re: Why does it say my BIOS is not ACPI compliant?
Thanks for the help, i had also Bios not acpi compatable, so i removed ram and gave conections a wipe and brush off put back ram and every thing is fine, thanks again for ur help

But...if you do all that, S, be very careful.  RAM is notoriously sensitive to static, so before you start make sure you've earthed yourself.  Usually, touching the metal body of the computer while it's still plugged in will sort that.  Also, do not - under any circumstances - use your vacuum cleaner to give the innards a quick clean.  The movement of air across the components increases the likelihood of static discharge.  Use a feather duster instead.

Presumably your post on here was with your PC, so it is working to some degree.  The first thing I would try is a full update of your system via Microsoft update or the equivalent of your machine.   Then clear out all the rubbish by running System Mechanic if you have it or using the inbuilt program (microsoft) disc clean up and defragment.    If you can't get through them then have a look at the operating system help facility.   Microsoft explain a solution without removing any bits and pieces.

You could also try hoovering the insides - very carefully.

Most if not all was retrieved from the old one thankfully. However backup was one of those things that I kept meaning to attend to and just did not get round to. I will be now as soon as possible.

Thanks all for your comments and help.

If you are going to back up regularly may I suggest you use a seperate hard drive.  This can easily be transfered from one computer to another and can even handle back ups from more than one PC.   I have a 400 Gb hard drive that just plugs in via one of the USB ports.

I endorse that advice! I use twin External 1.5TB Hard Drives and automatically back up from one to the other every day. They easily connect to your PC via a USB port and there is a lot of free backup software that will back up from your pc to the hard drive at a set time every day.

My PC is only a couple of years old, It's an Acer M3400 with windows 7 etc.

I recently had to do a system restore after problems booting up, and for a while could only do this using the "Ram Raid" facility (whatever that is)
Since the restore to an earlier date, booting up is fine, but loading some  pages from the internet is slow, as are photos and videos on this forum,  facebook, and Youtube etc and the connection often times out. I've done disc cleanup, have got virus protection still active and have sent all my photos to an external hard drive, any suggestions?

It sounds like it could be the network connection and possibly not the pc.

Try running http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ (http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/)

Alternatively try unplugging the router for a a couple of minutes then plug it back in and reboot.

are all the drivers installed or any errors/warnings showing up?

1. Go to Device Manager, Right click on 'My Computer' select 'manage'. (Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager)
2. In the left pane look for 'Device Manager', double click on it.
3. Errors are usually shown immediately, but take a look under 'Networking', any "!" or yellow icons over any devices indicating an error?

If the above shows up then you'll need to download the appropriate drivers.

I recently changed from Norton to a "free" one and was told to make sure that I had cancelled the possibility of my subscription being renewed. To do this I contacted Norton/Symantec and advised them and ended up after about 10 mins. with a "renewal disablement number".
I shall monitor July's bank statement closely to make sure it has been disabled.

Can anyone help me with a computer problem please.
When I switch on my acer notebook computer and after a couple of minutes on the internet the computer tells me that one of my disks needs to be checked for consistency.
It is Windows XP.
It checks through and these are the things it seems to be doing,
First allocation unit is not valid. The entry will be truncated.
Non valid link.
Cross link resolved by copying.
Removing trailing folder entries.

I am absolutely hopeless on computers if anything goes wrong. Can anyhting be done to stop this?
Thank you.

Try entering   chkdsk /f   into the command prompt. You will get a message saying this cannot be done now but it will do it next time you reboot. Reboot the computer and it will run a checkdisk hopefully fixing any problems it finds.

The problem is it does the disk check and the reboot of its own accord almost every time I switch the computer on.
It says I can press any key to stop it but strongly advises me not to do so.

It's the /F that fixes the problems. Is it possible to go into safe move by keep pressing F8 during the booting up processing. Once in Safe mode you should be able to do the Chkdsk f.

If your hard drive is the C drive then try this by clicking START then RUN and enter:

Thanks both for your help.
I have tried both ways.
The one with the f it said it couldn't find.
The one with the r said this,
File type is Fat32
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts Y/N

I didn't answer!
The file system is C.
I do not have an external drive.
If it is possible to help further I would be very grateful.
Thanks.

I would not expect FAT32 file system on XP it should be NFTS.

What size is the hard drive as FAT32 only works up to 32GB?

It does say Fat 32.
The disk drive C says: free space 1.11gb and total 7.40gb

Is the hard drive split into 2 partitions......... C for the operating system and D for storage?

If yes........back up the D drive onto external media for safety and restore the operating system via the recovery partition or those recovery discs you made as instructed when you bought the machine!!

I suggest you look at forums related to Acer machines for indepth info on your particular model of notebook incase it has some funny little quirks ££$

That's a very small Hard Disk, H!

I think you maybe have a bad sector on the hard disk. My recommendation would be to get the hard drive replaced with a new (and much larger!) one if you are otherwise happy with the performance of your laptop.

I think I may have caused some confusion by calling it a notebook. It is a netbook.
It is a very small thing that I just use for my travels. I have a proper size laptop  for home use.
Is that the reason maybe that it is a small disk?

And - naturally - we're working on the new Three Towns Forum app, especially for members.

  WWW WWW WWW

For quite some time I couldn't really see why anyone would want a tablet - iPad or any variety - then I saw, yesterday, that they're increasingly being used as remote controls for all the household tech equipment, and they've been finding niches in special schools, where they're apparently producing astonishing results with autistic children.

If you're going to get a tablet, I doubt you'll do better than the iPad.

Anything beginning with an i.......i pad, i pod, i phone etc fills me with fear and trepidation!
I stood in the apple shop in Liverpool recently in awe of all those minuscule gadgets but will I ever know how to work them?
I hope so one day!

Husband has found that my troublesome netbook has an 8GB removable drive that I knew nothing about so maybe some things can go on there?

It shouldn't.  Apple's well-deserved success and meteoric rise is largely attributed to how easy they make it to operate their equipment. And I gather the iPad is the easiest yet.  Also, if you're ever in an Apple store again, don't forget they're more then happy for you to use their stuff to check your emails and browse the forum - a bit like a free internet cafe service :-))

Over the past couple of days, my notebook shows this message on a grey background:

The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified. It may not be completely inserted or may have some other problem.

Please read and complete the following steps in order;

1)   Press the device completely and firmly into the bay.

2)   Power off the system

3)   Press the power buttons to retry deleting the device

Press ESC to ignore error and continue.

Needless to say I always press ESC to continue but I still keep getting the message every time I switch on my notebook.

Sadly, it is gobbledygook to me !!

Help.  :rage:

Your problem is your CD/DVD drive. The modular bay is where the CD/DVD drive is inserted, either completely remove your CD/DVD drive and the computer should boot up fine or if you want the drive, then try reinserting it a few times

I have control of a Acer netbook with Windows 7(daughter's) and  it has a 250GB hard drive which is partitioned with the operating system in 1 partition and storage in the other.

As XP Home is about 7.7 GB on a hard drive I assume your harddrive is partitioned the same. Try and restore the operating system before wasting money on a new harddrive but BACK UP everything else before you do this........ .in case it does fail.

If you try and put the same operating system on a new harddisk and it is the operating system that is failing(unlikely) you will be no better off.

Could someone please tell me how to get in and out of full screen mode in Internet Explorer?  (I realise , of course, that if I were not an IE user I might be able to work it out for myself!!).  To be honest, it's the getting out bit that I'm more interested in - one of my cats does the getting in bit by treading on the keyboard but I don't know which keys he presses and he won't tell me!

Just an aside, as I've found the answer to this one, do you know how to rotate everything on the screen through 90, 180 or 270 degrees?  My cat taught me this trick and now I'm waiting for an opportunity to show off my incredible computing skills - there must be a use for it somewhere!

All depends on which version of IE you are using. You could try this:

Go to 'View' menu
Then click on 'Toolbars' and an additional section appears to the right.
Make sure that both 'Menu Bar' and 'Lock the Toolbars' are ticked'

I use a website called bit.ly or stwnsh.com to shorten a web address into the web address you see on the forum.
A web address like this http://www.pathodkinson.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/etching_Llandudno-625x317.jpg (http://www.pathodkinson.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/etching_Llandudno-625x317.jpg) becomes http://bit.ly/r2BmlH (http://bit.ly/r2BmlH)
It looks tidier when posted. There is also a bit.ly app for the google chrome browser that does the job as well.

My PC was laking a long time to load up Firefox, Chrome, etc and then when they had loaded up were flickering. I attempted a systemrestore which has worked for me in the past but all I get is a window headed Install Windows with the message Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration restart the computer. When I attempt to do this the message disappears and instead of rebooting  I get Setup is Starting Services with a fuzzy line underneath it - but nothing happens. I have tried running from safe mode and various cmds from the cmd prompt but  it appears that the system restore has been de activated . I don't have any discs with which to reinstall Windows. Any ideas as to what I can do next? I have sent off for some Windows restore discs but up to now they haven'tarrived. my netbook is fine for use of the internet but I really need my PC and Printer for other stuff

Could be a hardware failure, rather than software. When you say flickering, was it just Chrome and Firefox that were flickering or was it doing it on the Windows desktop as well?

Have you checked that all cables are plugged in properly, and cable connections in any mains plugs are secure?    Also check connections to any peripherals such as monitor, modem, router, printer, scanner etc.   It can also help if the inside of the computer case is hoovered out occasionally as one can get an accumulation of dust and muck.   If it still don't work after a good old check over then Dave is probably right.

One thing I forgot to mention.   Funny things have been going on in the Penrhryn Bay area over the last couple of days.  Very slow loading of Google, Firefox and Safari.  Also page loads very slow or not obtainable, when one did get a half reasonable connection.  It seems OK today (so far).

When you try to boot up next time have all peripherals switched off if possible.

Apple and the like have, over the years, introduced all sorts of things in an attempt to stop people using their songs without paying for them,  I am not sure, but it may be that it is inbuilt software to stop any itunes you have purchased for that particular device being copied to third party devices.  I may be wrong, anyway, good luck, keep twiddling the knobs!

Actually, Apple allow people to use their music in more ways than other manufacturers, and even offer downloads which are completely unprotected.  Any MP3 file is simply data which can be transferred between any two devices using bluetooth, USB or through copying and pasting.  I don't know how the iPad operates in this respect, but it ought to be fairly simple and Dusty's solution is certainly one way round things.

Microsoft Security Essentials available as a free download is very good as it updates and will scan automatically and can be tailored to your own needs.  Obviously works well and is compatible with all MS stuff.  AVG as a FREE download  is not foolproof!

Most, if not all of these free anti-virus software's are okay, but for full protection I would always recommend getting a comprehensive protection package which will have additional security over and above the anti-virus.  Over the years I have used most of the free applications, and in all cases, I have had problems, for the last three years I have used Norton 360 All in One Security, it's been fantastic, warms me of possible problems.  If you shop around you can get it for around £30, but you need to buy annually.  At the end of the day, it will cost far more to have your infected computer sorted out, I speak from experience.  You get what you pay for.

Apple won't support Flash on any of its mobile devices, with good reason.  In fact, Adobe is discontinuing flash on all mobiles (http://www.forbes.com/sites/mobiledia/2011/11/10/adobe-discontinues-flash-on-mobile-devices/), anyway, as HTML5 is far better suited to animations, so you'll find plenty of alternative apps to play videos.

So I had a nice new bit of "must have" tech. So I made a New Year resolution, no more scraps of paper, all my passwords, phone numbers, addresses will go straight on to the "notes" app and be kept nice and tidy. As at yesterday I had around 25 entries, lovely.
Went this morning to get a phone number. With the exception of my very first page I made around last November, everything else had vanished, presumably deleted.
I tried a sync with the mother computer, no luck.
So, what the h--- has happened? There is. A delete button, but I suppose you would have to press it 20 times to delete 20 pages. And in any case, why is the original one still there?
Anyone got any ideas? I've tried reading up on iPad for dummies etc etc but no joy.   Mike

I don't have an iPad yet but wondered if there is a "RESTORE POINT" that you can go to as one can on most PC's these days?

Good luck!    ££$

Your problem sounds a bit like this chap from another forum:

I was on a 3 week vacation and took a lot of notes during that time.  When I got back, I wanted to e-mail them to myself.  When I brought up the Notes app all my notes (about 15 of them with a lot of details in each) had disappeared.  When I called Apple Support they said I should have backed them up regularly and that the iPad is not a storage device (good to know!)  Obviously, I don't take my desktop with me on vacation to be able to use iTunes to back my iPad up daily, right after I create my note, so I am not caught by this surprise.  Of course, I can e-mail it to myself as a backup as soon as I create the note.  But that assumes I have Wi-Fi access available wherever I go on vacation.  So unless anyone has any ideas on this, I have just lost a lot of detailed information that I was going to use to write a travel blog.  How does something just disappear from a device without it being deleted or without a serious failure of the component that persists it?
Very disappointed with the iPad and Apple, especially considering how jaded everyone is with this company and its products.  From that statement you may realize that I am a new Apple product user and not as enamored.

I don't think the Notes app is secured, Mike, so you shouldn't be using to store anything like passwords anyway!

I use Google Docs, which is password protected and saved immediately every time you make a change:

Thanks Yorkie and DaveR. The security aspect never even crossed my mind. I just thought that as long as I don't loose my iPad all is safe. silly me.  I will start studying google docs straight away.
Do you know, and I say this in all seriousness , I needed 3 months away by myself to try and read up on iPads, kindles, laptops etc to try and get a grip on the situation. Mike

There's an App called 'tips & tricks - ipad secrets' which may help you learn
some things about the iPad that you are maybe unaware of. They do one
for the iPhone too which I found quite helpful. You'll probably know some
of the tips but I'm pretty sure there will be some you don't. Try the free
Lite version first & if you find it helpful there's a paid version with even
more tips if you wish to upgrade.

I had a Spectrum too and got hooked to a game called Jet Set Willy. You were a spaceman going through different game levels collecting pieces & I spent many hours trying to complete it only to find out it was impossible to collect the last piece! I lost interest in computer games after that until Nintendo brought out the NES with the Super Mario game.

As a change from hacking---Ive just had a inexplicable (to me at any rate) happening.  I connected up my usual laptop to my usual printer. Had both of them for around three years, but I hadnt used the printer for around six months.
Everything fine, go to the printer settings, the panel comes up and --- all there as usual but all the words are in German.
Tried it two or three times, no change. All german.  It was English when I last used it.
My mind boggles.   Mike  P.S. Its an Epson, Japanese I think.

From time to time I receive attachments with emails which I cannot open. A window comes up saying -

"This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association's control panel".

Can someone interpret this for me please and guide me as to what I should do.

Up till now I have forwarded the message with its attachment to my gmail address and opened the attachment without difficulty. However I would like to avoid having to do this if possible.

Hi, Bellringer.
This normally means that you have not got the program which created the attachment installed on your pc & you need to either install that program or a program compatible with the attachment file type, or let the pc know of a compatible program for that file type.
If you post the file extension (the letters after the " . "   - normally 3 eg: image.jpg -  jpg is the extension). I will let you know of a compatible program.

Right click on the file, and then choose Open With, then, select Windows Mail , then you should be able to see the file opened in Windows Mail.
Let me know if this works.
The attachment was created in Outlook express - which is now outdated.

Hi,
Make sure pc is turned off, & use a pair of long nosed pliers to pull out the broken bit, dont worry, as long as there is no power to your pc, you will not damage it.
If you cant do this, then it depends on how much you know about pcs & bios settings
whether or not I can help you online.

I have successfully removed something in a similar situation by carefully using superglue to attach a cocktail stick to the broken piece and then pulling it out.  The cocktail stick needs the point removing to give a larger glued surface.  Just be careful to be sparing with the glue and don't glue the lot together.

Good idea from Yorkie.  But as said, be sparing on the amount of glue.
If you cannot remove the broken bit, my next thought would to be:
Buy a new soundcard for the pc, & either exchange the current one, or turn off the onboard one in the bios. - - Either way is quite easy, depending on how confident you are with pc hardware.

Nemesis, I was hoping to do it myself so there would be no charge. I'm a bit skint!

Yorkie, Please tell me you just made that up so that anyone who Googles "superglue" or "cocktail stick" will be directed to the forum. I'm definitely going to give it a try though.

Rob, I am not too confident about opening the lappy up and I don't know what a "bios" is. Computers are like cars to me. I'm reasonably adept at operating them but everything that goes on under the bonnet is witchcraft as far as I'm concerned!

A friend who is a bit more computer savvy than I has suggested just leaving it in there and getting some USB speakers but will they work while the lappy thinks headphones are connected?

I just presumed it was a pc, not a lappy. I should have read your post properly $smack$

The best way to sort it out is to try to remove the broken bit. The sound card cannot be removed.
Alternatively as your friend has suggested, get some usb speakers - yes they should work. You may have to change your default playback device in the sound options in start\control panel, to your usb speakers if they are not automatically used.

Has this shop changed hands? You say he is helpful, but,if its the same shop, a couple of years ago it had a large sign inside saying words to the effect "We are not here to give free advice to anyone who comes in. Please go and ask elsewhere." These are not the exact words, but I read it. As I was prepared to pay for work done for me I wasent put off, but I didnt find it particularly inviting. Lots of people need to ask questions in a computer shop to helpthem make  a decision whether to spend their cash or not.  To make it worse the owners had two matching BMWs parked outside.

I had bought one of these camera's for about £20 on e-bay, and like you I had the problem of upside down video, however the first camera was returned because of a fault, I them purchased one from another seller, and this has the inbuilt facility to flip the display/video.  All of that said, in my case the camera is there to monitor the road ahead so the only time I would need to show the video would be if someone caused an accident and the footage was needed to show what had happened, so the orientation would not be of concern.  I find that it gives piece of mind, especially as all of the accidents I have been involved in over the years, have all resulted from other people basing into me.

Meanwhile, if you post any queries in here, I'll certainly do my best to help.  The OS download might not help that much, actually, as it's more down to which version of the OS you're using.    Thank you Ian. There are a lot of kind people on this forum.

But before I enlist anybodies help I must stress that it was my decision to bring myself problems. I knew very little about Macs but always had a fancy for one but lacked the courage, and, most importantly time, to get involved. Now, for the next two or three months and for the first time for very many years, Ive got the time.
So, I decided to buy a second hand recon bread and butter Mac, mess around with it, hopefully learn about it, and then, should the time come in the future and I had a few bob in my pocket ---- well then I would know what I was looking for.  In past years I have always been a fool rushing in with anything, cars etc and business ideas, but at long last I might have got a bit of sense.
I wont at this stage worry you with the details, Its a 13 inch model around 3 and a half years old, cost just over £300 and has Mountain Lion on it --- or should I say half way on it.  The dealer I bought it from did say that it was wiped clean of everything.
Ive also bought a couple of "dummies" books on my Kindle. I must say, slightly changing the subject, I love my Kindle for reading books whilst on holiday, but I dont find them the best for reference like I need now. Its far easier and quicker to skip to the page which you can find easier and quicker as well.
I will carry on, and when I get stuck I will take you up on your kind offer.  Mike

Thanks, Dave, I did not think much of it when it was suggested to me, which is why I asked the question.

I am now looking for an Ap for my iPad which will give me real time information on the UK Stock Market without me having to trade through them.  All I can seem to find are US based.  Thought u might be able to point me in the right direction.

I use the ADVFN app, think there is a delay but probably you won't get real time prices for free.

Would probably be useful if you had several Twitter accounts to manage, but not a lot of use for Joe Public.

Why would anyone want more than one Twitter account?

Quite frankly I have yet to understand Twitter, it seems to be just a load of disjointed messages interspersed with signs and symbols which mean nothing.  I'd rather read a good text book on higher calculus.

It looks good but maybe a bit too sophisticated for my purpose.   As I am only a rank amateur investor and someone who cannot be measured against the Bulls and the Bears of Paternoster Square I think the easier the system I use the better for me.  Some of the apps available are just crammed with information and statistics that I don't want or need.  I only wish to watch the movement, particularly on the days that results are announced, as there can be dramatic changes in a few minutes when one can capitalise on any opportunity to make a swift profit.

....which is why I can't fault ADVFN.

I trade several shares regularly, (a little too regularly) and ADVFN has graphs and charts that react instantly to any news or market moves.   By the minute, hour, month and year.
It is addictive to anyone who needs instantaneous price updates.

Query ? What is the significance of the hash ( # ) symbol being placed before certain words / names ?
Title: Re: Help wanted: Computers
Post by: martin on January 26, 2013, 03:29:26 pm
I have just read this, and I am not at all sure I fully understand, best keep off Twitter I say.

What Are Hashtags ("#" Symbols)?
Definition: The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.
Using hashtags to categorize Tweets by keyword:

People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.
Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.
Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.
Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.
Example: In the Tweet below, @eddie included the hashtag #FF. Users created this as shorthand for "Follow Friday," a weekly tradition where users recommend people that others should follow on Twitter. You'll see this on Fridays.

Don't blame you!  I find both Twitter and Facebook most peculiar and much of it complete nonsense.  Everyone seems to be talking to themselves or making inane remarks or agreeing with others.  At the worst they "like" all sorts of things.  Everything is punctuated with ########'s and @@@@@@@'s.

Most swear words are in the Oxford English Dictionary; however, we don't want language like that on the Forum where children can see it. As for being in common usage, I don't know about that? Personally, I cant think of any friends of mine that use that particular term.

When you need to type an offensive word you should leave out at least one letter and replace it with something like an asterisk.
What you don't do is type the full word and then stick a dash in there, pointless really.
If you need to know what tw*t means, Google it and you might be surprised because some people including myself find the use of it way over the top and I class myself as very broadminded.

First you may recall I actually used the word against myself.  If I have offended anyone ( as I obviously have) I am sorry.  At the time of writing I was making certain amount of play on the word Twitter.   I will not mention the word again, at least not on this Forum.

When you need to type an offensive word you should leave out at least one letter and replace it with something like an asterisk.

Do you believe that by the insertion of an asterisk no one will know what you mean?   If so there is absolutely no point in putting the naughty word in the first place, even though an attempt has been made to disguise it!

What you don't do is type the full word and then stick a dash in there, pointless really.

Same applies to an asterisk in my book, but then I could be wrong!

If you need to know what tw*t means, Google it and you might be surprised because some people including myself find the use of it way over the top and I class myself as very broadminded.

So Google is now the be all and end all of producing accurate definitions?   Not in my book!

In a proper dictionary the objectionable word has TWO DISTINCT meanings viz:

Definition of t**t     (you know what I mean)
noun
1 vulgar slang a woman’s genitals.
2 a person regarded as stupid or obnoxious.

Google has many other obviously contrived definitions.  I was using the term in its second meaning, i.e. regarding myself as stupid!  I hope now that my critics may take another look at the matter and should they feel it necessary to offer an apology.  Most unlikely that such will happen.

Please keep the debate going.

Perhaps I should have used twyllo!

Yorkie, the point I was making was that you aren't covering anything up at all if you type the word and just place a dash in there, the whole word is there.
The idea is to be a little subtle and a dash is not subtle.
The idea is that you disguise the word a little but it is still recognisable but less likely to offend.
The newspapers do it all the time.
The reason I quoted Google was that it saves you moving away from your keyboard to get the dictionary and Google being Google, it is pretty accurate.
You wrote the word and I don't see why you should expect an apology from anbody.
I've known what the word means since I was a lad and despite any modern interpretations I would not dream of writing it in a public domain that is available to younger family members.

Twitter were very quick about it once the complaint was made.  I didn't actually do anything, being a believer in " no publicity is bad publicity".  The mistake they made was against another person who, apart from anything else, is not pleasant to deal with.  I do believe that the name of the individual is known and there may be further, more unpleasant, repercussions.  We shall have to see if something new crops up!     :D

I run a program called System Mechanic which I have had on the PC and laptops for a few years now.  It is a subscription item but for the annual fee you get all the latest updates and a program that really does give your PC a good clean out and clear-up.   It can be set to run automatically at chosen times or one can manually start it and choose which tools one wishes to use, all of them for a Spring clean or just one or two for a quick fix.  Never had a problem with it and it does what it says on the tin.

Available from Iolo Technologies.   D)

If you have a pc which is already slow, then one of the last things you want to do is install more programs to run in the background while your pc is on.
I would recommend CCleaner which is at the top of the list on DaveR's posted link.
I have used it for a number of years for a final clean up on pcs after virus removal.
It is an on demand program, so only runs when you start it up.

It cleans all the temp files etc from your pc.
It has a registry cleaner, which I have never known to find/delete any 'needed' entries, it also has a startup section to manually stop un-needed programs from running on startup.
It can also perform a few more tasks if needed.

The best bit is - - it's free!!!!

I have used the CC Cleaner for years when it used to be called C--P Cleaner. It is easy to use, free and works well but just one problem I had is worth noting.
It is only if you have Sky Go on your computer. The CC cleaner will wipe out the pin unless you uncheck the Microsoft Silverlight box in the CC Cleaner Applications tab.
Sky will only let you make one change for month so if it is wiped out at the beginning of the month you will lose the service for the rest of that month.
I did uncheck the Microsoft Silverlight box though and after that all was fine and the pin hasn't been lost since.

C Cleaner scan complete, but as Hollins alluded to, it WILL DELETE all your saved user names and passwords on any website that you have asked it to be saved.
That included all my suppliers websites, share dealing, online banking.... the lost!

It will be a devil of a job to re-establish them all.  :(

Fester:  you know they're all saved in your cookies file? All you'd have to do would be to back that file up before using CCleaner.   On the other hand , if you had a Mac, it would do that anyway, and store everything in Keychain...

I switched on my computer this morning to find a load of "failure to deliver" messages from Miller Daemon @yahoo in my Inbox and also some replies to messages from people I had never sent messages to, but are in my contacts. All the failure notices are timed at around 0531 onwards  this morning and the replies are mostly auto-generated. There does not seem to be any pattern to the addressees but it is a bit awkward as I don't know what the message(s) are that I am supposed to have sent! I have also just  received a message from McAfee Security saying that a "Trojan" has been removed from my computer and that no further action is required. What is the procedure to find out the cause of this, and do I need to notify all my contacts about this problem?

I had something similar where yahoo seemed to be sending mail messages from my account to a selection of people in my contacts list. Not all contacts for some reason. I researched in on the web and the main advice given was to change your yahoo mail password. whatever malware that's on there may have remembered your password and shouldn't be able to do anything if you change it. Also worth running a full virus check and if possible download and run  the free version of something like "Spybot search and destroy" to check for malware.

This is the fault of BT, their security is poor and allows hackers in to spread the virusses.
Send an e mail en bloc to all of your contacts telling them what has happened.
Change your password as soon as possible.
The message they would have received contains a link, which if clicked on will destroy their hard drive. DO IT NOW.

Hi, Gwynant
It sounds like your Yahoo account has been hacked.
If you access your mail online using your browser (internet Explorer, etc) Normally, just changing your Yahoo password will sort this out.

But if you are using an email client, eg. Windows Mail, You should scan your computer with a program like Mbam, Superantispyware or S&D as themedz recommended.

These programs are free & scan for & remove most malware. - Personally, I use Mbam (malwarebytes anti malware). If you use this program, when you install it, untick/tick the trial box so that you are NOT using the trial version.

The emails that have been sent will prob only be advertisments, so any recipients should not have any problems with them.
Saying this though, you should send them an email to warn them not to click on any links contained in them as a precaution.

Rob

Title: Apple Macs: Mavericks
Post by: Ian on December 29, 2013, 09:49:50 am
There’s no doubt that Mavericks will be welcomed by many. It certainly seems more responsive, has a lot of nice features and will be useful for laptop owners in terms of extending battery life, although screen fonts have become smaller, and little indicators showing downloading and other progressive activities have become even harder to find.. However, long-time Mac users, who’ve been using Macs since the very earliest days, will be aware that Apple has a mixed record in bringing out OS updates. Generally, the rule is to wait before installing until the first big update to the main update has appeared.

Unfortunately, in this case, it wasn’t enough.  The bug - and it’s a significant bug - will not affect you unless you use external discs with Firewire 400, 800 or - even more worryingly - Thunderbolt. The bug effectively stops these discs from sleeping, so that they remain spinning the entire time the computer is on.

Not unsurprisingly, there’s a lot about this bug in the Apple support forums and in the MacRumour forums, but this isn’t the first time Apple has done this.  Some years ago a major OS update actually stopped all Firewire 400 ports from working at all. This was rectified in the next significant update, but that bug probably didn’t affect as many users, since Thunderbolt is another Apple technology (exactly as Firewire is) which Apple is pushing hard. However, if you do use discs for purposes such as Backup or media serving - a natural Apple function, you might think - then be very careful about installing Mavericks and even consider reverting to Mountain Lion.

I was wondering why my external hard drives kept merrily spinning away even when the Mac was sleeping. Is there a solution in sight, Ian?

I switched on my laptop this morning to find an e-mail from "e-billing @bt.com" advising me that they had detected a slight error in my billing information, and requesting that I confirm my payment details by clicking on to a link to verify all my details are correct, otherwise I would have difficulty accessing my account within the next 48 hours.
As I pay by direct debit and they wanted to know my Credit Card details I smelt a rat but the site was exactly like the official BT Site, except for the "Dear Valued Customer" and spelling "register" as "registre", and the e-mail had come past the Spam site onto my e-mnails. While I was on this site Macafee Security suddenly flagged up a warning that it was a potentially dangerous site and a page full of of Russian/Eastern European writing appeared so I vacated it immediately. I have contacted BT by phone in India and a very polite and efficient gentleman checked that all  was well with my account and told me to change my Password (for the second time in 2 weeks as some unauthorised e-mails were sent randomly to some of my contacts last week without my knowledge), and forward the e-mail to "abuse @bt.com", which I have done. Have any other Forum members received any similar messages from BT Yahoo recently?

Title: A computer pop up from BT
Post by: Michael on February 24, 2014, 07:39:43 pm
There are a few computer wizz kids on the forum, so how about this.

A few weeks ago a large pop up, takes up most of the screen, comes up. It's from BT, that's right, BT, and it appears at anything up to a max of every two minutes.  It wants me to use BT fon for wi-fi when I am home or out and about.

Now I did use BT for wi fi a few years ago, it was'ent fon then, it was a different name. However I haven't used it for years.

So I try to enter the site. But no, won't accept what I thought was my user and password. So I try to be reminded of them.

O k they say, we will email new ones.  Only trouble is they are using a four year old email address to send their reply, and I cancelled that address years ago.

So I cannot read it.  I write to BT, tell them the position and explain that my PC is virtually unusable because of 2 minute interruptions.

Their reply, in my language.  "Hard luck, you had better get on to your service provider on your landline (I use Primus) and ask THEM for your password"

Several messages to Primus but I am just getting nowhere, they are just giving me advice as to how to stop pop ups in the future.

But today, horray, they say they can help, but they need me to contact their specialist department because they need intricate and various detailsfromme.

I phone up and a recorded voice says "before we connect you be advised that calls to this number wil be charged at 25 pence a minute.
Obviously going to be a long call and why the hel should have to pay it?

   Any comments from anyone.  Mike

P.s. In the meantime my iPad is being worked to death ha ha

Sounds like the wi-fi on your computer is looking for the nearest available wi-fi point and is finding the BT FON spots. If you want to stop it, set the wi-fi to ignore all connections except your usual one.

Hope you read my advice in Stop press about ipads...

Well. in the sense that very little is really original in the true sense of the word, there's something in what you say. But plagiarism and stealing are crimes, and although the complete copying of something someone else has thought of might not seem to be wrong, it ultimately costs jobs and destroys companies. Dave wouldn't be very happy if someone were to publish a book using his photos. That's what Samsung has been doing, as court after court rules in Apple's favour.

There is a difference twixt copyright and innovation.  It is said that the movies was "invented" simultaneously by different people in different countries, and development in the modern World is moving so fast, that similar  technological advances are being made all the time.  Just depends on who gets the World Wide Patent first.  Even then a subtle change to one small detail can negate any legal claim.

This is a cheap imitation copy received just two days after the airing of a BBC documentary following trading standards where people's houses were nearly burned down by such items. This is not something that is a rip off and makes no effort to disguise the fact, this is a completely fake product with the exact same design and copied part numbers, CE logo etc from the genuine article."

There are numerous other reviews about cheap chargers for iPod, iPads and Laptops. And it isn't a generalisation to say "Third party chargers have a history of exploding."  It is fact.  Your chargers might not have exploded - yet. If you want to take the chance, that's up to you. People and animals put one leg in front of the other and "walked" creating pathways and roads, along which they moved from one place to another.  Goods and chattels were carried on the backs of animals.  When they found that the wheel would not fit on the animals they invented the wheelbarrow!  And so it continued ad infinitum.

I think it is fair to say that all manufacturers copy each other, in one way or another.

Well. in the sense that very little is really original in the true sense of the word, there's something in what you say. But plagiarism and stealing are crimes, and although the complete copying of something someone else has thought of might not seem to be wrong, it ultimately costs jobs and destroys companies.

When I was working as a textile designer in a British factory we struggled with the effects of copying as many of our competitors did not employ a designer. I was sent once to a seminar on copyright and the advice given there was to make sure you got more out of copying others than they did copying you. In other words there's not a lot you can do about it.

My genuine iphone charger cost me £20, and fell apart within months, (split casing, frayed wires) but it still works well as I taped it up.

I bought a cheap iphone charger, (not a copy, doesn't pretend to be Apple), for only £2 from Ebay.   It hasn't exploded 'yet', but it takes a lot longer to charge the phone up.

It came from HK, and the shipping charge was NIL!   Incredible.

Dave R, you had an iphone charger explode did you not, I recall?    Was it a genuine Apple one?

The Charger that exploded certainly did look like a genuine Apple one and had all the appropriate markings etc but who can really say? Some forgeries are very cleverly done.

I know about using the ?123 to get all the signs and symbols, but I would prefer some of these items on the normal keyboard.  Some applications do have such signs and symbols on the keyboard they provide, so there must be one somewhere.  I'll have a look through a few more options and see if I can find one that suits me better.
Thanks anyway.

BT sent emails getting everyone to change their log in details a few weeks back. If you have IMAP, then you do have to make some changes.

On Gmail, however, I've never warmed to it. Partly, I suspect, because you get what you pay for, to some extent.  I think the best option is to get your own domain.  Only costs a very small amount and it works perfectly in my experience.

At long last I decided to get rid of my old Tower PC and so I've invested in a new laptop running Windows 8.  What a difference in the way it is used from XP and the old Windows systems!  At times I wish there was a class one could go to immediately after purchase, to learn the intricacies of the piece of equipment.

I'm gradually working through it and hope to be an expert in a few years time.   Anyone else had  the joys of Windows 8?    :D

Hi,  Yorkie asked if anyone had had the joys? of windows 8. Well, I have and I must say there are some good guides on youtube
to introduce you to the system. However I must confess I simply press the windows key and D to go straight to desktop where I have set things up like the older windows systems. There are lots of other shortcuts to learn.
My laptop is still windows 8 in that despite repeated offers to free upgrade....I haven't  done anything yet. Even worse there is now not only
the first update to windows 8.1 but there is even a very recent update to that....called 8.1 update.Reviews on these updates are mixed . Has anyone done either update yet? Was it straightforward? etc etc.

Thanks Rhuddlan for the advice.  I have discovered that one can use it in a manner with a straightforward menu and am gradually getting more used to it.
Being a bit stupid maybe, and without thinking, I have updated to 8.1 but so far have not experienced any changes.  But, then again, I've only had it a few hours!
The update was straightforward but did take a bit of time.  The whole process was seamless so I just let it take care of it in its own time.

Transferring data from my old PC  is going to be the major task, unless I discover the short cuts.    :D

That's a good idea!  I have a 400 gig external on which I keep all my music and other stuff, including my back up files for the PC.  Connect that and move the stuff over as and when I feel in the mood.  It would be a shame though, not to use the 1 TB that the laptop has built in so it would only be a temporary fixture.
As I will be dumping the old PC I can use the external to back up the laptop as and when.   ZXZ

Problem solved.  Somehow or other I had managed to set the Google Chrome Screen to "High Contrast" and this was transferring to all that I opened from the Google Page.   The Contrast Button (which I never knew existed) is on the top right of the screen and is a black and white ball.  Click on this and then set contrast as you wish.   I'm leaving mine on Normal now as the default setting!

CHRISTMAS will come early for residents and businesses in Llandudno and Abergele this year, with the arrival of superfast broadband.

BT confirmed to MP Guto Bebb and Clwyd West AM Darren Millar this week that fast fibre-optic broadband will be activated in both towns’ exchanges by December, giving properties in the area internet speeds up to three times faster than the UK average.

Mr Millar said: “This is tremendous news.

“More than ever, high speed communications are crucial in the fast-moving and changing world that we work and live in so I look forward to the benefits this improved broadband will bring to my constituents."

It is part of Superfast Cymru’s rollout of fast fibre-optic broadband to 96 per cent of premises in Wales by 2016 - a target set by the Welsh Government.

Erw Fawr, a street in Henryd in the Conwy Valley, hit the headlines in April when comparison website uSwitch announced it had the slowest download speeds in the UK, at 0.6mbps.

Senior Conwy Councils were told by top BT staff in June that the rollout of superfast broadband across the county is underway, with Kinmel Bay and the Conwy Valley the first to benefit.

It's only two exchanges, however;  Llanrwst isn't on the list, so it's not all the Conwy Valley by a long shot. Neither, strangely, are Rhos or Colwyn Bay. Those designated are Llandudno and Aberconwy. Along the coast, Abergele, Rhuddlan and Dyserth are also in the plan.

Hmmm... Blaenau FF and Corwen are already enabled. So much for us 'being the first to benefit'...

Ah;  the iPad allows much better font enlargement than a laptop. Owing to its superior resolution, a mere finger and thumb allow the user to enlarge the entire screen and content.

As Shakespeare said, "But there lies the rub!"  Or similar words!

Adjusting the font is easy enough but one then sacrifices the total visible area of the document, including illustrations, and this then involves a lot of finger work to look at all parts of the page.  The enlargement facility of the ipad is great but, I think, only for certain uses.

Is it time to dispose of it or can it be repaired at reasonable cost?

Any assistance/suggestions would be much appreciated.

I thought I should post this warning here just in case there is someone out there receiving daily requests from Microsoft to update to Windows 10.
My poor mum had just been duped in this way.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36367221 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36367221)

I told her to click the red cross at the top right of the box to dismiss the persistent requests.
She did this but as you can see in the BBC article this one was particularly tricky.
The result was that her elderly computer just did not have the space for such a huge download and all but packed up.
I googled how to change back from Windows 10 to 7 and this is possible if you do it up to one month of changing.

http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/ (http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/)

I was away in Anglesey when this happened so my niece went to do this for my mum and fortunately it worked. Her computer is back to normal.

We rely on the email for communicating especially when I am away and the powers that be at Microsoft can have no idea of the worry and trouble that their dishonest methods caused.

Title: Re: Help wanted: Computers
Post by: Hugo on May 28, 2016, 06:58:19 pm
That same thing happened to me Hollins,  I kept deleting all the requests from Microsoft to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and then they said that I had been scheduled for an upgrade on a Thursday and I declined that offer too.
Anyway at about 11.00pm on the Thursday when I switched the computer on it immediately crashed and started the upgrade automatically and then everything went to pot afterwards.
I had to call in an IT Engineer to sort it all out.   I think Gwynant and Nemesis are on Windows 7 so I don't envy them going through the change.
I won't change back to Windows 7 because I think that Microsoft won't support it in the future but it's so annoying when they over rule what you have requested.        :rage:

Same happened here Hugo, but after it had downloaded itself a screen came up with accept or decline what it had done. I clicked decline and it told me that it would take me back to where I was. i.e. Windows 7, but it may take some time. Right I thought, ......you mucked it up.... you can sort it. I left it and it got rid of it and I am now back where I was......................for now till it does it again.

I keep getting this email message no idea who from? What does it mean?

Warning: Your mailbox is almost full. If your mailbox fills up completely
you will not be able to receive any new email. To ensure that you continue
receiving mail you need to remove some or all of the messages from your
mailbox.

How to remove email messages from the server:

If you use an email client (like Outlook Express, Eudora etc.) to read your
mail then simply download your email from our server to your own computer.
Please follow the instructions below.

If you are using Outlook Express as your mail client:

1. Go to 'Tools' on the menu bar and select Accounts.
2. Click on the 'Mail' tab and highlight your account.
3. Click on 'Properties' then select the 'Advanced' tab.
4. Make sure that the box under 'Delivery' labelled 'Leave a copy of
messages on server' does not have a tick in it.
5. Click 'OK' and then 'Close'.
6. Click 'Send and Receive'.

This will download all the messages and delete them from the mail server.
If you are using a different mail client please refer to the help files for
this client.

If you access your email via webmail:
1. Access your email
2. Delete the messages you no longer wish to keep

To ensure your mailbox does not fill up again just delete messages you don't
want to keep on a regular basis.

It sounds as if you have a limit on how many emails you can keep saved in your inbox and you are about to reach that limit.

If I were you, I would delete those you don't need to keep.

It depends on who provides your email. Places like Gmail and BT have high limits, and it also depends on whether you're using IMAP or POP.

I'm with Utility Warehouse, looking at emails on a Samsung tablet, the email does not say who it is from which seems strange? Trouble is I assume most things like this to be some kind of scam, hard to know who or what to trust?

I seem to remember Android devices use IMAP by default.  Best to log into your account on the UW site and check it out, just to make sure it's legit.

Hover your cursor over the sender’s name and it should show an e-mail address.

Can you log into the server itself at UW and do it?

No idea to be honest, best thing probably is to ring UW, they are usually very helpful.

If you're viewing it on a web page as opposed to using a Mail client, then there will be a setting somewhere that will allow it. I know how to do it on Macs, but not Android, I'm afraid.

squiggle here (I need to sort my account out).

The from line in an email isn't much of a guarantee. Basically anyone can appear to be anyone else.  Viewing the message source/headers will show the path the email has taken though.

As I think Ian suggested.  If you get an email purporting  to be from PayPal and you are unsure.  Do not follow the link.  Open a browser and navigate your own way )perhaps a bookmark you have set) to the company web site. If there really is something that needs your attention, it should become apparent when you log in.

POP vs IMAP

In the first instance, which you use depends on the email server.  Some but by no means all email servers do support both protocols. I'd think any email client (eg. thunderbird, outlook, etc.) will support both.

When you do have a choice, it might be worth considering a difference between the 2.

POP: While it is possible to leave a message on the server, POP was designed with the idea that you download messages from the server onto your local email program.

IMAP:  on the other hand was designed with the idea of a central email storage.  As such, I think it is more appropriate for our typical email usages these days where we may for example be wanting to access email from both a mobile device and our desktop computer.

I have had an IPad Air 2 for a couple of years.

Yesterday, I found I was unable to receive emails although I was able send a test email to myself.

Later in the day, all the emails retained in my folders disappeared.

This morning, I am no longer able to send a test email to myself.

Can someone please recommend where I can take my device to have the problem resolved?

That's an iCloud issue, Brian;  I don't think it's an iPad problem. It sounds as though you've been logged out of iCloud, which would stop you receiving, sending or seeing your emails.

Log into iCloud on the web through your browser. You should see all the lost emails still there. If that doesn't solve it get back to me in here and I'll see what else I can do.

I have never used iCloud, Ian.

Nevertheless, I have gone into settings and iCloud Drive is on and if I slide across the bottom to the right to turn on Mail, I am invited to create a free @icloud.com email address to turn on iCloud Mail.

Interestingly (on the iPad subject), I had a couple of apps (1 game and one forum I use) that seem to continually gobble up massive amounts of storage.  Neither requires downloading any files, so it's a mystery as to why that happens.
But, if I delete the app and reinstall, it all gets cleared out and operates perfectly from then on.
It's just something I have to do every couple of months.

Anyone know why Three Towns Forum is telling me the site is not secure ?
I usually go on Latests posts but can now only call up one post and it will not let me move on to the next one.
Title: Re: Help wanted: Computers

It's not Three Towns telling you: it's your browser. This has happened fairly recently with the advent of greater security options built into browsers and the trend towards everyone using https://.  In reality the site is as secure as it's ever been and the notification you're getting only applies if you were storing confidential information. Being a public forum that anyone can use, advice remains the same: be careful what you post, don't reveal personal information and never disclose your passwords.

Your password, incidentally, is encrypted, so even we can't locate it, but the database itself is plain text, so anyone feeling sufficiently masochistic could download it (if they had access, which only Dave and I have) and plough through the massive amounts of text therein.

You can override the browser by going to tools / settings or going into the preferences.  In short, I wouldn't worry about it.

unable to find were it has gone to but Mrs Mull found it.
Now comes up by pressing 2 upper case.

Any reason for this ?  Oh, now pound sign has gone ????

You've probably switched to another keyboard layout (probably US where shift 2 would give @ and shift 3 would give a #). There should be a setting to go back to a UK layout somewhere on your system.

I've had some similar stuff going on on my laptop and it's really annoying but seems to sort itself out after a while.     I had windows 7 before and didn't want the upgrade to windows 10 but they still upgraded it against my wishes.
It has affected my pictures too and every time they update windows 10 I get some type of problem going on with the pictures and other things

I get what you are saying but keyboard layouts (if it is that) can get changed accidentally. I don’t know what version of Windows Mull is using or how he is set up but to use my computer as an example (Plasma 5, a popular desktop/graphical environment for Linux), you will usually have some setting dialog, in this case both a UK and a US layout are configured.

The second image is the right hand side of my task bar.  Set up like this, one simple click where it says “GB” would change over to “US” and the keyboard would behave differently.

Windows is likely to be similar but different, and possibly different from version to version...

I thought I was reasonably techie but i give up. Around two weeks ago I bought myself a playstation4 to pass the time by with. So i started to set it up.
i've got my .V., my modem, a Mac laptop and the playstation so off I go. Two weeks later I still haven't got anywhere. Nowhere.
Ive read up all the instructions i could find on wikipedia, forums, advice centres, dear od google, but still not got there.
The Mac is not easy to connect to because of the small ports, but Ive got Bluetooth and I'm well within range. Ive studied my t.v. manual from front to back. And I am baffled. all of the parts show signs of life but i still cannot get anything up to my t.v. screen.
Does anybody know anyone local who knows anything on this subject. I admit defeat and would recoup anyone financially if they could point me in the direction of someone who knows what todo Mike

This should be an easy one, Mike.  Can you be more specific about the issues?  First off, why do you need a Mac Laptop? We have three PS4s in the family, and none needs a laptop.

If you're getting nothing at all, it could well be the HDMI lead.

The PS4 connects directly to the HDMI port of the TV. For the moment forget the Mac and concentrate on getting the PS4 connected to the TV.  Get a decent HDMI lead and plug one end into the TV and the other into the PS4. Switch the TV on first then the PS4 (tricky to find the 'on' button on the PS4). Wait a while until the PS4 tells you there are 'updates available' then start them and go off and have a cuppa  Or ten. These updates can take a while.

Let us know how you get on.

From what I've read Ian all HDMI Leads are the same, there is no quality advantage in purchasing a more expensive one. :)

A strange thing happened on my computer last night as i turned it on.  The screen saver came on as normal then the picture starting fading and vertical lines came on the screen and the picture disappeared
I couldn't access anything but after about 20 seconds the screen saver came back on and I could gain entry to the computer.
The first thing I checked was the security system and that appeared to be ok but it started doing the same thing again and while the screen had the vertical lines across it I couldn't do anything on it but again the lines went, only to return a while later so when I was able to I switched off the machine

This morning the system is working ok with no problems so far, so it's a mystery as to what was going on last night with the computer

I suspect there is an update due on your computer. This action won't do anything in itself, just click the windows button
on the bottom left hand corner and it will produce a little menu , one of the icons is an off switch (round with a little line at the top)
click on this and there should be options like switch off and update/restart and update  or something similar. Its up to you to do it and I recommend it even if it takes quite a time as it gives increased security.
If you want to be me more adventurous type" updates" in the search box next to the windows button and that will let the computer check for updates should you then  authorise it to do so.
I can see you little finger hovering!!!!

You know me Rhuddlan, I don't like change especially on computers but Windows 10 updates my computer whether I like it or not so I have no control on that.
When it happened the whole screen changed to a pale background with these multi coloured vertical lines all over it and I couldn't see any buttons on the screen let alone use them
Next time I'm on the computer at night and it happens I will exit it by pressing the silver button and  go to bed

Anyway what are you doing on the forum when you should be relaxing in the sunshine on that island?

For uses of any Microsoft software it's worth noting that EU legal judgements now treat the accompanying licence key as property that can be bought and sold like other lawfully acquired possessions. That. of course, is not the judgement that Microsoft wanted. They’d prefer to force purchasers of second hand media to buy new keys, but that is now illegal under EU law.

Just a reminder to what Ian has posted.       I had a Canon Pixma MG 5150 printer but it went kaput just after I had ordered 5 new in cartridges so the cartridges are no use to me now.

The Canon cartridges are CLI-526 and one is CLI-525.   and can be used in some other 5 cartridge Canon Pixma printers.      The inks are new and unopened so if any forum member can use them they are welcome to them and can have them for free

If any one can use them then please send a PM to either Ian or myself and we can arrange for them to be picked up.

A while ago I said I would send a copy of an article on the Kinmel Camp railway branch that was printed in the Back Track Magazine.

For some reason I can not get into scan. In the past I have just pressed the Printer button and a menu came up,easy, no problem.
Now all I get is a panel asking me if I want to install an app that will make changes to my hard drive. Very reluctant to do this .
Every couple of weeks Windows 10 keeps making updates and every time it seems to cause problems . Why do they need to do this when everything is working fine ?

Any sugestions please for me to get into scanning ?

A VIRTUAL reality suite for Esports costing £120,000 has been installed at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea campus.

The college has started to offer an A level equivalent qualification in Esports. Learners will be taught this course within the virtual reality suite.

Esports are a type of competition using video games. It often takes the form of multiplayer competitions, particularly between professional players, individually or as teams.

A spokesperson for Coleg Llandrillo said: “As competitive video games continue to integrate into popular culture, total Esports’ viewership is expected to leap from 454 million in 2019 to 646 million in 2023, per insider intelligence estimates.
