Title: Old Photos of Conwy
Post by: DaveR on September 19, 2010, 02:43:38 pm
A thread for old photos and postcards of Conwy...

Here's another lantern slide currently up for sale on Ebay, showing a section of the Quay (in use as a scrapyard!) and the Castle in the early 1900s:

Joking aside, quite a few of Conwy's archways are not original, the one above was constructed by Thomas Telford for his new road in 1826, as was the one on the Bangor Road. Curiously, the little pedestrian archway at the side of the harbourmaster's office is original. The one on Berry Street was built to enable easier access to the Bodlondeb Estate sometime in the 1800s. The oldest way into Conwy is the archway opposite the British Legion (by Conwy Visitor Centre), the pathway actually predates the town walls as a means of access into Conwy, hence it is on an odd angle to the walls themselves.

Double-headed "Black 5" locomotives passing through Conwy, summer 1960.

It's remarkabe how "Long Shanks"  $uk anticipated the building of the railway, by adding that arch to the castle walls, some 600 years before the actual tracks were laid. Now that's what I call a visionary!  ;D

Trojan,
Longshanks  $uk was even cleverer than that!  (Or maybe it was the Savoyard castle builder)

He even anticipated the advent of hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream, by building a fantastic little upstairs cafe adjacent to the castle gates!

Yummmmm.

I was thinking that was possibly the case but it looks too far to the left (unless the artist made a mistake). Looking on a modern aeral view, it would seem to be where Bryn Corach is now but its not the same building as Bryn Corach looks much smaller:

Judging by the hairline, that looks like my Uncle Dai standing behind the front two.

He was the foreman/driver for Oaklands Haulage who had a yard in Victoria Drive in Llandudno Junction and had the contract to take the fish down to London.

In the early sixties, I once went down with him to London Billingsgate to deliver the fish.

I've never forgotten that first visit to London.

Born in 1770, one of England’s earliest romantic poets - William Wordsworth - visited Conwy during a summer vacation. Here, he was inspired to write the poem about a small child who visits her family grave.

A small plaque and wrought iron frame now covers the little grave, which can be seen within the grounds of St Mary’s Parish Church.

—A simple child,
That lightly draws its breath,
And feels its life in every limb,
What should it know of death?

I met a little cottage girl:
She was eight years old, she said;
Her hair was thick with many a curl
That clustered round her head.

She had a rustic, woodland air,
And she was wildly clad;
Her eyes were fair, and very fair;
—Her beauty made me glad.

"Sisters and brothers, little maid,
How many may you be?"
"How many? Seven in all," she said,
And wondering looked at me.

"And where are they? I pray you tell."
She answered, "Seven are we;
And two of us at Conway dwell,
And two are gone to sea.

"Two of us in the churchyard lie,
My sister and my brother;
And in the churchyard cottage, I
Dwell near them with my mother."

"You say that two at Conway dwell,
And two are gone to sea,
Yet ye are seven! — I pray you tell,
Sweet maid, how this may be."

Then did the little maid reply,
"Seven boys and girls are we;
Two of us in the churchyard lie,
Beneath the churchyard tree."

"You run about, my little maid,
Your limbs they are alive;
If two are in the churchyard laid,
Then ye are only five."

"Their graves are green, they may be seen,"
The little maid replied,
"Twelve steps or more from my mother's door,
And they are side by side.

"My stockings there I often knit,
My kerchief there I hem;
And there upon the ground I sit,
And sing a song to them.

"And often after sunset, sir,
When it is light and fair,
I take my little porringer,
And eat my supper there.

"The first that died was sister Jane;
In bed she moaning lay,
Till God released her of her pain;
And then she went away.

"So in the churchyard she was laid;
And, when the grass was dry,
Together round her grave we played,
My brother John and I.

"And when the ground was white with snow,
And I could run and slide,
My brother John was forced to go,
And he lies by her side."

"How many are you, then," said I,
"If they two are in heaven?"
Quick was the little maid's reply,
"O master! we are seven."

"But they are dead; those two are dead!
Their spirits are in heaven!"
'T was throwing words away; for still
The little maid would have her will,
And say, "Nay, we are seven!"

We are seven is a lovely poem but it's just that. Much the same as Bedd Gelet (one of my favourite welsh stories) until I read an old book and it explained the story was merely a ploy by a south walian landlord who wanted to boost trade in his pub in the victorian era. Gutted I was Gutted.

I bet the "ugly house" was lies too..............................................................please say no!!!

Talking of Steamers Trojan

I remember reading one of my dads book ages ago. I read the story of the Rothsay (castle) steamer. It left liverpool docks 1831 and ran aground by Puffin Island. Two fellas one old and one young found themselves clinging to the same plank of wood as the steamer sank. it soon became apparent that the plank would not support the pair of them, the old man wanted to let go to save the life of the young man, and the young man felt vice versa. They both let go of the plank at the same time.  both thinking the other had died they were reunited on the beach at Puffin Island.

Now how heroic is that, I have to be honest people, I hope you don't ever end up on the opposite side of my sinking piece of plank, 'cos I'll tell you now, I will have a better excuse to live and I'll kick harder lol  :-* _))* L0L

Aerial shot of Conwy in the 1960s. Note the large Railway Goods yard in front of the walls which is now a landscaped area and path from town to car park, also the Vicarage Gardens car park is still the Vicarage Gardens at that point!

Looking out through the doors of the Civic Hall, maybe in the 1920s. I was interested to see that the building was referred to as the 'Market Hall' back then:

I liked the one Dave displayed above of Castle Street, especially the Cycle Depot.

Cycles built to order on the premises - I expect they shipped parts in from a manufacturer like Sunbeam then assembled them? (note the advertisemnts on the roof)

I was looking at the map of Conwy from 1890 and noticed that the Post Office was shown as being on Castle Street - was it the building that is now the Council office next to the NatWest bank, or was it maybe even the bank itself? There is a Post Box and Phone Box outside, which is the usual clue as to the former location of a Post Office.

There is also a mention on that map of 'the house with the curious arms on it' - a reference to the Old College. The Arms are the carved wooden supports underneath the first floor window.

Only a very small remnant of the Arms remains today, above the BetFred shop:

Does anyone know where the house known as Bro Llewelyn on Bangor Road, Conway was? I had relatives by the name of Evans living there between c1901-1929. Any photographs would be great  $thanx$

I also came across another address yesterday in a 'Letters of Administration' document dated 1843 for a John Owen(s) Mariner deceased - Township: Myn y Don; Parish: Conwy; County: Caernarvon; Diocese: Bangor. Any clues as to where Myn y Don is/was?  ???

In the 1929 Directory Bro Llewellyn was in between Tower House and Bro Tudwal.  Edward Evans is listed as a Joiner

Min y Don was on Morfa Drive in the same directory  - obviously many years later so could be totally the wrong track, but was part of the Dr.Garrett convalescent home and sanatorium which was made up of three large houses

Before he passed on at an early age, an earlier home of David ‘Tower House’ was just on the left of Bangor Road immediately after one had gone through the top arch so I am assuming Bro Llewelyn would have been the second house.

The houses were situated just before the left turn up Mount Pleasant.

The properties have long since been demolished.

Thanks 'Suepp' I had seen the entry in the Trade Directory, unfortunately I didnt know where Tower House and Bro Tudwal where either.

I suspected Bro Llewelyn might have been through the arch before turning up Mount Pleasant but good to have someone else confirm it. Thank you 'Bri'. I know my dad told me years ago that houses around there were demolished when a program of clearing the town walls was undertaken. Just need an old photo now!

Interesting comments on Myn-y-Don Sue, I'll have to look into it further. Had a quick look on the 1841 Census but couldn't see any mention of it.

Thanks again

Paula

Regarding the photo (posted Sept  10) of the two boats on the Quay, my dad believes they could be the "Penorva" (wooden vessel) owned by Jack Williams (jack Nick) & "Glenmoore" (dark blue boat) which belonged to the Barr brothers.

Thanks for these lovely photos.  As a young boy brought up on the Morfa, I recognise many features in these pics, Including Beach House, my grandparent's house, and The Beacons - in whose ruins I used to play.  However, whilst the first photo is certainly one of many Army camps of that era - it is most definitely NOT Conwy Morfa.  A cursory examination of the adjacent river & skyline will confirm this (by those familiar with the area - or by comparison to the other photos which are "The Morfa" camp). :o

Hello BilkoBailey,
You are correct, The first postcard in the group of tented camps on the Morfa is at Deganwy. You can see the main channel of the river at low tide, on the left. And because it looks out over towards Anglesey, no high ground over the horizon.

This picture was in Chrissy's Kitchen in Conwy.  She said she had received it from a friend a few years ago.  I asked if I could copy it and in return I reframed it.  I've never seen this picture before and so I asked the locals in the Legion.  They were divided between Rosemary Lane which runs up between the Railway station and the HSB Bank (was) and the where the Harbour Office is situated now.  Personally because you can see the turret in the background and it matches up with the view now, it's unmistakably where the Harbour office is.  It looks like it too used to be a pub but I've yet to find out which one.

28 Nostalgic pictures show Conwy through the 20th century
These nostalgic pictures show some of the iconic landmarks and locations of Conwy through the 20th century.

From Conwy Castle to the Conwy tunnel, these places are synonymous with the historic town.

You can see the Conwy Bridge being built in 1958 and sightseers pack the platforms to welcome first train into the re-opened Conwy station.

There are also images of fishermen unloading fishing boats on Conwy Quay in June 1949 and scouts marching through the town during the parade to celebrate the coronation of George V on June 22 1911.

If any of these pictures stir any memories you can get in touch by tweeting @dailypostwales , via our Facebook page or by commenting at the bottom of this article.

If you enjoyed this article you might also like our nostalgic pictures of Caernarfon, Mold, Holyhead, Colwyn Bay, Bangor, Llandudno, Wrexham, Llangollen, Connah's Quay, Prestatyn and Rhyl.

Whilst researching "Rodyn" the birth place of a relation in Conwy (Owen Owens b1817-d1899), I came across the following information and wondered if one of the properties in the photo could indeed be Rodyn?

CONWY QUAY
ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

CONWY COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL
November, 1997 by Andrew Davidson
Ymddiriedolaeth Archaeoloegol Gwynedd Gwynedd Archaeological Trust

Lifeboat station and former cottages called 'Rodyn'.  A modern building with pebble dashed walls and pitched slate roof which houses the Inshore Rescue Boat. A row of cottages formerly stood on this site, which were taken down in the 1920's. They were called '"Rodyn" after the lime-kiln (ocryn=kiln) which preceded them and which is shown on the 1777 Holland map. The cottages are visible on a number of photographs and on a painting by Warren Williams (information kindly supplied by Mrs Pattison).

Tellytubby sent me this old photo of the queue of traffic that often went from Llandudno Junction to Penmaenmawr and beyond.     I can remember the traffic lights on Conwy Suspension bridge because that was only a single carriageway and then the level crossing  by the old Maelgwyn Pub at Llandudno Junction

Any idea when that photo was taken as the second car (Triumph Dolomite/Toledo) in the queue appears to be J-reg so would be 1971 ... wasn't the bridge open well before then?

Sorry DVT but I've no idea when the photo was taken but you are correct about the 2nd car so it must have been taken in the early 1970's I would imagine.
The "new" road bridge was opened in 1958 but my comments and memories go back further than that but it was my father that was driving the car at the time as I was still in primary school then    ;D

I worked at Ferranti’S in them days and travelled there daily, it was a nightmare. So in the end bought a motorcycle and worked my way past them, the furthest back was Llanfairfechan as this was long before the A55 we had to travel through all the towns on the way so at it’s in the summer went over the Sychnant pass down to Guffyn and came out by the Castle.

During the early seventies I worked over in Bangor and I would always have to return home over Sychnant Pass.

At the time, I knew a Conwy Town Councillor very well and suggested to him that they should consider sacrificing the small car park immediately in front of the Castle and replace it with a roundabout.

Needless to say, the rest is history.  ;)
