oking aside, quite a few of Conwy's archways are not original, the one above was constructed by Thomas Telford for his new road in 1826, as was the one on the Bangor Road. Curiously, the little pedestrian archway at the side of the harbourmaster's office is original. The one on Berry Street was built to enable easier access to the Bodlondeb Estate sometime in the 1800s. The oldest way into Conwy is the archway opposite the British Legion (by Conwy Visitor Centre), the pathway actually predates the town walls as a means of access into Conwy, hence it is on an odd angle to the walls themselves. This map from 1800 shows how few ways in/out of Conwy there were back then:

But thats the point isn't it?
If I built a castle and a walled town, I would want VERY FEW ways into it!

He even anticipated the advent of hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream, by building a fantastic little upstairs cafe adjacent to the castle gates! This one?
Yummmmm.

A rather uncomfortable looking Mr T J Hughes, Conwy's Town Crier in 1875:
Would that large building be the Council Offices at Bodlondeb?I was thinking that was possibly the case but it looks too far to the left (unless the artist made a mistake). Looking on a modern aeral view, it would seem to be where Bryn Corach is now but its not the same building as Bryn Corach looks much smaller:
Probably just a coincidence but who knows, I can't find any more information about him.QuoteA rather uncomfortable looking Mr T J Hughes, Conwy's Town Crier in 1875:
Did he found a department store in Liverpool?

We are seven is a lovely poem but it's just that. Much the same as Bedd Gelet (one of my favourite welsh stories) until I read an old book and it explained the story was merely a ploy by a south walian landlord who wanted to boost trade in his pub in the victorian era. Gutted I was Gutted.
I bet the "ugly house" was lies too..............................................................please say no!!!
I've got some of those photos, the last one if you look closely through the arch you can see the Albion as a three story bui;lding. Facinating love it ZXZThe last photo on the arch I mean x

I was wondering what the fenced off circle area was to the right of the picture.
I asked a friend of mine what the fenced circle was he said it was just a small garden feature.

Conwy's Civic Hall ablaze sometime in the 1960s - does anyone have a date for this yet?The Theatres Trust web site has it listed as in continuous use until 1966 when it was rebuilt after the fire.

Miss Barlleg's school Conwy in 1885 - but where was it located?I took some photos a while back round the back of The Mansion in Conwy high Street and the background houses look very familiar to the ones located there. I'll have to upload the pics to confirm.

This picture was in Chrissy's Kitchen in Conwy. She said she had received it from a friend a few years ago. I asked if I could copy it and in return I reframed it. I've never seen this picture before and so I asked the locals in the Legion. They were divided between Rosemary Lane which runs up between the Railway station and the HSB Bank (was) and the where the Harbour Office is situated now. Personally because you can see the turret in the background and it matches up with the view now, it's unmistakably where the Harbour office is. It looks like it too used to be a pub but I've yet to find out which one.
