Wales sees massive spike in dangerous 100-day cough that leaves people 'feeling awful'
Cases of whooping cough are at their highest levels for nearly a decade

Whooping cough is on the rise again after March saw the highest rate of the potentially ?dangerous? disease for ten years, Public Health Wales warned. Statistics revealed there were more cases in Wales in one week of March 2024 than the whole of 2021 and 2022 combined.

Now pregnant women and those with young children are being urged to get a vaccine as the disease, also known as the 100-day cough, continues to spread in the community. Public Health Wales figures show there were 55 reported cases of whooping cough in 2021, 55 in 2022, and 199 in 2023.

But in the four weeks from March 4 there were 315 cases. This included 122 cases in a single week, starting March 11, - more than 2021 and 2022 combined. The actual numbers are likely far higher as many cases go unreported.

Regional figures aren?t available for 2024, but North Wales, the area covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, had the joint highest number of whooping cough cases in Wales in 2021, the highest number in 2022, and the second highest number in 2023.

A CARPET and flooring company that supplies Buckingham Palace and other royal residences is celebrating 60 years of business.

Linney Cooper, which is based in Llandudno with a showroom in Rhos-on-Sea, started from humble beginnings in Colwyn Bay in 1964.

The family-run business was founded by Robert Hughes in his basement, supplying residents with bespoke carpets and rugs.

Robert?s sons and nephew joined in 1987 with his youngest grandson Dewi Hughes continuing the family tradition.

A RESCUE operation involving a man stranded on his yacht with his brother and grandchildren in Rhyl was shown as part of a BBC programme last night (April 23).

Members of Rhyl?s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew featured on yesterday?s episode of Saving Lives at Sea.

The Rhyl segment focused on an incident during a rainy evening last year, when skipper Brian came into difficulty on the ?infamously rough? Irish Sea.

An emergency Coastguard call had been made reporting that his yacht had lost engine power while caught in the storm offshore.

THE Eurovision Song Contest is coming to Colwyn Bay next month - on the big screen!

The big entertainment event of the year will be relayed live from Malmo, Sweden, on a giant screen on the town?s new pier.

There will be a chance to dance the night away to the sounds of a DJ who performed at the Eurovision village in Liverpool last year.

D J Kels will be keeping the energy high throughout the evening spinning plenty of vintage and recent Eurovision songs.

Amy Dyke of the Colwyn Bay Pier Trust said: "Everybody loves the Eurovision contest and its special social atmosphere, so we thought local people would relish the chance to see it larger than life with other local fans.

"The atmosphere will be fantastic and we hope people will embrace the Eurovision Fanzone by dressing up, bring their friends and family with them and really make a night of it.?

The event is brought to fans jointly by ?Together for Colwyn Bay? and ?The Colwyn Bay Pier Trust?.

It's a shame like you say Norman and I hope that it will soon be sorted out.      It could be worse though if those Goats had got into the Lawn Cemetery.    Yes the grass would have been eaten but the Goats would have left their calling cards all over the place.... Ugh!
It made me think of the time when our cousin Ivy was buried at St Tudno's and there were dozens and dozens of flowers there all laid out on the grave and paths.    When I took Aunty Mary there in the evening all the flowers had gone, been eaten by the Goats and all that remained were signs of appreciation from the Goats

A Rhododendron is one of my favourite flowers and the display at Bodnant is always spectacular, you can even get a good view of them from the car park
I was looking at my Rhododendrons in the garden this morning and they are starting to come out in this spell of warm weather  that we have been having recently

On another matter I also noticed that the Badger had climbed the tree last night in another attempt to get at the peanut feeder but although he made a mess of the feeder he couldn't get at the peanuts.   For a while I have noticed broken branches and bits of Clematis at the base of the tree but never guessed that it was the Badger again until I saw the state of the peanut feeder.
The wire fence I erected all around the back garden may be "Teddy" proof but it's certainly not Badger proof

Charities are reporting heightened concern among pensioners who fear being dragged into paying income tax.

The state pension rose by 8.5% in early April, but the knock on effect is that hundreds of thousands of pensioners on lower incomes have been drawn into paying income tax.

Most pensioners will pay more tax this year as a result, owing to frozen tax thresholds.

Age Concern and Independent Age both say they have seen an increase in calls to their helplines in recent weeks from pensioners confused about the issue.

Who will pay more tax?    .... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz74yw87jygo
