Title: Recommended Tradesmen in the 3 Towns area
Post by: Hugo on May 26, 2011, 04:08:58 pm
I used a roofer to clean the moss off my roof and they did an excellent job at a very reasonable price.  The firm is from Llangefni Anglesey and the prop. is Anthony Evans Tel 01248 489108.
They do work all over N West Wales and I've seen them in the area very recently.

I get all my car work done at Llandudno Motors. They look after me superbly, tell me when I should buy original replacement parts or when I can buy equally good copies far cheaper. Labour charges are very reasonable and you can save a fortune compared to main dealers.

I would endorse them too..
Having been in the motor trade I know  an honest garage ( or otherwise)  when I see one .
Being too lazy/old to do my own repairs I'm happy to give them my business

The useful and informative discussion about my £100+ per hour plumbing bill seems to have been removed ( no names were mentioned). Presumably the moderator is a plumber ?
What are acceptable rates for skilled tradesmen ? Isn't that part of the perception of who is good or bad too ?

Our usual plumber Michael Ludenbach, has sadly had to stop working as a plumber due to his knees. A great shame as I have worked with him on some jobs and without doubt is the best person I have ever worked with! He is German and has a great logical way of doing things! Luckily he trained an apprentice who has now taken over the business, he will be my choice next time I have a plumbing job that needs doing!

It took me ages to find this post and when I did it didn't have a recommendation.
I would suggest this whole topic is best suited as a sticky in "Ask a local" and hopefully there would be more input then too.

Now, does anyone know an outside painter/decorator that isn't fully booked for months and if possible has ready access to a cherry picker as the height of my roof is three storeys plus a finial on the top of the eves.
Thanks in anticipation Dave

My neighbour phoned me and said that his TV reception was awful, the picture was breaking up and often the screen would go blank and a notice on the screen would say  no signal or poor reception and he wondered if I was having a similar problem with my TV.   I said I was having a similar problem so my neighbour said that he would get a TV engineer in that had been recommended to him.
My neighbour was thrilled with the results so I used his  engineer to fix my TV's and we are equally pleased with our results too.
I could recommend him to anyone as he is very good and his prices are reasonable too.  He is Mark Worthington    Tel  07824 340449

We decided to have heat pump and air con installed and the chap who did it was outstanding, both in terms of workmanship and price.

His name is Mike, and the company is:
Northwest Airconditioning Ltd

145A Ashley Road

Hale

Altrincham

Cheshire
 WA14 2UN

Heat pump systems heat your house using heat extracted from the outside air. They can extract heat down to -15C and, in summer, work in reverse to keep the house pleasantly cool. Cost: about the same a single double glazed window.

Our Up-and-over garage door broke on Monday and no one seemed to know of a repairer. We eventually found a chap and not only does he give yu a quote on the 'phone, but he's extremely good, doesn't charge VAT and left the garage door working better than we can remember.

That is really good to know Ian. The wires on mine snapped last year and I looked for someone then but to no avail. I then thought of doing it myself, however, it looked a bit complex with 'cones' and 'a spring that can kill you' (as one YouTube user described it ). So I did a 'bodge' job using some electrical wire and block cable connectors which sort of works but I will give this chap a go.

Hello!

Anyone able to recommend a chimney specialist? Needs repointing, flashing renewing and cowls installing. Has come up on a survey as being a source of damp on our 1930s proposed purchase.

Also, guttering for bay window and general replacement of original cast iron gutters.

Thanks, Stuart

We can highly recommend T.J. Evans Roofing Ltd. 0791 9074891.

They have done numerous jobs for us, roofing, flat roofs, guttering, barge boards and chimneys.

T. J and his men have finally stopped our chimneys leaking after many others have tried and failed. The house is very old and is a listed building, therefore no task is easy !

So I need a Stonemason and an Iron gate fabricator. Any recommendations? Thanks.

May I ask if anyone has any recent experience of a GOOD plumbing and heating engineer.
Please don't reply with 'British Gas' as I'm not able use them at this point, because I don't have the monthly plan.

Since the great Brian Thomas gave up dealing with gas, it has been nigh on impossible to get a reliable or even basically competent firm (or individual)  to service my boiler and fix some issues with my underfloor heating flow temperature.

The first local firm made the boiler problem worse whilst servicing it.
The 2nd guy basically told me to sod off as he was too busy to take on any work.
The 3rd company misdiagnosed the problem, lied about what parts needed replacing, and never turned up for the next appointment in any case.
The guy who came today left a gas leak when he left, as he never even checked the meter before he left... which is an absolute BASIC requirement of any gas work.  That's now fixed, but I can't rely on him to complete the job.

The cold weather is fast approaching, it wasn't a priority before, but now is quickly becoming one.

No idea Fester but I would hazard a guess that he is. He was originally brought in to do the gas inspection required to rent the house so he would have to hold certification to do that I would expect.

That wasn’t an option for me, Fester.

For all the retailer knows, I could be a strapping 6’ 3” twenty five year old.

When we had both Homebase and B&Q, I seem to recall these fence panels were half this price.

Can anyone recommend a good computer repair shop?  My laptop starts up, then freezes, then the screen goes blank.  Worked perfectly well last time I used it, a few weeks ago.  It is only used when out on motorsport events, to work out results.  I have previously had all my computer work done in a shop in Colwyn Bay but I am told that has been sold and I have been told that the new owners are nowhere near as capable and helpful as the previous owners.

I am looking for someone who can do a reliable job so everything works fine again - it may be a simple job or it may mean new parts - I don't know, as I have no idea when it comes to programming and sorting out issues with computers!

Thanks in anticipation.
Dave

Morning everyone. Hope you all survived the floods as we did until a pipe on the bathroom radiator decided to leak while we were in Switzerland despite having been put there 7years ago!
When things have dried off we will need a plasterer and a painter and decorator.
Can anyone help with recommendations for these skills please?
I realise we could be in a long queue as so many homes have had flooding in the area but we are anxious to avoid a dodgy repair job.

I have just read Dave's post above this from last August about the computer shop in Colwyn Bay. They did a great job on my computer recently and even managed to save all my photos. The mobile phone shop nearby has also done a good job for me recently repairing a cracked screen. We are very thankful for these Colwyn Bay skills!

During the Winter time I had my gutter cleaned as I was unable to do the job myself on account that it was above our sunlounge.  I found out that the firm also did patio cleaning so I recently got the firm in to clean a rather neglected patio and decking.
Now thanks to Conwy Drive Clean Ltd the patio and decking look like new.  Ray was incredibly professional and I'll have no hesitation in using the firm again but I'll try and keep it looking ok in the meantime

We have used this company for our boiler servicing, and found them extremely professional and fair, and after being told this story, I think we will continue to use them again............

From FB..."You couldn't write this but here goes: Woke up this morning at 5am to put heating on for my 82 year old Mother. Nothing happened. No hot water or heating.
House is freezing and no Christmas Dinner for us!
Anyway boiler insurance cant send anyone out till Monday and mums not well enough to move to another house for weekend.
Is there anyone that can look at a Potterton boiler on Christmas day please?"

After many replies and advice, Mark Hendley from "Hendleys Heating Engineers – keeping you warm all year round", lived up to his advert, by turning up on Xmas morning and fixing the problem.

One good turn etc....

Can anyone recommend a local person who deals with repairs of electric Chainsaws?

I have a pole chainsaw and I've used it quite often this week until the belt became loose.     I've put the belt back on but it's not cutting now and when I've tried to cut things the circuit breaker has cut off the electricity supply
I suspect that I've put the cutting edge of the belt in the opposite rotation to the blade but I'd rather someone check it over for me
I've just been to Screwfix and Denbigh Pland Hire but neither firm were interested in looking at the chainsaw

I found a You tube video possibly of some help... when you say belt, do you mean the cutting chain, because that does loosen and it is very easy to put it on backwards, make sure the teeth are pointing forwards.

My pole chainsaw in the video is exactly like mine and I found the video very helpful.     I fitted the cutting chain like the guy demonstrated and it appeared to be working fine BUT when I have tried to saw anything then the machine cut out.      The circuit breaker was not triggered by the pole cutting out so the fault is somewhere in the pole.
It needs a professional to have a look at it so I'll take Hammy's advice and try Lucas Plant Hire in Llandudno Junction.
Thanks Steve and Hammy for your replies it's really appreciated

Hammy,  I took your advice and visited Lucas Plant Hire in Llandudno Junction with my chainsaw pole.  The person on the counter that I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful, completely the opposite to Screwfix where I bought the pole from.
I explained the problem to him and he dismantled the blade and then put it together again properly explaining to me where I had gone wrong and then even tested it on some wood in the workshop.
I left the shop a very happy bunny and it was so refreshing to have a service like that.       Thanks very much for your recommendation Hammy and in future I will always use Lucas Plant Hire before any other local firm

For over 35 years I have been doing an annual cut on three tall hedges that I have in my garden but last year because of a back injury I used Woody's Garden Services to cut my conifer hedge.    I'm honest enough to admit that it was the best cut the hedge has ever had so this year they have done all three hedges for me and I'm extremely pleased with the result
The gardeners are extremely hard working and conscientious and the cost is very reasonable too

Contact Martin on
mob 07585779349  or 01492 588068 and I'm sure that you'll be pleased with the results

It has been very similar with me in the past Steve but I never told Mrs H about my exploits on the 20 foot high Laurel in my back garden.
That hedge has now been reduced to 9 feet
Mrs H has banned me from doing them in the future and has said that it's cheaper to get the gardeners in than to pay for all my physiotherapy treatments after I've cut the hedge

The lady next door to me had  a lad from Rhuddlan Avenue, just up the road from me,  who calls his firm "Gutter Pro", He used a suction system and she was very happy with the result, as she has just bought the property and the previous owner had never had the gutters cleaned since the conservatory was built in the nineties. I don't know how much he charged but I'm sure he would give you a price.

I'll be in touch with the firm this week so thanks again for the recommendation
