I see that Suepp has been busily posting some old photos in the Gallery:

Don't forget, if anyone has any of their own photos to add, please do so (any member can add photos to the gallery) or you can email them to me at adminatthreetownsforum.co.uk (replace the 'at' with an @ symbol) and I will add them for you.

Just like to inform that the Donkey Lady, Olwen (Hughes) Burroughs is now in a nursing home. It seems unlikely that she will be able to continue with the the donkeys on the shore next year. With the costs of the Licence, Public Liability Insurance, Stabling, Fodder, Winter Quartering, Wages for assistants, Vets Fees, etc. it could be the end of an era. The family have provided Donkey Rides for the best part of a century, or longer. It would be appropriate if a Plaque would be placed on their residence in Jubilee St, similar to the one for the Codman Family, of the Punch and Judy fame. Any idea how one would go about requesting/arranging one? *&(
-
That's sad news. A plaque would be a good idea.
-
What a shame. :( I hope someone else can take it on, still a very popular attraction and a goldmine, I'm sure.
Is this Olwen?

Perhaps this is a business opportunity for someone in the forum?
Yes, who do we know that has a large back garden?
-
Sorry to disappoint you Dave, but from conversations with one of the family, it is far from being a lucrative business. On the contrary, in today's societies expectations, it would be regarded as below poverty level. Due to the costs I mentioned previously. I think that the family are considering how they can continue. :(
-
As regards the Photo with the donkeys, I think that the lady with them is from the family on the Orme that has/had, donkeys
-
I have sent an e-mail to the Clerk of the Council requesting information on the procedure for obtaining a Plaque to be placed on the 'Donkey Lady's' home. I''l keep you informed of the progress. And request support if and when required. Y^^Y
-
Hi Quiggs, it was nice to meet you yesterday!
Am I confused? because I thought the Donkeys on the bech were housed in those fields near Black Gate on The Orme?
They are usually led around by a man, so I thought all was well?
-
There are more than one family with Donkeys in Llandudno, but I believe that the family of Olwen Hughes Burroughs were the first. I'll try and gain confirmation of all the details, ASAP.

I believe the Jones family own the ones on the Orme.
One trader Billy Pip sold his business to the Jones family in the early 1940's. Les Jones came out of the Army in 1945 and used his gratuity to buy into his Father's business.

Britain's longest married couple (77 years) honeymooned in Llandudno.
1933 LLANDUDNO, HERE WE COME!
The couple went straight from wedding reception to honeymoon. The best man, Ralph's brother Eric, took a suitcase of clothes along for the groom and Phyllis changed out of her wedding dress in the vestry.
'I wore plus fours!' laughs Ralph. The short trousers were trendy at the time.

The couple went straight from wedding reception to honeymoon
They took the last train from Sheffield at 10.30pm - the 'honeymoon express' - to Llandudno, where they stayed in a boarding house. 'Back then you stayed in houses which had been recommended by friends,' says Phyllis. 'It was a lovely honeymoon.'

For many years Llandudno had a resident photographer who photographed people in the street. The photographer would then give a ticket to the subjects, in order for them to purchase the photographs from the photographer's studio when they had been developed at a later date.
These three photo's from the same area in Vaughan Street are dated 1935, 1936 and 1937 and the subjects are Sarah Anne Jones of Dyserth & daughters. They were more than likely snapped, whilst walking from the train station into town.

I used to love those boats and then one year we came in August and they were gone and replaced by the Golden Goose amusement arcade :'( :'( :( I can't remember which year, around 1970?
-
The Golden Goose was built in 1969/70, so you are spot on. Back then, the pier's original owners, the Llandudno Pier Company, sold out to TrusthouseForte Leisure, who had been buying up piers around the UK and 'modernising' them by building large amusement arcades at their entrances.

Pat Colin's fairground in Colwyn Bay had the same electric powered boats. I always preferred them to the dodgems, they were more peaceful and, I used to think, he had to have more skill to control them

I guess she could be an older sister to John Cravetto.
-
This must be an early one, anyone got any guesses as to a date?
Probably sometime in the 1890s.
-
Father used to work on those boats at the pier entrance at one time and they seemed then to be connected with Tucsons amusements underneath the boats because he would also work there at times as well. I've got a photo of him and Jock Leslie on the pier in the snow of 1946 so perhaps it was then, although my memory says it was later. I've also a niggling feeling they had some connection with the Osborne hotel - they were his mates and he also used to drive Bob Kerr's taxis. :-\

Hi does anyone know the date of the labour club childrens party photo? A little girl on it looks a lot like myself at that age.

Hi and welcome to the Forum. :) You're referring to this pic, I think?

Hi Dave..thanks for the welcome :)
Yes thats the photo i was asking about.
Do you still have the category about local characters? I cant seem to find it.
-
That was on the old Forum, rather than this one. I do have the old database of posts but its very difficult to pull any information out of it easily. Nonetheless, I shall have a go at resurrecting the Local Characters thread when I get some time. :)

I think that it was 1964. I can name some of the children. I'm second from right on the front row :D

Silhouette portrait of Welsh politician David Lloyd George (1863-1945), made by Harry Lawrence Oakley at Llandudno. Oakley made tens of thousands of silhouettes between the 1920s and 1950s. He produced portraits, book and newspaper illustrations, and stationery. He perfected the technique of speedily cutting folded paper with scissors, with no prior drawing, and found a good market for portraits. During his time as a soldier in the First World War he designed posters for the army. After the war he continued to earn his living from silhouettes and made portraits of many famous people including royalty.

My Grandmother always called Gin "Mother's ruin" as housewife's used to drink it as it left no alcohol smell on their breath.
They often became dependant on the stuff.

Of course; that's the Myth Wales pageant....
-
Whilst talking with Rob Pritchard last night, the subject of "Welsh dress" was bought up. I too had always thought the "Welsh Ladies" dress was a myth, he reckons they did wear very similar clothing to that of the postcards as in, the hat, long skirts and shawl, however it was the uniformed colour, black and red that was the myth. *&(

This could be connected to the Rebecca Riots of 1839-1943 which took place against taxation. The rioters, often men dressed as women, took their actions against toll-gates, as they were tangible representations of high taxes and tolls. The riots ceased prior to 1844 due to several factors, including increased troop levels, a desire by the protestors to avoid violence and the appearance of criminal groups using the guise of Rebecca for their own purposes. In 1844 a Parliamentary act to consolidate and amend the laws relating to turnpike trusts in Wales was passed
-
I saw that Lorri posted a question in the Gallery about this photo of the Darts Team at the Cross Keys in Penrhynside 1970's:
"do you know the names of these people in the darts team or do you know the name of the guy on the left side in the white jumper ?"
Anyone know? $thanx$

Originally this picture was on the wall in the Albion Conwy. Various ideas were put forward as to where the photo originated. One local said the men dressed in traditional Welsh costume to protest against English law. How true it is I have no idea.

Hi Barbiroli,
It would be the Llandudno branch as far as I can remember although my Dad did work in Hotpoint but as far as I know he and my Mother were members of the Llandudno branch in Madoc Street?? . My Dad, also long gone, is rear second row second from the right.

You're right, it was in Madoc Street, where the ROAB Club is now.
-
Evan Thomas is third from the left in the back row. I know the two on the right end of the top row too - the one second from the end was a smashing bloke but I can't bring his name to mind. The one in the white jumper is very familiar and I'm sure was well known in town.
-
Is that Teddy Grace in the white jumper? In the Cross Keys darts team photo that's our Joe (Stallard) on the right of the group. I'm sure the man second from the right in the back row worked on the gas (Bob?). )*)&

edit:how could I not recognise my own father! minus his glasses and with a silly expression!
Dad only retired from the Town band this year having been a member since 1945.
-
I think the tall guy is Charlie 'Chuck'
-
Your Dad must have really loved his music to be in the Town Band for so long, I remember going on the Prom in the 60's and listening to the Band playing at the Bandstand. There used to be hundreds of people there all enjoying the music.
They were a great crowd at Maesdu and my father Norman Hughes always looked forward to going on the trips. Dad enjoyed his singing and would have loved those sing songs that they had up there in Scotland.
He's pictured here on the extreme left of the row your Dad's on and looking looking like he's had a few! Z**
-
Hugo I remember your dad very well, he was a great friend of my dads, he appears in several photos of our family barbecues! Lots of familiar faces in that photo too!
-
Looks like Peter White, 6th. from the left, back row.
-
The man on the extreme left, back row, is Rob Williams and the man third from the left, back row, is Tony Hobson.
-
The figure, centre, with hand over his head is George Brooks, on his left, John Edwards, next Bill ( Band ) Jones. They taught my son to play the Cornet and read Music in the Town Band. My son continued with Music after playing in the Band and is now a multi instrument musician and Music Teacher. He and I owe them a lot. George has recently retired from the Band. Well done lads and Thanks. $thanx$ and ££$
-
That's Henry Williams to the right of Tony Hobson and three further to the right is Don Williams. I knew most of them by name at one time but it's been so long since I was a member at Maesdu that I have forgotten some of their names.
:golf:
-
the man with the big moustache I only know as "Tash" and the second from the left on the front row is Bill Jones' brother "Tommy Tinks" the white haired man at the back is Jeff Eschle. He was the MC of the Willie Weiss Oompah Band who entertained at various beer festivals in the area in the 1980's. I've got a photo somewhere.
-
I think that the guy to Jeff Eschle's right is called Laurie and may have worked in the carpet business but I can't remember his surname.
The Willie Weiss Oompah Band was very popular in the 80's because Dad used to look forward to going to see them. He enjoyed the music and the atmosphere at these events as well as the excuse for a pint or two! Z**

That's not THE Willie Wise is it?
-
the man on the right with the accordion is Brian ashton, and i used to get a great laugh out of stopping him in the super market or car boot sale and asking him in a voice that everyone could hear ,are you still into the leather Brian?,a great lad and a stalwart of the British legion
-
Willie Weiss was fictional, but there was a Willie Wise who used to do the Summer Seasons with Alex Munroe at around the same time!
-
Yes I know I worked with him once in the box office of the pier. Whatever happened to him?
-
the man with the big moustache I only know as "Tash"
I think this may be Derek Roberts, a Past Captain of Maesdu Golf Club, and was married to Bessie Roberts who ran the Riding School and Stables at Glanwydden behind the Queen's Head.
-
I thought it was him too,im sure your right! I spent most of my weekends, rain or shine down at Bessies stables as a child-happy memories! Bessie was a wonderful lady:)
-
I think the tall guy is Charlie 'Chuck'
I think it is John Holmes
-
My quote was for the Laurel & Hardy impersonators not the Willie Weiss band photo.
-
Bessie was certainly a wonderful lady - my daughter spent many happy hours there - perhaps you knew her Haulfre? :)
-
Yes maybe...what is your daughters name? Pm me if you want :)
-
Done!

I am another with fond memories of Bessie Roberts who ran the riding school. I used to go there when she ran it from the famr that her parents rented from the Mostyn family. The famr was by Lady Forester's Convalescent Home at the back of Craig y Don.
It was a sad day when she had to relocate, the Mostyn Estate increased the rent on the farm and they had to leave there.
-
I remember Bessie running her riding from that farm near Gloddaeth Hall too!

I remember her stables from when they were in Craig Y Don, near to where the Craig Y Don Primary School is now. Then she had to move to Glanwydden.
A lovely, happy, and constantly smiling lady, always wanting the children to enjoy their horse riding. So much enthusiasm and a very hard worker. The horses I remember in her time in Craig y Don, Bingo, Dudley, Del, Rowan, she had a skewbald too cannot remember his name though atm??
-
Trooper?
-
Trooper?
I'm going back to the late 70's , think the name of the stables then was 'Conway Road Riding Stables'.
It wasn't Trooper, seem to remember it was more a cowboy name.
Edit: I remember now :D it was 'Gay Boy' A very 70's un pc name, and definitely not very pc circa 2011!!
There was a lady called Di who worked at the stables at that time, her parents ran The Rydal Nursing Home on Llandudno Road on the Penrhyn Bay/Rhos on Sea border.
-
I also remember Bessie when she was at the farm in Craig y Don. I used to have riding lessons from her when I was a child still in primary school, must have been around 1962/ 63. One of the horses at that time was called Sparky. I also had a few lessons up at Pinewood riding stables. In my early twenties I worked for a time at Benarth Hall in Conwy, and used to sometimes accompany Mrs Arkle, the then owner of Benarth when she took disabled children riding.
It was my friend Ruth who introduced me to riding at Bessies. She was a girl who lived and breathed horses. The craze at the time in the school playground was playing " Ivanhoe", and while most of us wanted to play at being the damsel in distress or a brave knight, Ruth always wanted to be the horse!
-
I was too young to remember Bessie's at Craig Y Don, and i didnt actually know that she originally had her stables there-very interesting! I remember the horses/ponies called= Sam (my favourite) and i rode him in Llandudno carnival one year, also Connie,Bistro,Kizzy,Rowan,Pepsi,Johnny Rep.

Oh, I remember those horses and Bessie and Di very well. I wonder if Di is still around? She used to ride a big grey called Willy! I remember all the names couple more, Jet, Bimbo and Truffles, oh and Lulu. Happy days :)

Here is a list of people past and present from conwy.I was given the list last week. I later found out it had been compiled by the conwy jackdaw society in 2002. They sat around a table and called out names.
-
Whats the point of it? Most of the names are nicknames.
You might as well print a list of Forum members nicknames on Oscar.

Tatws was the towns policeman in the 70's and 80's
Elwyn Taxis is the once owner of Elwyn's Taxis

Exactly 45 years ago to the day - does anyone remember 'It's a Knockout' from Eirias Parc 21st May 1967? Billy Simpson and a few of his cohorts from the Clock had to ahem, 'dismantle' a piano in less than 30 seconds to win the heat for Llandudno against Colwyn Bay. Which they did of course - with time to spare, and went on to the finals in Locarno Switzerland in July later that year. I am proud to say I witnessed this legendary event with my own eyes!.
Smashing a piano to pieces with a sledgehammer in 30 seconds was no trouble for Bill - he and most of the clientelle at the Clock could do the same thing to the pub's fixtures and fittings with their bare fists in half that time. Billy Simpson was a real character - well liked by all who knew him, and has the great honour of a bench inscribed to his memory in Haulfre Gardens - now THAT's fame....

This picture turned up in one of our old photo albums from August 1950. It is the Rhos-on-Sea Gala Queen and her entourage. Can anyone put names to any of the faces?
-
"Jack doggy doos shot" ;D
-
B2R .... have you taken leave of your senses??
-
"Jack doggy doos shot" ;D
"Ken Dodd's dad's dog's dead."
-
Is there a full moon? I cannot understand the significance of the post by b2r or the Major, can someone explain?
-
Born2run is quoting one of the names on the list of Conwy characters earlier in the thread.
-
Ah! Now I understand! The major doing similar I suppose? And there was me trying in some way to link them to a picture of the 1950 Rhos Gala Queen. What a silly chap I am! L0L L0L L0L

Evan Thomas is third from the left in the back row. I know the two on the right end of the top row too - the one second from the end was a smashing bloke but I can't bring his name to mind. The one in the white jumper is very familiar and I'm sure was well known in town.
Your right that's my uncle Evan my mum's brother, thought it was him. His sister, my Aunty Nell lived in Rudyard
-
Can anyone help with this photo? I have only just found it after having a clearout. I can't remember it being taken, I'm the one kneeling down, the hatless dude is Harry HASSIN (lived in Belle Vue Terrace, Great Orme) The lad at the back with the wooly hat is Peter EVANS (Black Gate, Great Orme) I can't for the life of me remember the names of the two in the front wearing hats nor, to my shame, can I remember the names of any of the girls so can anyone help. Also, who took the photo!!! $scratch$ ?{}?
-
For some reason the photo hasn't uploaded. I shall try again, also I'll post it on the photo gallery
-
Don't know if you are aware of it Ed but Harry Hassin passed away on the 8th January 2013 aged just 65. I've had a look at the photo but can't recognise anyone apart from you, Harry and Pete. You looked quite young there.
-
Hugo, I was not aware of that. I'm really sorry. I hadn't seen Harry for a number of years but we were very good mates in the 60's. Thank you for letting me know
-
Hugo, I haven't got a clue when this photo was taken, I must have been about 16 or so, that would have been about 175 years ago!!! I still can't upload the photo on this page so I'll leave it.
-
Is this the one Ed ?
-
THat's the one Hugo. I've been in touch with another old boy Richard EVANS, he had just joined the R.A.F. and Harry had sent him the photo (he must have sent me a copy) anyway he said the photo was taken in Elephants cave up the Happy Valley sometime in early 1963. Richard can only recognise Peter Evans, me and Harry. He thinks that two of the girls were sisters named JONES!! Have you any details on how Harry died and do you know where he is buried?
-
He could be right, I think Helen Jones is the on the far right and her sister Jackie may be the one 4th from the right. They lived on the Tre Creuddyn estate.
-
Hugo, thanks for that. That's put names to two of them, I remember now but for the life of me I can't put names to the others although I feel I should be able to. Age!!!
Harry's funeral is at Mochdre Crematorim on Wednesday 6th Feb. at 1.45. I'll leave home early, visit my Stepmother then go to the funeral.
Thanks again.
-
I remember going to a BBQ in Elephants cave and Jackie and Helen were there with their friends Dilys, Sheila and another red haired girl called Helen Jones. I'm not certain but one of the girls reminds me of Sheila Wood but I could be wrong.
-
Hugo, thanks for that, although still no bell ringing.
-
is that richie allen at the front
-
Had another look at the photo and I think it is Sheila Wood to the left of Peter Evans with Jackie on the right of him.
Is that Phil Griffiths extreme left?
-
November 1970. Francesca Annis, the 21 year old British actress, is pictured en route to Llandudno to play Lady Macbeth in an adaptation of the Shakespeare play:
These stars do tell "porkies" don't they?! - Francesca Annis was born on 14th May 1945 which would have made her 25 years old in 1970.
-
TonyF has sent me this photo from 1958 of a Jolly Boys Outing from the Labour Club to the Rudyard Hotel in Leeks, Staffs. Tony would like to know if anyone recognises any of the men in the photo?
