Some folk prefer Safari or Firefox but I still like and use Explorer.  Best thing to do is try them all and see which you prefer.  I have all three on my PC so can use whichever takes my fancy if one is acting up.

Having a bit of a frustrating time with my PC today, it keeps crashing and telling me that it needs to run start-up repairs which prove unsuccessful. One message then told me that BIOS was not compliant with ACPI (whatever that is) and I needed to contact my system vendor for a BIOS update. Another message told me to disconnect any device such as a camera or portable music player which had been attached. I had attached neither.

I managed to shut it down and thought I would sleep on it and see what happens in the morning. BUT then I thought of this thread and so would welcome comments and advice please.

Bellringer I had a quick look on the internet and these responses seem to suggest taking out the memory from the PC , giving a quick dust and putting it back in.

re: Why does it say my BIOS is not ACPI compliant?
Thanks for the help, i had also Bios not acpi compatable, so i removed ram and gave conections a wipe and brush off put back ram and every thing is fine, thanks again for ur help

re: Why does it say my BIOS is not ACPI compliant?
Having the same problem removed the RAM and cleaned the motherboard. RAM cleaned and working fine now.

re: Why does it say my BIOS is not ACPI compliant?
another guy with the problem, tried one ram stick at a time (after dusting) and it worked. It's definitely RAM related

But...if you do all that, S, be very careful.  RAM is notoriously sensitive to static, so before you start make sure you've earthed yourself.  Usually, touching the metal body of the computer while it's still plugged in will sort that.  Also, do not - under any circumstances - use your vacuum cleaner to give the innards a quick clean.  The movement of air across the components increases the likelihood of static discharge.  Use a feather duster instead.

Presumably your post on here was with your PC, so it is working to some degree.  The first thing I would try is a full update of your system via Microsoft update or the equivalent of your machine.   Then clear out all the rubbish by running System Mechanic if you have it or using the inbuilt program (microsoft) disc clean up and defragment.    If you can't get through them then have a look at the operating system help facility.   Microsoft explain a solution without removing any bits and pieces.

You could also try hoovering the insides - very carefully.

My eldest had a similar problem last week, he kept getting a message saying an error had occured with the RAM, it turned out to be a virus?

Just shows that the need for some good virus software is an absolute MUST!   ££$

My problem was diagnosed as the hard drive. New one now fitted and everything (well nearly everything) up and running, if only I could find some of it!

Had you maintained a back up of the old drive?  If not, then it might still be possible to salvage the contents of the old drive - at least partly.

Most if not all was retrieved from the old one thankfully. However backup was one of those things that I kept meaning to attend to and just did not get round to. I will be now as soon as possible.

Thanks all for your comments and help.

If you are going to back up regularly may I suggest you use a seperate hard drive.  This can easily be transfered from one computer to another and can even handle back ups from more than one PC.   I have a 400 Gb hard drive that just plugs in via one of the USB ports.
