Looks like it was taken by RAF Rescue helicopter to me Ian.

Almost certainly a helicopter of some sort, anyway.

I've seen it before, (and it would sell very well as a print methinks !!)

I am always amazed at how casual those construction workers are,  what would H&S say about all this?

If you ever read 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' by Robert Tressel, you will realise what their working conditions were like.

Read it?   How could I read it?   That would mean teaching me to read .... my IQ is too low, remember Mr Quiggs?

I wasn't being facetious Fester, just thought it an opportunity to point out what the Victorian workers had to endure to make a living.

Everything is relative to its time though Quiggs.

I mean, those who built The Grand, would count themselves incredibly lucky when compared to those who built,say, Conwy Castle.

Imagine having to WALK from Yorkshire in a February, to get to Wales by March ....(hoping your wife and kids might still be alive when (and if) you return home) .... hauling blocks of stone up ricketty scaffolding, all for fourpence a week.
Then having to walk all the way home in November without someone stealing your coins!

We have no idea, have we?   these days we face reduced pensions,  appraisals, and horror of horrors ...the coffee machine had no sugar in!

On the original it's possible to see the workers at the topmost level leaning casually against the spires and wearing ties, waistcoats and smoking pipes. The tradesmen always - it seems - wore ties and suits when working.

It's not a great quality copy, I'm afraid, it's actually a photo I took of a print from one of the photo folders at the Rest & Be Thankful. Would be great to see the original version.

I was talking to Fester today and he told me that you could still see the remains of the original wooden piles of the original 1858 Pier. So, we had a look over the side and, sure enough, we found two remnants of the original pier piles, little more than stumps of wood now. Impressive to think that they've lasted all this time though.
