St David's Hospice News....
« on: March 27, 2024, 02:41:32 pm »
A different venue, on a Friday night, for a worthy local cause we all know and appreciate, with same band and a rip-roaring atmosphere. Be there to sing along and be part of it. (There might even be room for dancing !)

Llandudno cafe where customers can enjoy delicious food while helping others

Julie Richards-Williams received a warm welcome at Caffi Dewi

Llandudnos Caffi Dewi is the pick of the day an ideal place to eat and drink delicious hot and cold food and drinks and at the same time support a charity that plays a vital role in the local community. Opened some 13 years ago and run entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers, this bright and airy cafe situated at St Davids Hospice on Abbey Road is an important money maker for the charity, with all profits ploughed back into providing high quality care for patients and their families across North Wales.

Just a short walk from West Shore beach, Caffi Dewi is open to the public and has become a popular pit stop for locals and visitors as well as relatives and friends of patients, offering breakfast, lunch, snacks, morning coffee and afternoon tea, including a tempting array of freshly baked cakes, scones, flapjacks and bara brith. The large private car park makes for easy off road parking.

St David's Hospice needs you - can you help?

St David’s Hospice is on the hunt for volunteers from all walks of life to help out at their café and reception desk based at their main site in Llandudno.

Facilities Manager for St David’s Hospice, Paul Wynne-Williams, said: “As we are approaching the summer months, we are seeing a lot more visitors using Café Dewi at our Llandudno site. We are asking for adult volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to consider donating some hours to help take orders and serve food and drinks.

“We have a lovely team of volunteers who can’t wait to welcome some new recruits. Volunteering has so many benefits, including the chance to build customer service skills, retail skills, teamwork, and self-confidence, as well as meeting new people and having fun. We would love to hear from anyone who would like to join the team.”

Last year St David’s Hospice volunteers saved the charity more than £650,000 in staffing costs thanks to donating 65,000 hours of their time – from serving patients their meals to marshalling at local marathons.

“We are also looking for volunteers who would like to be a part of the reception rota," he added. "This would involve helping visitors with their enquiries, processing merchandise and café sales as well as assisting with admin tasks.

“The café and reception are open Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm. Volunteering for St David’s Hospice is very flexible and we are very grateful to all who help us.”

Next month, the St David’s Hospice Sunflower Memories Meadow will take over Llandudno’s Happy Valley. This new appeal, launched as part of the hospice’s 25th year, is a beautiful way to honour the life of someone special in a place where many have special memories during summertime.

Rhian Jacobs from St David’s Hospice said: “Dedicating a sunflower in memory of your loved ones is not only a beautiful tribute to them but also helps fund hospice care for the people who need it now and in the next 25 years and more.

“The beautiful enamel sunflowers will be displayed throughout the day on Sunday 4th August at Happy Valley. People who have purchased can either take them with them after the event or we can arrange delivery after the event.”

A SUNFLOWER “Memories Meadow” will take over Llandudno’s Happy Valley this weekend.

This new appeal, launched by St David’s Hospice as part of its 25th year, is to honour the life of someone special in a place where many people may have memories of them.

Taking place on Sunday (August 4), the timings for the event are as follows:

10am - sunflowers on display (open to the public until 5pm)
6.30pm - ceremony with musical performances
7.30-8.30pm - the opportunity to collect purchased sunflowers from the meadow

Almost £15,000 has been raised for the project so far, while nearly 1,000 sunflowers are set to be on display.

Rhian Jacobs, from St David’s Hospice, said: “Dedicating a sunflower in memory of your loved ones is not only a beautiful tribute to them, but also helps fund hospice care for the people who need it now and in the next 25 years and more.

“The beautiful enamel sunflowers will be displayed throughout the day on August 4 at Happy Valley.

“People who have purchased can either take them with them after the event or we can arrange delivery after the event.”

This year, St David’s Hospice will need to generate almost £7million to keep services running.

Fundraising appeals are a major part of generating income to ensure the charity survives.

All profits from the Memories Meadow will go straight into patient care.

You can dedicate a sunflower at www.stdavidshospice.org.uk/memoriesmeadow, or you can call St David’s Hospice fundraising team on 01492 879058.

Sunflowers at Memories Meadow remember loved ones

St David’s Hospice recently held their Memories Meadow event at Llandudno’s Happy Valley gardens. Almost 1,000 sunflowers were displayed throughout the day, and each one was a tribute to someone special.

“Each sunflower represents a cherished memory, a life lived and a life shared. The sunflowers are not just symbols of remembrance, but also of the hope and support for the vital work we do at St David’s Hospice,” said senior social worker, Joanna Hughes.

MORE than 1,000 visitors came out to support a North Wales hospice’s summer fair, which resulted in more than £10,000 being raised.

St David’s Hospice, which this year celebrates 25 years of providing care to residents across North West Wales, held its fair in July to help raise vital funds to ensure care can continue.

Adrian Owen, fundraising manager for St David’s Hospice, said “We had a great day full of entertainment, brilliant stalls and games plus food and drink.

“Without our amazing volunteers, these events would not be possible, so a big thank you to the 50-plus volunteers that helped make this such a successful event.

“We are so grateful to all who attended and to the stall holders – without their support, we would not have reached the amazing sum of £10,913, which is enough to fund four months’ worth of medical supplies for our charity.”

The event featured many crafters from across the region, with fundraising games and charity stalls as well as plenty of refreshments for visitors to enjoy.

Special guests included the mayor and mayoress of Llandudno, who opened the day with the town’s Miss Alice, along with a range of entertainers.

St David’s Hospice will be holding its Christmas fair at Venue Cymru, Llandudno on November 30.

Anybody who is interested in booking a stall can email adrian.owen@stdavidshospice.org.uk or call 01492 879058.

St David's Hospice Tree of Lights ceremonies set to return this autumn
The ceremony is one of four special events taking place where communities are invited to remember their loved ones

A north Wales Hospice charity will be inviting communities to remember their loved ones through several remembrance services over the coming months.

St David’s Hospice, which offers palliative and end of life care to residents in Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey will be working alongside several community organisations to host the annual Tree of Lights ceremonies.

Rhos on Sea Rotary Club have been supporting St David’s Hospice for over twenty years, most notably by partnering with the charity by raising funds through the annual lighting up of the ‘Rotary Tree’ on the Cayley promenade embankment.

Rhian Jacobs, events and campaigns manager for St David’s said:

“We are honoured that Rhos-on-Sea Rotary Club have chosen St David’s Hospice as their Tree of Lights charity partner each year since 1999.

“The Tree of Lights ceremony is very special to so many people in our communities and we are very grateful to our friends at the Rotary Club for their support - particularly in this our 25th year of care.”
